Subject: Thinking About It...

Written By: Apricot on 03/05/06 at 11:27 am

I realized one thing that may drive people away from this site is the annoying recurring themes.. I mean, so many of the threads are really the same thing, and many of those things aren't very interesting to begin with (at least not to an outsider)..

Maybe I'm crazy, but I see this every day on here.

So, I'm thinking.. in total honesty, not as an insult but as simple truth, what are you getting tired of on this site?

If all goes well, this thread could really progress and improve the forum.. if it goes how I'm anticipating, it's gonna turn into a stupid joke tangent. But it's at least worth a try.

I guess I would have to say duplicate threads....although, now that we don't have our normal search button, it's hard for newbies to know what has been talked about before...etc.  Also...there are a LOT of the game threads that are so similiar...but, I don't really go there too much anymore.

The biggest thing for me is tangents. I never thought I'd say this, but they occupy every thread ALL THE TIME. There are several kinds, too:

1. Relevant. Example, in a Cooking Thread:

A: I generally don't like teriyaki
B: Have you ever had it with beef?
A: No, only chicken.

Usually, those go on for a short time, and they're acceptable.

2. Semi-Relevant. These usually spawn off a joke.

B: No, only chicken.
C: OOOH! OOOH! I know an old Monty Python quote about chicken!!!! *tells stupid joke about chicken*
A: *breaks off into Monty Python Reference

These especially get annoying when it's over and over. Like, the "Have you kissed a girl?" thread.. I swear, every 4-5 days somebody goes in there and says "I've kissed a girl.. ON THE VAGINA!!!!!" and then it goes into 30 posts of sh-t.

3. Totally Irrelevant. One or two of these are okay, but these are the most common and most annoying. Example:

A: Today sucked. A car alarm woke me up early, it rained, BlockBuster didn't even HAVE the movie I wanted... Oy.
B: I musta set off that car alarm when I was having sex with your neighbor's car's exhaust pipe.
C: You gotta be gentle with exhaust pipes, treat them like a lady.
B: Totally.
D: Speaking of cars, I know a stupid joke about this...
E: GARY NUMAN!
F: He did a song about Cars, you know. It was the album "The Pleasure Principle".
G: Hey, F, I hope you know that The Pleasure Principle should be underlyned, as it's an album, not a song.
F: You spelled, underlined wrong, dumbass.
B: I spelled underline wrong when I was F--KING YOUR MOM!
F: LOL!
E: I LIKE PORN!
F: Pornography really got it's start in the late 60s, when...

Oh My God, I hate those so much. B and D are the ones that really piss me off.

Yeah, I'd say I get bored with threads that go ridiculously off topic... although I don't mind that if it's in a B.S. thread  (by B.S. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just mean a thread that doesn't have a specific topic such as the LTE/go anywhere thread, etc)

I should add that it's not so boring if you're here as the stuff's being posted, so when you click new there's only 1 or 2 new responses at a time.  But when I get here in the morning, click on a thread and find there's 3 pages of new replies, and the first page I read is total nonsense, I don't bother to finish reading it.  If the first few threads I click on are like that, then I usually just leave the PPP and go read stuff in the decades/politics/etc.

Honestly, there's nothing I'm really getting tired of on this site.  See, I came from another forum where things were limited ... ie: going off topic wasn't allowed ... if you listened to a song back to back in the "What song are you currently listening to" thread, otherwise it was considered spam, and you were only allowed one board game post per day

Here at inthe00s, I can have the freedom to post away in PBG, I can listen to multiple songs, and I can post mindless jargon just because I can and I love it 8)

As threads go, I like topics that appeal to a wide audience and almost anyone (gender, age group) can relate to or reply to. Sometimes there are some topics that are real specific to a certain group and not many can get involved. "Recurring themes" or redundancy of topics can get tiresome. If I don't want to participate in a topic that's not my cup of tea, I'll move around and find stuff I like. No need for me to complain, I just move on to something else. Not everyone's going to like, or post in every new thread, and that's not a problem. If you start a thread that seems to be going slow, I don't think the response should be to try another one to see if it does better. Be patient, give it a little time. It only takes a spark to get a fire burning.  my 2cents  8)

Yeah, we are all guilty of going off on a tangent which usually doesn't bother me. But when those tangents go on and on and on for pages of pages and it is utter b.s. then it bothers me.  I have seen some people laughing at some of it and I have failed to see the humor in it (maybe my sense of humor is different than others). But like Odyssey said, I don't have a problem with the "B.S." threads that do not have any specific topic (i.e. The Longest Thread). But when the topic is say, music and a few people are going on for pages about cars, I think that is a bit too much. I'm sure there are other threads for those kind of conversations and if not, create one. There was one time, not too long ago, someone (and you know who you are) asked me about my coins in some thread-I can't remember which one. After a couple of posts, I told him that I would PM him since I was sure that not everyone was interested and it was going WAY off the topic. So, I had a nice exchange about coins with him. I wish more people would do things like that.

I find enough to occupy my time here...I check out PPP, and if it's boring I go play a game.  I hide out in the 70s and check out culture chats. come back and add to the obnoxious and irreverent comments, laugh, get bored, go on...
I try to make a positive contribution ...sometimes...most of the time.

Exactly.

I post things the same way I would talk with somebody.

I've been to numerous Political conventions and find that the most common topic of discussion is sport.
Apply this to a forum and you'll find that in a thread talking about the theoretical applications of Roighes third law of combustion you may well end up talking away about flannels for a while.. OH GOD NO!

Yes, they're dull. But they're relevant, so they're acceptable. A few irrelevant tangents are okay, but they bastardize almost every thread lately.

I think tangents are unavoidable and most of the time, they don't bother me.  What DOES annoy me is when a tangent on one thread keeps going and spreads into other threads.  (I'm not talking about tangents that get made into new threads, only those who go on the same tangent in different threads)

Those get annoying, mostly (for me) because I was already sick of them in the thread they were in to begin with. Most tangents outlive their welcome.

dull is unacceptable. at least if what you're worried about is losing/not attracting new posters.

plenty of boring-a message boards where people compare the colors of their socks out there, bro. i don't want this to become another one. but if it's inevitable, so be it. i think you'll see a lot of OTHER people leaving in that instance, though.

Well, I don't want us to become TOTALLY sucky.. I just don't want every thread turning into dirty kissing jokes and stupid tangents about basting a woman at every turn. I mean, I love sidetracking, but within reasonable bounds.

The duplicate threads are understandable though, because the search feature is disabled so we really have no simple way of reviving an old one... and most of us (myself included) are too lazy to go back 30 pages to look for it...

The threads in the PBG is kind of the same thing... I notice most people respond to whatever happens to be on the front page, because in theory they're all pretty much the same... whether you're talking about 80's A-Z songs or "Name any 80's song" it still serves the same purpose in keeping someone occupied...

And the threads that have no useful purpose are actually useful in keeping alot of the nonsense out of the regular threads.  you think there's alot of nonsense/tangents now... just imagine if the B.S. threads weren't there... there'd be alot more.  That's the main reason I disagreed with the becks thread being locked.  Locking it served no purpose except to distribute the meaningless banter into other threads... and I would have rather seen it in one becks thread that i could simply skip over.

hmm, i wasn't much for the basting bit either, to tell you the truth. but i just called everybody involved sickos and ran off.

i got mixed reviews on the four pages where i was giving a certain member who shall remain nameless really bad romantic advice. but i regret nothing! i was working a long-term plan -- it didn't work, but if it had the goofy sex talk would have gone way down in the long run..

Yeah, I miss the "old" search feature.

I agree with you. :) Like I've said, back in the day my main board was a BTTF MB where you weren't allowed to go off topic, so I was "conditioned" not doing a tangent of any kind. Over time, I've grown used to/liking of the more easygoing nature here, but stuff like, say the car stuff in the original "Slow Night" thread is probably an example of going too far the other way. I think there should be a balance between the two.

P.S. I've no problem with this thread - I think constructive criticism, if done right, is actually a good thing. Hell, I'd rather someone told me I was inadvertantly annoying them than not know about it. Not only does everybody like different stuff, but we also tend to like discussing different things with different people.

i.e. I'm into decades and pop culture with guys like Donnie Darko, trivia/facts with Whistledog, more into friendly/everyday chatting with, say Erin, silly sexual jokes with Howard, etc etc.

^ That doesn't mean I don't "cross over" though. :D

The one notable example of "duplicate threads": there's a thread in PBG entitled "Name the song you are currently listening to", which is clearly a duplicate of "What song are you listening to right now?" (in the 00's forum). They are duplicates because all you do is mention whatever record you're listening to at the moment, and it can be from any time period. Since "What song are you listening..." was here first, "Name the song" is a duplicate thread and should go. :-\\

That's why I'm sometimes bothered by threads going too far off topic. When a thread starts taking on a strange life of its own, it can be misleading to someone who's reading it for the first time. :-\\

My steez, is this some sort of street language of which I'm unaware?  ;)

Actually, I think you'll find I am afraid to speak my mind, If I do, the Government will have my guts.

Please don't take this as meaning that we should not all be considerate, we should.
I love you all and without you I'm nothing.

I think the thing that I find the most boring is talking about how boring it is.  This past week the thing I have enjoyed the most were the joyrides taken on the hijacked threads.
You hit the nail on the head. There's been a rash of posts lately from people complaining about how boring things have gotten lately, and how the boards "ain't what they used to be," and I agree. And do you know why? Because back in the "good old days," every other post wasn't a complaint about how boring things have gotten lately, and how the boards "ain't what they used to be."  People didn't b*tch and gripe about every little thing, they just hung out and had fun and after all, isn't that why we're all here in the first place?

I agree. I certainly don't like every thread ever posted, but then, I don't feel compelled to read the ones I'm not likely to find interesting.  Of course, sometimes a thread title tricks me, and I end up reading threads that aren't to my taste after all; however, I have found a complex method of remedying this situation when it occurs. I will share my wisdom with you here:

The little arrow pointing to the left, oftentimes referred to as a "back button," will take you out of threads!

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need

I always liked that song. Who can decide what is boring or dull or exciting and fun, and whose judgement is best in determining what is good and what isn't for the group as a whole. It can't be done. I've been here 4 months now & sometimes I get online and I'm up and smiling  :)  & may be in the mood to get goofy/silly/dirty and post my nosensical babble and go off on a tangent, and try to entertain or get entertained by the many performers here. Sometimes I'm down  :( and may not be in the mood for that constant stream of whatever, and it's ok because there is something for almost everyone at anytime. Some people here have stronger, more aggressive personalities, while others are milder, tame, and introverted. I think all can peacefully coexist. Whatever I think this board/forum is, exciting, fun, boring, dull, lifeless, energetic, freakish, insane, off the wall, cool, dying, changing,  it's all my own opinion and perception and experience. I don't expect anyone to be like me and like everything I like and that's what I love about this place. It's an amazing collection of unique and different personalities. I love the differences between us. I  come on here and get what I need and also give back some of what I've been given, but sometimes I just take.  ;D  I also think we may need a break away from here to that thing we call a life.

Subject: Re: Thinking About It...

Written By: karen on 03/08/06 at 9:06 am

I do find it annoying when threads get completely highjacked. There have been a few occassions where I have posted something and gone back to see if there are any replies only to find pages of b*llsh*t or crude jokes.

In the thread that got locked we were talking about threads going off tangent being a problem and someone said that in real life conversations don't stick rigidly to the topic.  Whilst that's true, normal conversations veer off-course so rapidly as in Apricot's Tubeway General's third example.  But that it what happens here.  And if you are interested in the original topic it is tiresome to scroll through all the drivel to get to the relevant posts.  Eventually people give up.

Subject: Re: Thinking About It...

Written By: KKay on 03/08/06 at 10:55 am

Lately I have been approaching people via PM if I have a tangent that needs further exploration to avoid the hijacking issue.
Sometimes the tangents are so funny I'm glad it happened...I think you all know they dont' bother me at all becuase I find it's easy to get back to the point if you want to.
But if you need to go on about the mating season of the Bengal tiger while we are discussing the ideal charm bracelet, send a PM.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROMAN AQUEDUCTS

An aqueduct is an artificial (man-made) channel that is constructed to convey water from one location to another. The word derives from the Latin words aqua, "water", and ducere, "to lead". Many aqueducts are raised above the landscape, resembling bridges rather than rivers. Sufficiently large aqueducts may also be usable by ships. They are similar to viaducts, but carry water instead of a road or railway. While a road bridge often carries the roadway at a more elevated level than the rest of the road, such a variation of height is not possible for an aqueduct.

I didn't quote ANYTHING about off-topic.. I quoted the fact that you're mocking the point I have that every thread is turning into stupid sex jokes that go on in 3 page spurts. I quoted sh-t like THIS:

topith! peepil, pleeth! contrary to popular opinion, the topic ith NOT the penitheth!

let'th stay on target!

*clapclap*

Sounds an awful lot like mocking the point that this thread originally tried to make politely... I don't see the "everyone's having fun but you" aspect of it.

and don't think i don't understand that patronizing *slaps forehead* stuff. don't care for it, thanks anyway. i don't think your point is legitimate. i think it's a passive-aggressive control thing, frankly.

That was in response to this:

people who go off topic should be beaten, and whipped, and cut up into little pieces, and fed to stray dogs. their heads should be put up on stakes to make an example out of them.

The "*smacks forehead*" thing was in frustration about the fact that I've made the point SEVERAL TIMES that I'm fine with going off-topic when it's not every thread. And you're taking the point and turning into this stupid immature mockery-type thing. Do you even KNOW what the word "patronizing" means? Cause no context would make sense.. I assume you were going for "condescending", but that was in no sense condescending. I'm frustrated that you're either missing the point or just being an ass.

you know what, i actually laid back on this thread because i knew the last two on this subject had gotten derailed and i actually wanted to see this one stay serious. but even without me it went all off onto left field and finally i went ahead and dove in.

and to be honest with you, i find the three pages of sex jokes tiresome sometimes, too. i more like the word play and innuendo stuff, myself. i'll get with the occasional straight-up hot dog talk but it gets a bit much. i kinda let it roll off me and blow off steam by complaining to people on PMs about it.

anyhow, my guess is this is probably an adjustment; this whole board is very random with people finding it from all sorts of different places with all sorts of different temperaments. i personally am pretty free-wheeling and have gotten with people who are basically like-minded. everybody's likely to sorta shake out with folks who are more up their alley over the long run. i think the earlier threads, the six months threads, there were some folks who had some similar complaints to yours. if y'all get together and everybody knows when y'all start a thread the rules are a little different, it'll catch on after a while, ya know?

Geez Tia, I was wondering if I'd ever see that serious side  ;)  everyone's got one and I know I do.  I enjoy off color jokes & innuendos and also what I call the nonsensical babble but probably not as much as some. It's good to see discussion and not attacks when there's opposition or difference of opinion and some of us can be quite opinionated. I think i go thru phases where I just gotta be strange and goofy and giddy and a clown, and then other times I'm just not.
where was I?  ???  I don't know day to day what I'm gonna feel like or what i wanna do on the board. I'm just glad there is a wide variety.

A friend of mine once told me humans are among the few species on earth who find sex pleasurable. My (admittedly a little misanthropic) theory is that humans enjoy sex so much because we otherwise generally find one another so annoying and repulsive that otherwise we wouldn't ever touch each other.

When I was your age, I had never been on one either.

That still applies now, as I am 25 and have never, to this day, dated anyone. :o

Dude, it's totally valid.
1.  You can't call someone if you don't have their phone number..
2. I fyou don't understand the sentence, you must ask for clarification.

I don't know what you're complaining about.  Remember that time I wrote
"Louis called me ten times to talk about how salty the ham was."
and you replied,
"Sometimes with cheese."

so lay off, honey.
