Subject: What does your voice sound like? - Mark II

Written By: Bobby on 09/21/05 at 7:24 am

Okay, folks. I've fixed the temporary file lapse.  :D

Grab your microphones and let's see if we can permanently keep your voice on the messageboard forever . . .  8)

1. We had a problem with time limitations with the old system (only allowed 1 min). Download 'wavepad' to allow yourself more than a minute of voice time. It works in the same way as the sound recorder does.

http://www.download.com/WavePad/3000-2170_4-10382895.html?tag=lst-0-1

2. Click the link below for 'file lodge'.  :)

http://www.filelodge.com/

-  Register first, it's free and you will get your activation e-mail.

-  Click on 'Main folder' to upload

-  Make sure 'Main Folder (default)' is set in upload options to the left

-  Under 'Select file' section, browse for the file you want.

-  Click 'upload file' underneath.

-  You see the 'Tags' screen come up - just press 'OK'.

-  Where you see the link to your file in the folder, just 'copy shortcut' and paste it unto your post/

3. Log out of 'file lodge'.

Here is my message:

I'm looking forward to hearing all of your permanent voices on the boards now!  :D

It's official! If I can get 50 voices in this thread, I will sing 'You can call me Al' by Paul Simon. There! Get your voice on here!  8)

I would love to post my voice (which tends to crack), but I don't have a microphone.

I listened to your file though.  Funny, I was expecting you to sound like a big tough wrestler guy.   ;)

Yeah, the first time I set this up we had certain limitations - Mark II should be a lot more cooler.  8)

Andrea and I have discussed that she may incorporate the voice messages in with the pictures on the gallery thread for a full profile of everybody.  8)

Well done for being the first, Erin. What a great voice!  8) :D

I hope you get over your cold pretty sharpish.  ;)

It will be a doddle once we get loads of people's voices on. It's just a matter of copy/pasting the link onto each profile.  8)

Well I think a lot of people will be timid to record themselves singing...

I'd go for the idea, I'm just not really good at setting up the microphone, etc.  Also, I need to have the house to myself to do this, and that rarely happens (unfortunately)... :-\\

If people can go out and sing Kareoke, I reckon they can stay in and sing too. I urge them to drink a lot of alchohol beforehand, lol - maybe it could be an extension of the 'Happy Hour' thread on boardgames?  :)

Your mp3 may be low quality because you may not have picked 'CD quality' when it comes to 'select WAV. file format' once you have recorded (where it says 'name' and 'untitled' beneath it).

Ah, nobody wants to hear me just talk  ;D

I used another program to make the mp3 cause I thought i could make it in a wma file, but that file site doesn't like wma files, so i compressed the mp3 in size cause it was a large file size  :o

what type of file is it?  I found that windows media audio (wma) files won't work, just mp3's pretty much will work :)

Really, I didn't think there was a problem with the different files?  ???

Okay, that can be solved easily. Download 'Cheetah Converter' the best free sound file converter around IMO. It can turn your WAV.file into an mp3 file.  :)

http://www.download.com/Cheetah-Audio-Converter/3000-2140_4-10418415.html?tag=lst-0-1

Simply drag your file in, select your specifications above (bit rate etc) and then simply 'convert' using the green arrow button.

I found it odd that filelodge accepts WMV files, but not WMA files.  I prefer WMA's over mp3's cause with mp3's you have to download them or open them.  WMA's play right away as you click on them :)

The instructions are on the first page, Howard. Download 'Wavepad' and 'File lodge' to start with. You need to register file lodge and you will get an activation e-mail to log on to it. Once done, record your voice on wavepad using your microphone and upload it to your main folder in file lodge where you copy and paste the link to your post here.

You reckon you can do it, Howard?  :)

It's Paul McCartney, John's is a little more.. nasally? I dunno.

Well, the site that Bobby gave is down tonight, So I had to use this. There are 2 recordings. One is just me, and the other is both me and Erin (Just so you know we're 2 different people) Enjoy!

Nice, Beth.  When I clicked on the link, it just opened up MusicMatch and did nothing, so I eventually had to save it in order to play it.  I hope that's not too creepy...  ;)

As I discover that the infamous Andrew Snyder decides to post his voice in the great forum called "Inthe00s", I anxiously anticipate the sound of his voice. I wonder "what does this mysterious, yet totally cool guy on the other side of the nation sound like?" I wonder... And as I open it, I listen and I am very surprised.

Your ... File name and speech is about me.

I am flattered

The very weird thing is... I first pictured you to sound like someone I know ..

then after Beth's description, I figured you sounded like.. well... different

now that I listen... You sound like the someone I know.

Wait, Beth described my voice? How does one "describe" my voice?

I didn't think words could adequately describe the Godly, masculine, deep, intimidating, awesome, sonorous, clear tone of my voice.  ;D

Hmm.. everybody who meets me says that I look and sound exactly like somebody they know... usually, it tends to be this random college guy who works at every church on earth.

You will find 'Yousendit' only keeps files on their server for 7 days, which was why I was looking for an alternative way of doing that. There is an alternative when I can be bothered to look and set up Mark III.  ;D

EVery inch of NYC has a different accent. I can tell when someone is from Long Island. I am more of a Jersey sounding person...one that lives near Brooklyn.  Even here, on this island, the accent changes from town to town. I know who is from Tottenville (me!) and who is from Rosebank.

No, "The Movies" is a game, kinda like "Sim Theme Park" or "Sim Tycoon", except you make and manage a movie studio.

Part of the attraction to people like me is that you can make your own movies.  There are dozens of sets, and hundreds of different actions you can have your "Sim Actors" make.  Then once the movie is made, you can edit them, and add either subtitles or voice overs.

I choose to go the narration route.  One of my movies is a spoof on the "film noir" style, with a detective doing a commentary on a case.  The other is more serious, a remake of an old Vincent Price movie.  It is shot in B&W, and has a narration as well.

Since I work by myself on these, I stick to stories where I can do a single person narration.  It helps me in the editing if I do not have to worry about working with voice actors that I do not know.

No, 'fraid not. If you can get a recording of Dafydd (the only gay in the village of Llandewi Brefi) from Brit comedy Little Britain, it's a bit like that, but not quite so camp or exaggeratedly Welsh...I wouldn't mind, but I'm not actually gay & only half Welsh; perhaps having recently moved near to Llandewi Brefi is having an effect on me!

My voice sounds different on a tape/video recording than how it sounds when I talk to someone in public

That is quite normal.  And it is a combination of several things.

My normal talking is rather distinct rhythem, because of many years of speech therapy.  I have always had a bad stutter, and when I get excited or agrivated, it comes back in spades.  Even my normal talking, I would stutter however.

When I went through therapy in the early 1970's, I had a coach that had a unique way of fixing stutters.  He had us slow down our talking, and if we sensed we were about to stutter, to stop and pause.  My speaking sounds rather slow most times, because of the frequent pauses.  But it is such a part of how I talk, that people hardly ever notice it, or even realise that I stutter.  Most of the time it is because my mind is moving faster then my mouth can.  Then I come to a word that I simply can't get out.  Pausing normally lets me catch up with myself, and get the word out.

Other times, I get stuck on a word.  By pausing, it lets me come up with a new word, and continue the conversation (for example, I may not be able to come up with "trapped", so after the pause I replace it with "stuck").

And when I speak in public, it is something very different.  When I set myself into "spiel mode", I can actually talk quite quickly and at length.  But this is basically a series of pre-prepared scripts that I run in my head, and require no thought at all.

If anybody wants to hear my voice, here is a link to 2 of the movies I made.  I did the narration on both of them.

No, I was using my false vocal cords. They are the vocal folds that protect the fairly delicate true vocal cords. If you scream or growl these are what you use, I believe if you sing Falsetto like Rob Halford or some such individual you use them as well.
If my science is right they are more developed on men in general, this is why men can sing at a normal range but also go much higher and much lower whereas women are generally (some exceptions i.e Angela Goscow) limited to the range their true vocal cords can supply.

I used Babelfish so I hope this works.

Usted necesita un micrófono, separado o en un webcam. Chasque el comienzo, chasque todos los programas, chasque los accesorios y después chasque el registrador sano.
