Subject: Censored words... maybe I should lift a few of them?

Written By: ChuckyG on 08/26/05 at 8:42 am

The thought process behind the censor word list is this:

Web filtering companies look at the site from time to time, if they see an abnormal amount of curse words, they'll add the site to a block filter and prevent people from visiting while at work, at school, etc.

While people think we should all be adults here, they're unaware of the reason I set up the boards in the first place.  It was so that if school kids had a question about the 80s when working on their homework, they could visit the messageboard and get help.  Sometimes they just want you to do their homework for you, but usually the questions are sincere.

However, the filter might be a little too aggressive.

So here is the list.  I numbered it so we don't have to deal with the current filter when talking about stuff.

heck, maybe we should try and make the list ordered, and just refer to the numbers (good idea for use around kids, you number 3's)

http://drse.us/banned.html

some are humrous, some are from the april 1st joke

#1 (and it's varients) is not coming off the list

#6, #9, #13, #12, etc.  these probably aren't in need of filtering.  I'm amazed there are even this many words in there, I don't remember adding half of them.

Well, us Brits could always use 'arse' for #6. and its variants...!

Same goes for 'sh!t', we could use 'sheeshe' - thoughts on this, anyone?

'Dam_ned' and it's variants can certainly go, IMO...

I think those are good.....funny, though, I notice Dick>Dip isn't on the list....was that one removed?

Also, what's goat$e?  I've never heard that one???

Dick is a man's name, even if it can be used as an insult. It should have never been there.

the goat one.  trust me you don't want to know.  it's an offensive website people trick others into viewiing.  I used to hang out on a site where people passed that one around all the time.  Someone posted it here once, and that was enough for me to add the name to the filter to try and prevent a repeat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Shock_sites has a link to a very thorough page about that one.

Yes that become high school network wallpaper for some time.

I can agree with most, but damn, ass, dumbass etc? These are words we hear on network TV all the time, i dare say the time has come where we can talk about our asses non stop.

Is it okay to leave the the one?  That's one of my most frequent typos ;D

What about p iss?  If the -ed & -es versions are going to be off, is there a reason why that is still on?

yeah, the the the one is part of the April fool's joke, and has to remain, or it'll screw up posts from then as a result

p iss should be coming back too...  I can't understand why I ever put some of these in there in the first place.

I think the B-variants should stay - it's just too easy for stuff to get out of hand. Maybe the pri* words as well.

I kinda like the dam*-word filters as well. Makes the place sound kinda... genteel in a hick sort of way :D

Sure, cut out every filter you want! I never liked when the word is changed.. it just sounds so.. fake. I personally prefer things like "b----", "b*tch" or "bit-OOP!" rather then turning it to another word. Meh.

So essentially, i could say, Wow the waitress i had at lunch today was a real Bitch!

However, if for instance, and obviously this is just an example, if i was to say Member X is a total Bitch then it would be frowned upon.

Just a couple of thoughts....

If my surname was Ashcroft, I would be mightily pinged off at # 3  ;D

The other thing about # 3 that makes me laugh is that as an Aussie, the pronunciation (and spelling) here is arsehole, and is used with much more venom.  The American spelling of it makes me sort of chuckle when I hear it used because in comparison it seems so 'gentle'  :D :D :D :D

I guess it is just a matter of perspective.  My ultimate point being that if I wanted to use the Aussie variant (which I don't except for the above purpose of illustration) ... I always could !  :o

I am glad you intend to get rid of the restriction on Damn and it's variants, I have always struggled to understand it being there in the first place.

Damn filter  >:(    ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

In some cases, Rob, it's already like that on the boards - just covered in asterisks and the censored substitutes, that's all.

It goes back to April Fools Day... he made it so if anyone  said Chuck or ChuckyG it would come out "$chmuck or $chmuckyG"    then after april fools day was over he censored it backwards so that the posts would read correctly again :D

that is why we can't say t-e-h also.  it will automatically change to "the"

This would have been an interesting concept for folks who really felt they had to use the words, eg.

On the other hand would the numbers become censored since they referred to the prohibited words :D

Well, it can be used in context. Observe.

However, there's no way to stop these sort:

"I'll see you in Hell, Howard!"

without also banning:

"What about the concept of Hell in Christianity?"

Overall I agree. I think any word that, when written is strictly a cuss word, should stay filtered (eg: "Ashcroft", F---) but double meaning ones shouldn't be. If someone uses it in a derogetory way, then edit that particular post maybe.

On an off note, I found it hilarious (albeit confusing) when "a-ss" was censored to "wazoo". I was referring to a style of rock music prevalent in the 70's and it came out "clwazooic rock". ;D
