I leave my computer on throughout the day or it goes into sleep mode. But, I leave it on so I can return at a more quicker pace. I mean, I do other things on the computer such as: organizing files, making webpages, writing school papers, researching, etc.

Yes, I agree the specific part would play a part in that, but to me, if you were part of a Freelance Writer's forum, wouldn't you be pretty darn witty and original? You get good and bad with each forum.. maybe they're like us at our low points, where this forum has no real cool people.

We should be lucky we have a great board like this.  There are many boards out there that maybe get or 2 posts per week, and those are on the good weeks ;D

I figured out the cause of that.  Seems as though the maximum connections was set too low.  I thought I had increased it ages ago, but it appears to have not happened.  I just changed it, plus a few other changes and the site seems to be running A LOT better now.

it seems quicker to me, but the last time I made changes I thought it was quicker too. 

I had some trouble this morning. I would imagine it was around 3-4am Eastern Time.

It wouldn't let me access the site, came up with an error message saying I'd either spelt the name of the site wrong (unlikely, it's a bookmark) or it was unavailable. Tried again 5 minutes later and it was fine.

I did see an error message in my email this morning, but I was hoping it was an old one.

The monitoring software I spent most of last night was still not working right yet either.  I did manage to finish the install this morning, so hopefully next time I can catch the issue.

I upped the levels way up... if you see them again, it's because the site is getting way stressed out.

I think it was disabling stuff at a load average of 4, which the server is always near.  I bumped it up to 40, which I have seen before too (that's bad, lower is better).

it means how much stuff the computer is trying to handle at once.  a 1 means, not much is going on, 10 means a bunch of stuff is going on.  With about 30-40 people connecting at the same time right now, it's at a 4.  If another 30 people tried connecting at the same time, it would probably bump it up to a 8 or 10, depending on what they are doing.

The server is just old at this point, and I'm paying a lot for it too.  They don't give me any price breaks as time goes by and the machine gets older.  They do that on purpose, because they know it's a lot of work to move to a newer/faster machine.  It's a 1.3 Ghz Celeron.  Most people have a 2 or 3 Ghz machine on their desktop now, with multiple cores, etc.  I've actually thrown away slower computers that were fine except for the fact that they are slow by today's standards.

If I didn't have the book to work on (which I really need to get going on), I'd probably just bite the bullet and upgrade/move.  Of course, the longer I put off the move, the better the machine I can purchase for hosting the messageboard (since hardware always gets cheaper).  I'm also willing to bet that January will see some sales.
