Subject: Favorite Road Trip Songs

Written By: stingr22 on 04/08/06 at 10:58 am

I looked around to see where the best place for this might be and this seems like the most logical choice.  Feel free to re-direct me if you think it's a better place for it!  8)

Anyway, I'm taking a road trip to a friend's wedding and I'm loading up my Dell Digital DJ (like an iPod on steroids).  I'll be on the road for awhile and I'm loading it up with some favorite road tunes.  So I started wondering if any of you have certain songs that you love to listen to while travelling.  I've got about 40 songs loaded so far, but I listed 10 below.  These may not be my top 10, but 10 that I like a lot in no particular order.  What do you guys like to listen to on the road?

1. Why Georgia - John Mayer
2. The Road and the Radio - Kenny Chesney
3. Let's Give Them Something To Talk About - Bonnie Raitt
4. Take It Easy - Eagles
5. Home - Marc Broussard
6. Walking In Memphis - Marc Cohn
7. Wild Horses - Gino Vanelli
8. Sister Christian - Night Ranger
9. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
10. Free Fallin' - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Success, F1-11 Love Missile, M.A.D. (Mutual Assured Destruction), because happiness is looking at a mushroom cloud in your rear-view mirror.  (And success is having survived the 80s without having done so.)

OK, synthy/poppy stuff done.  I could do a road trip to that, but if there's more than just me in the car, I'm happy to slip back to rock.

Everywhere:
ZZ Top... anything they've ever written...  because nobody can look at the 1933 coupe from Eliminator and not think "road trip".

Wake up call:  the first onramp of the day gets:
Iggy Pop, Cold Metal.
Jerry Reed, Eastbound (or Westbound) and Down, from Smokey and the Bandit.

In a traffic jam, or any other situation where you're crawling along single-file in gridlock:
Timbuk3, *ssholes on Parade.

City driving, as you pull into the local greasy spoon:
Gino Vanelli, Black Cars,
Autograph, Blondes in Black Cars,
Dire Straits, Industrial Disease.

Long-distance cruising:  When you're the only thing on the Interstate and you feel just as good in the slow lane at 55 as you did at any other speed.
Joe Cocker, Feelin' Alright,
Timbuk3, Reverend Jack and his Roamin' Cadillac Church,
Depeche Mode, Route 66,
Grateful Dead, Hell in a Bucket,
The Police, Synchronicity and Synchronicity II,
Bruce Springsteen, Dancing in the Dark,
Pink Floyd, Run Like Hell.

If you only have a few bucks to spend on tickets:
Ray Stevens, Cannonball, from Cannonball Run,
INXS, Devil Inside,
Queen, Headlong,
Van Halen, AFU (All Fired Up) / Naturally Wired,
Sammy Hagar, I Can't Drive 55, or the 2001 NASCAR:Full Throttle updated version, I Can't Drive 65.

If you haven't gotten a speeding ticket lately, and you have even more cash to donate to the local constabulary:
Joe Satriani, Back to Shalla-Bal and Surfing with the Alien.
Billy Idol, Speed.

Or save those last three tracks... for the track.  Video games and Go-Karts are much more forgiving than roads, and if you  find yourself on a real track, you probably already know better than to be playing music... however much you mgiht want to!

I've always like driving through the desert while listening to the Eagles Hell Freezes Over CD.  It's very peaceful...there is nothing around for miles....

You should add some MJ to that collection...

We took a road trip when I was young and MJ's Thriller album just came out!
We listened to that repeatedly and non-stop. So much so that my Mom knew all of the lyrics inside and out!
