Subject: What bands?

Written By: Dominic L. on 09/29/05 at 8:32 pm

What bands can you recognize by just hearing the intro at the beginning of a song?

I can tell R.E.M. and Tom Petty songs from the beginning before they start singing because of their unique styles. Even if I never heard the song before.

The Shins have a very distinctive sound to me.

Mice Parade has such a unique sound. Sometimes Elliott Smith, too.

However, that Meredith Bragg And The Terminals song sounded JUST like an Elliott Smith song, the first time I heard it. It threw me off.

Never heard Mice Parade, but...
I fell in love with you today...

..They call you Mice Parade.

I'm not sure what that means....

Elliott Smith does have a distinctive sound

Oh, yes..that's currently on my away message. I actually fell in love with them a couple of weeks ago, but....
It's a shame because you can't really find anything on them, and bearshare could only find like 6 of their songs. They have 5 or 6 CD's, too.
They're very unique.

If you want to. Not sure if you would like them, or not. They're kinda...folk/jazz...it's odd, but I love it. If you want me to send you a song, you know where to find me.

Momus songs, especially on the newer albums, you can identify within a second. Les Claypool also has a very concrete intro style. R.E.M., you really can tell.. very easy to spot in an intro.

Any Zeppelin or Tool song.

I totally agree with AC/DC and Tom Petty. I'll also throw in ZZ Top and Bad Company.

Maybe that's just 'cause I'm a big fan of all those bands (Petty in particular), so I have a tendency to recognize their songs a little easier than average. But I do think they all have a generally similar formula.

For a slightly lesser known band (comparitively), I'll say Survivor kinda has a trademark sound too. Same with 80's Chicago.

Old Time Relijun.

Like, if you hear a song, and the guy singing sounds just like LUCIFER HIMSELF! ...Then it's probably Old Time Relijun

She's telling the truth. Take a down-South guy, hit him in the hand with a hammer, force-feed him mushrooms and Jack Daniels through a funnel, show him this picture:

And see what happens. And his voice IS very demonic.

Also, if the instruments are grossly out-of-tune, and the drummer is layin' down a phat beat.. then it's also Old Time Relijun.
