Subject: Do/Did you like many songs the first time you hear/heard them?

Written By: ADH13 on 09/09/05 at 1:33 am

I was just curious if I'm the only one... I will almost never really like a song the first time I hear it.  Songs usually have to grow on me, either by hearing them enough times on the radio or a jukebox, or from being around someone who listens to them alot.

Most songs usually grab me straight away, others take a few listens (Especially the likes of Pink Floyd for example)

yeah,i'm the same as you,Luke..especially if they've 'got a good beat' and are 'easy to dance to'  :D'

seriously, though,i usually can tell at first listen whether or not a song appeals to me in a major way  :)

I wish I could do that.  Sometimes I want to download stuff.. like that New Orleans song you told me about, GRS... but I know I will have to listen to it a bunch of times before I can really decide if I like it.

There have been exceptions though.  The few times I liked a song the first time I heard it, it usually turned out to be one of my all time favorites.

For me, it was the 1983 song Subdivisions by RUSH.  I just can't stand RUSH, but I figured they are Canadian, I am Canadian, they must have 1 song I like, and thanks to K-Tel's Rock '83 LP, Subdivisons kind of grew on me :)

I listened to it so much, I kind of still like it.  Rush - great one hit wonders  ;D

I know I pm'd this to you but I had to put it up here too Jason!!

Rush has produced 29 albums in 30 years. . .
Not all of them famous however more than just one song went into the top 10!

Fly By Night
Closer To The Heart
Tom Sawyer
Subdivisions
New World Man
Nobody's Hero
The Temples Of Syrinx
2112 Overture
Marathon

Definitely not a One Hit Wonder! ;) ;D

In general, sure RUSH had alot of hits.  I know what they all sound like, but since I only liked Subvisions, my mind blocks out all the other ones LOL :)

Slow songs definitely take time for me to like, alternative rock too.

Usually, I won't like a song, but I'll listen again later, and I love it. "Robert Dye" by Momus and everything by Neutral Milk Hotel became some of my favorites this way.

There are some songs that grab me the very first time I heard it, others it takes a while to grow on me.

I have the perfect example for you..

When i was about 7.. My uncle came over to England and as always bought lots of CD's with him.
Now, my parents have.. no, i wont lie, they have sheesh taste in music. So, it was always nice to hear something new.

He happened to have a little CD with him called 'Nevermind' i think we all know who recorded it.

Anyway, first track, i was hooked.

Same with the Black Album, it was the first i heard, in fact i believe it was Enter Sandman at a fairly young age, and that was it.. it was like.. WOOOAH!

It all depends. Most of the time songs grow on me, though.

It takes me a while before the songs I listen to get used to me.
