I have known how to use chopsticks since 6th grade.

There was a kid in my class whose parents owned a Chinese Restaurant... he brought chopsticks all the time and inquiring as I was... I just had to learn. I am in the process of teaching my son now and he is getting it faster than I ever did! :D

Some of the most important chopstick rules are:

Hold your chopsticks towards their end, and not in the middle or the front third.

When you are not using your chopsticks and when you are finished eating, lay them down in front of you with the tip to left.

Do not stick chopsticks into your food, especially not into rice. Only at funerals are chopsticks stuck into the rice that is put onto the altar.

Do not pass food with your chopsticks directly to somebody else's chopsticks. Only at funerals are the bones of the cremated body given in that way from person to person.

Do not spear food with your chopsticks.

Do not point with your chopsticks to something or somebody.

Do not move your chopsticks around in the air too much, nor play with them.

Do not move around plates or bowls with chopsticks.

To separate a piece of food into two pieces, exert controlled pressure on the chopsticks while moving them apart from each other. This needs much exercise.

If you have already used your chopsticks, use the opposite end of your chopsticks in order to move food from a shared plate to your own plate.

Yup. I have no idea where I picked it up (maybe I was Chinese in a former life). I was once in a Chinese resteraunt using them and the waitress (who was from China) asked me if I was ever in Asia. When I said no, she couldn't believe it because she said that I used them like someone who had lived there and had a  lot of experiece with them. What a complement.

Well, I tried to make a Swiss Roll once, by throwing him down an Alp...!

Actually, thinking about it, it might have been a spring roll that turned my stomach...it's the one that looks like it's been stuffed with worms - someone may be able to clarify (and good luck to you if you do...!!)

Yes, that does sound like a spring roll or egg roll (one is fried, the other is not)...

They usually contain ground pork, grated carrots, bean sprouts (which is probably what you thought looked like worms), and other vegetables...and to be honest, I think they're quite yummy!  :D

I can eat things that are simple to pick up with chopsticks.  Like salad or small pieces of meat.  I can't eat rice or noodles though because they always fall off.

Andrea, with the noodles, hold the noodle in the middle with the chopsticks,  pick it up off the plate to the point where only the bottom of the noodle is touching the plate, then, still clutching it with your chopsticks, just simply fold it over to the side and use the chopsticks to grab the other end. Now, the noodle should be easier to eat it without it falling off. :)

As for rice, hold your your chopsticks about half an inch apart, and holding them sideways, scoop them into the rice from the side and as you scoop the rice up, bring the chopsticks together.

There are techniques, see? ;)

I have a friend whose parents are right off of the boat from Canton and she showed me how to eat with
chopsticks.  She said the reason Asians use chopsticks is because once food is prepared it is considered
that if was to be pierced again the flavor would be altered.  That is why the food is prepared ready to eat in bite size pieces.  I would also add that if you want to eat real Chinese food it is better not to go where you see lots of non-Asians.  I worked near Chinatown and went in to eat where the Asians eat and the food was much better.  I also ate at my friends house and the food cooked at home was the kind that for weeks after you were hoping to go back again soon.  Whenever she says come over I change all plans because I know I am in for a treat.  Oh yeah, and an object of amusement is to watch someone try to eat rice with chopsticks.  Those little ceramic spoons are made for the rice, and it is proper etiquette to bring the bowl up to your chin to keep the rice from sprinkling down your shirt.

Eating rice with chopsticks is very easy to me. You say they actually use a ceramic spoon? Rather than chopsticks(for the rice)? Hmm, perhaps it is a region thing. Because I learned how to eat rice with chopsticks back in high school from a Chinese friend.
