Subject: What Mistakes Did You Make as a Newbie?

Written By: CatwomanofV on 01/28/06 at 6:10 pm

I'm sure all of us had a made a few mistakes when we first joined the boards. For some of us we have to think WAY back.  ;D ;D

For me, my first mistake was my very first post-I started a thread looking for the name/lyrics of a song-but I posted it in the newbie section instead of the looking for lyrics section. (It was moved.)  Also, when I responded to whomever it was who answered my question-I don't know if I was having computer problems at that moment or what but I ended up posting my response twice.  :-[  I didn't know there was a little button called "Edit".  ::)

What mistakes did you make?

I would answer questions without reading prior post
and I was often stuck in the qoute box.

I didn't see the new members posting section, and I posted one in the Playful Penguin Place.

Got yelled at for it, too  ;D

My only mistake was that I didn't join inthe00s sooner :)

Early as a newbie, I made the mistake of posting topics that already existed.  I also often got stuck in a quote box.

I think my first post for "What Song Are You Listening to"? instead of just putting the title and the band, I wrote a whole paragraph. I've put the wrong song in the wrong decade, played link/chain games incorrectly, misspelled artists, (I had the grammar-spelling police after me jeff  ;) ) all pretty standard basic humiliating stuff for a newbie, but the sad thing is I could still make those mistakes.  ;D

That reminds me that when I was a newb, often I'd mistakenly post incorrectly in one of the PBG threads  :-[

Jeff was always there to tell me of my wring doings  ;)

Uh oh, if that's taboo, then add me to the list...

I also went to the politics section. I still read there sometimes, but I'm not so sure posting is the way to go.

As I'm hardly a seasoned member yet, I'm sure I can come back and report as I goof...

Go ahead, post in the political section. We won't bite.......hard.  ;D ;D ;D

made some spelling errors before I knew of our great spell checker

For the most part I'm familar with message boards and forums in general (I've been doing it since '98 or so), but I didn't get familar with the "feel" of it here for a few months.

I was "conditioned" on a couple other boards to stay on topic in a given thread. Now I know tangents are cool in most threads (as long as they're in control, etc). :)

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 01/29/06 at 8:38 pm

I made some mistakes on the game boards (especially with the chain one - that damn thread still screws me up from time to time, lol), maybe posting something with typos and/or not getting jokes until much later, learning how to use the quote box thingy. trying to figure out what "^" or "^^" was, trying to understand people who were always changing their names, stumbling into the politics boards, etc.

This wasn't really a mistake, but when I was a newbie here, I didn't know you were allowed more than 1 post per day in a Board Games thread.  A messageboard I once belonged to doesn't allow that

I posted a song in the wrong decade (and was corrected promptly)

Although I do have to say that the "What song are you listening to" in the 80's section didn't say What 80's song are you listening to until recently... so I didn't know it had to be 80's.

And I accused Apricot of being Alyssa. :-[

Honestly, I can't recall any mistakes I made when I came here back in 1999...

The board had a very different appearance and there weren't nearly as many features as there are now...

It could have been a board member who posted as a guest because he/she didn't want to come off as a "know-it-all" or something like that.  ::)

There was a time when Chucky disabled the function that allows guests to post because of a lot of spammers-and members who were posting nasty stuff as a guest.

Well honestly, I still feel like a newbie..  but some of the mistakes that were  brought to my attention were  posting out of sequence on an a-z thread or chain.  Posting too many at once without taking turns.. ( I didn't know at the time about taking turns),  and getting caught in the quote box. I am still learning the ropes on the entire site.. but I do enjoy it  very much.

One of the mistakes I made as a newbie was not doing a search before starting a poll on a music artist.  I did a few of those in the 70's section, on artists so long forgottem i didn't think polls already existed on them
