Subject: Proper way to shorthand a decade?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 02/07/06 at 1:55 am

I have a peeve about the "80's", "90's", "00's", etc thing, it seems inaccurate.  When you say "Dollars", you don't go "Dollar's"; when you're talking about "Sixties", you don't go "Sixtie's", so why should it be spelled 60's?

I think '70s, '90s, etc is the correct way to do it.

I guess I'm a nerd, I have a tendency to think about these things too. ;D

Yeah, I've wondered about this -- usually I do write 70's, but the apostraphe before it actually sounds more accurate. Usually an apostraphe before something means "ownership" of some kind (i.e. it's = it is, Bob's = belonging to Bob).

Well, you are right about pluraling words. When you make the plural of an ordinary word (such as monster), the correct way to plural it would be monsters; putting an apostrophe would make it possessive. However, with numbers, you can show plural with an apostrophe (according to a grammar textbook I read). You can say 1980's or 80's. (Or 1980s or 80s.)

About shorthanding it, I am pretty sure you can put an apostrophe before it (to show that the centurial part is left out) if you want. But I wouldn't use two apostrophes (i.e., '80's); that just doesn't look right. I would say, I like music from the 80's, or I like music from the 80s. However, in the second sentence, it can be a little unclear what "80s" refers to. So most of the time when I shorthand the decade, I use an apostrophe after the number (90's).

I say 80's, 80s, and '80s.

I wasn't aware that any one of the three was appropriate/inappropriate.

Come 2010 and beyond, what will we say?

I'll probably call it the 2-10's

Yeah, I could go with any of the three as well. ;)
