Subject: White or Red Wine?

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 04/04/06 at 12:44 pm

Most of the wine drinkers I know prefer red wine, but for some reason I've never developed a taste for it...

I like white wine... :)

White. Reds are usually too heavy for me-but I do like a nice blush every now and again.

I enjoy white wines more as sipping wines, but prefer red wines for heavier consumption.

I like a bit of both. I enjoy Merlots a lot. And also the occasional Black Muscat (that's a nice dessert wine). I don't drink wine all that much, so, as I've noticed, I tend to lean towards the ren wines more than the white. But, I'm always up for something new and don't mind tasting any kind of wine here and there.

That may be one of the reasons why I don't drink it much - it always gives me a headache.

I never really developed a taste for red.  The reds I've tried are way too sweet.  Maybe if I bought a good bottle I might enjoy it more.

Before I came to live in Australia, 'many moons ago', I would definitely have given my thumbs up to white wine. I used to love a very sweet one called 'spanish sauternes', which was great chilled to accompany roast chicken. Back in those days, I liked my steak to be well done .. no blood, thank you very much! Also, my culilnary tastes were quite limited .. other than meat & 2 veg, an indian curry was about as adventurous as I got.

Things have changed quite a bit over the years. Now there's very few foods I wouldn't try at least once. I like my steak either medium rare or rare. As for the wine, I quickly discovered that the few cheap reds I'd tasted in England/France & the USA bore no comparison to their Australian counterparts. I'm sure the standards have improved around the world since those days, but Australia has been producing very good quality wines, both red and white at attractive prices for many years. Nowadays, on those ocassions when I drink white wine, it is usually medium sweet or dry. I like Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc. 95% of the time, I drink red wines, and they are often soft, big, & have a lingering taste. Usually a shiraz, or blend of cabenet sauvignon, maybe with merlot or franc. Essential to wash down a tasty steak, although I also enjoy it with hot spicy thai food .. which in some ways is sacrilege, because the spices neutralise the taste of a good wine to a degree. Still, rules were made to be broken ....
If health issues are of concern to any of you here, I wonder how many of you have heard that recent research suggests red wine has protective benefits against cancer, rose is neutral, whereas white wine is a negative in that regard. The benefits apply mostly to men it seems. Here's just one of many links on this. http://health.dailynewscentral.com/content/view/95/63
Even more reason to drink reds!
:)

Don't they say that if you buy a Chardonnay - it MUST be Australian - as these are the best

Try Asti Spumanti it's a sparkling wine and is very sweet, to me it's like sugar water !
Also Liebfraumilch is a sweet white wine.
Basically if you look on the back of the bottle there should be a little black symbol of a wine bottle with a number on it, 5 = sweet and 1 = Very Dry.

FYI-spumonti is the kind of grape that the beverage is made from. Asti is a region in Italy and only the sparkling wines that are made there can be called Asti (like champagne can only be called that if it is made in the Champagne region of France). So, getting Asti Spumonti can be a bit expensive. However, Ballatore Gran Spumonti is a really good substitute for the Asti but is about half the price of the "real thing".
