Subject: Real Life Meeting?
Written By: ADH13 on 08/20/05 at 5:08 pm
I was thinking maybe a couple years down the road it would be fun to plan some sort of event in real life... like maybe in NY or Las Vegas... for those of us who are still around the boards...
i was just curious how many of you guys would actually consider packing your suitcases, taking time off of work and travelling in order to meet the people we talk to so many hours a day online? ???
If it was gonna be a weekend in vegas or something, i probably would... but i wouldn't travel too far just for a dinner or something that was only gonna be a couple hours

I've been pondering something like that for a while... 8)
But I'd have to figure out my travel arrangements...and figure out when I'd have time in my busy schedule :-\\

Well, I am going to do just that in September with members of another board so I would be more than willing.  Like you said, though, it has to be for more than just a couple of hours otherwise it isn't worth the travel expense.  Unless SLC, UT is the meeting place. ;)

You'd have it pretty easy if it was in Vegas, Jeff.. I think you're one of the closest members to Las Vegas... it'd be a 10-12 hour drive for me.. since i dont like to fly.

Well, I've never been to Vegas before (or anywhere in the state of Nevada for that matter). I could figure out how to get there pretty easily, since I'm good at navigating.

Sounds like a fun idea - especially for, say the Summer or Christmas break when people tend to be less busy.
Ironically I've been going on the Internet and message boards for 7 years and I've yet to actually ever meet any of my online friends (I've pledged to some of them that I'll try and change that before 2010 though!). ;)
The only problem is geographical locations -- we've got people all over the USA and even the world, so of course not everyone would be able to show up. Then there's people like me who don't have a car (AND I'm broke, LOL!), so it would be harder for me to up and take a trip halfway across the country, for instance.
PS: I tell ya, we need not only a time machine, but a warping device like in Star Trek - it would make travelling alot easier! ;D

I would consider it. If it's in Las Vegas that would sure be nifty! Let's just not go to Vegas between May-August, we'll feel like we're melting in the 120+ heat. I've been to Las Vegas twice (driven and flown), so I know the city fairly well. It's probably about a 9 hour drive to Vegas for me.

Hehe, good point!
I was also thinking, maybe a smaller series of more localized get-togethers would be cool and also easier to do? Say something in California (that's where I'm from so I had to mention it!) then something for people on the east coast, etc.
Plus, I think a series of shorter meetings would be cooler than just one big one.

That's a good Point, Marty. You and I are only like 40 minutes away!! Crazy! Sometimes it feels like when we're all talking on this message board as if we're all in the same place and not different countries/coasts, when in actuality some of us are really close to one another!

I would actually prefer one big one... I doubt it would ever happen anyway, I was just thinking hypothetically... cause I think it would be awesome if it ever did... :) I'm actually surprised to see this many positive responses... I figured most people wouldn't want to go through the hassle...

That is actually sounding like a lot of fun... We'd be like Romy & Michelle, but with a guy from Back to the Future ... lol One heck of a road trip..
Or we'd be like Thelma & Louise, without the lawlessness and have Marty Mcfly be our Brad Pitt (without hurting him, lol)
Okay, I think I'm laughing too much thinking about it.. but that would be SOO fun!

As fan as it would be, I have only four problems....
1) Getting time off work at a short notice would be bad.
2) I have a trip to Thunder Bay for booked all ready, so I pretty much used my vacation time this year.
3) Las Vegas is a bit far off for me.
4) Airplanes tickets are not very cheap, ditto hotel rooms.

1. I'm in college, and my semester's about to start. We'd have to do this during a time that I'm off.

3. Like Jamie McBain said, airplane tickets aren't cheap.

The reason I suggest next year at the earliest is that i have my Fall semester coming up (in fact, it starts next week!), and I feel it's very important that I attend my classes...and my semester will be done the middle of December. After that I gotta do my holiday shopping and stuff... things generally get crazy for everyone around that time anyway. Which leaves 2006 at the earliest. :-\\

That will be too early for a lot of people Jeff, lol. It would take saving money, getting things organised, getting time off work and the like - it may take longer than 2006 if organised now. :)

Don't worry dude, I'm almost 24 and I still consult mine - they're easygoing but I still tend to tell them where I'm going and all.
I might not be "specific" specific until I get back, though (not to worry 'cause I'm a pretty good boy)! ;D
Usually if I just say I'm "going out" and when-abouts I'll be back, it's fine with them. They've never been the type to probe and stuff.
PS: Howard, if ever you do make it to a gathering (if we have one) I think you'd be a pretty cool guy to hang around with. As would Andrea, Mark, Ultraviolet, Bobby and pretty much everyone that's already posted here. :)

Yeah that would be cool... only problem is I don't know how many people would be able to commit now to something so far out... All I ask is it has to be someplace where we can have fun even if there's not a big turnout.. that's why i was thinking vegas.. that way if nobody shows up but me, i can still plant myself at a roulette table, order me a drink and have a good time.

'Oh...'
;D
I did the same thing with my parents before I went to Romania, I told them a month before, mom said we are always the last ones to know your plans, I was thinking, hmmm I can tell her 6 months early and hear her nag for 6 months or I can tell her one month early and hear her nag for only one month  ::)

haha I was thinking it would be a good time because people are usually out of school/college. Maybe January '07?
That sounds like a better time to me too. :)
I'm not exactly rich right now (but that could change in a year - I hope it does, LOL!) yet I think the second half of 2006 or early 2007 is cool. Vegas isn't too far away from here either, yet considering the people who might come from across the country or the world, that sounds about perfect.

In the eys of the US Government.. i don't think i am. When i studied my Financial Aid documents.. it turns out i answer to nobody.
However.. I am petitioning the Judge to actually allow my Uncle Custody over me so i can go on his health insurance.
Going back a step ;D
Wouldn't worry about it, English Drivers License and strong accent = Chips ;D
I think you'd be better having you Uncle have custody, the insurance is a big thing. If you are an emancipated juvenile you do not have all the rights of an adult, i.e. voting, drinking, casinos. It just means your parents are no longer legally responsible for you.

I would be willing to help in the planning, as my dollar bills almost always face the same direction ( ;D), although I don't want to take on the whole thing by myself.....maybe we can form a sort of committee?? How does that sound?
Erin :)

Same here. She nagged, and bitched, and cried and pouted the whole of the time i was there before i left. So i just went out in the morning and didn't come back until after she'd gone to bed ;D

That sounds good... maybe we can help co-ordinate the people who live in our own areas to work out carpools, flights, etc. But the first thing we need to figure out is when and where. My vote is for Vegas as a location... i really don't care when though.. i'm pretty flexible.
I really like New York New York Hotel Casino for shows, their bars (they have the Coyote Ugly bar) and they have a bar with dueling pianos that play lots of 70's & 80's stuff with the whole crowd singing along.

Stratosphere is cool too, it is known for its crazy thrill rides... not too sure about the shows, but they have a cool "revolving restaurant" up on top of the tower and you can see the whole city lit up.

And if people are planning to bring their children, we might want to consider Circus Circus.. definitely the most "kid friendly".
