Subject: songs sung in elementry school and music festival

What songs do you remember having to sing at school?

The earliest one that i remember is

"Let's go fly a kite"

Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let's go fly a kite
And send it soaring

Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite
Let's go fly a kite!

that was all the way back in grade 1, for some reason it has stuck in my mind.

"This is the song that never ends
Yes it goes on and on my friends
Some people started singing it
Not knowing what it was

And they'll continue singing it forever
just because ..."

I remember singing alot of folksongs and some comedy folksongs.

Two I kinda remember were:

Down in the valley
The Valley so low
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow
Hear the wind blow, dear, hear the wind blow
Hang your head over, hear the wind blow.

Roses love sunshine, violets love dew
Angels in heaven know I love you
Know I love you, dear, know I love you
Angels in heaven, know I love you.

------------------

And some song based on the Pied Piper story:

(We sang this as the "villagers" - I was the "baker")

rats oh oh we've got rats
they're driving us bats
oh oh rats

(Baker)
Rats came in my pastry shop
eat my pies and rolls
First the doughnuts they devour
now they're eating holes.

----------------------

Now why would I remember this 30 odd years later, I have no idea.

"Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown,
Oh what you gonna do when the rain comes down
Oh what ya gonna do and what ya gonna say
If you can't pay the rent 'till the rain goes away

C- thats the way it begins
H- is the next letter in
I- you're in the middle of the word
C- you've already heard
K- now you're roundin' the bend
E- you're nearin' the end
C-H-I-C-K-E-N
That's the way you spell CHICKEN!"

I remember in middle school we had a cool music teacher that would let us sing "rock" songs, even though they were 70s rock songs that we really hadn't heard, hey it sure beat singing silly folksongs.

Some I remember singing:

American Bandstand theme

and Eagles songs:
The Best of My Love
Already Gone

and once we sang
Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band
but we had to change the lyrics "Black panties with an angel's face" to "Black candies with an angel's face" because a parent protested.  ;D

When I was in Grade 5, my teacher would often bring out his guitar and sing us folk songs.  It was pure torture  ;D

When I was younger, I went to summer day camp, and the kids used to chant this, especially while in the swimming pool; like an elimination game. Whoever was pointed to upon the word "Plop" was out of the game. Except I think the last line was "Jumps off the lily with an oomp-KERPLOP!!" :D

We sang all the patriotic songs.. God Bless America, My Country Tis Of Thee, Yankee Doodle, etc...

Plus we sang Tie A Yellow Ribbon in 3rd grade when the iran hostage thing was happening.

In kindergarten I can remember singing this song:

Bluebird, bluebird, through my window
Bluebird, bluebird, through my window
Bluebird, bluebird, through my window,
Oh, Johnny, I am tired.
Take a little girl and tap her on the shoulder,
Take a little girl and tap her on the shoulder
Take a little girl and tap her on the shoulder,
Oh Johnny I am tired.
;D

I guess back then I never realized it made no sense. :-[

The theme to "The Greatest AMERICAN Hero" .. "Believe it or not"?  and I hated the show, but the song wasn't so bad.
Heart light--Neil diamond for the E.T. movie.
  "high hopes"
Feliz Navidad--Jose Feliciano  Sung during the Christmas program when you could still call it that w/out offending half the student population.
we had singing once a week for 5 years! I know there were more.

I remember in 1st grade, the class got up on the stage (I can't remember what the occation was for) and we sang a French song about a bird who kept losing her feathers. "Tois plume, duex plume, un plume, plume, plume. Il a chant a plume, ma mere, Il a chant a plume".  (Don't know if I got the lyrics right or not-but that is how I remember it. If anyone knows this song, I would be grateful if you could give me the exact lyrics.)

I don't think I know that song... unless it's "Alouette".  I don't remember all the lyrics to it but it has something to do with plucking feathers from a bird.

In the words of Gerald Ford...
"It could go on, and on and on,
or someone must write the end to it."

Since I went to a Christian school during my early years, I had to sing lots of Christian songs.

"Kumbaya" (I think that's how it's spelled)
"This Little Light of Mine"

Those are the ones that stand out most.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again  ::)

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout

And we'll all feel gay,
When Johnny comes marching home.

LOL  That was smart to rewrite that line.  I remember snickering at that line when we had to sing it. ::)  Heck, who am I kidding....I still do.

From what I understand, that song was written during the Civil War.
