If anyone had ever pm'd my duplicate account looking for anything but some idle chat, I would've told them who I was. The whole point back in 2002 was to see just how long it took to be found out. I've always shown kindness and been here for people, no matter who I was.

You cannot  know, unless you interact with someone over a very long period of time, and even then you could be unfortunate enough to find a professional deceiver. Do not open yourselves up to people that are names on a board until you have known them long enough to feel some degree of certainty. Use your common sense: for instance if someone on the board sends you a photo of themselves it could be a fake. If they send you 100 photos over a period of a couple years including childhood pics, baby pics, pics of their family, dog etc. then they are probably real... If you want to know someone better, ask if you may phone them - you can often get a much better feel for someone after hearing their voice. But remember, you can never be certain about anyone - not on a message board, not on the phone - not even in person. That sweet guy or gal you dated last night might just be a psycho killer...

I've been on this board for over 3 years and have gotten to know a lot of people in that time, and have watched people I thought I knew turn jeckle and hyde on me. I trust exactly five persons on this board and that's as far as it goes...

The technique I have found is to find a mundane thing to think about and actively make yourself concentrate on it and not let it wander off.  In particular I either count or do the alphabet in my head.  Really concentrating on it, picturing each separate letter/number in a different colour as it moves towards me.  Some people find saying the same word over and over (something like "the") has the same effect.
