I don't know about bands, but songwise, I like "Last Kiss" by Wednesday, a very depressing and sad song

Gotta be Sisters of Mercy for me.

For relationships, it was "Temple of Love".  For current events for the past 20something years, it's been "Dominion/Mother Russia" and "Vision Thing".

For both - and where the Sisters really shone was when they blended the two to the degree that you couldn't tell the difference anymore - it was, and still is - "More".

"Some people get by with a litle understanding.
Some people get by with a whole lot more.
I don't know why you've gotta be so undemanding.
One thing I know...
I want more."
- As sung by every politician, of every party, to every electorate, since the dawn of time.

I like almost any dark or depressing music. I listen to it all the time, usually beautiful...  :\'(

Elliott Smith is very angry and can be depressing, especially when you know he kills himself later.
Echo and the Bunnymen's "What Are you Going to do with your Life?" album is depressing, but good!
Radiohead is a great despressing band at times...
Both They Might be Giants and The unicorns sound very happy and can be silly, but think about a lot of the lyrics!
Coldplay is usually...

Uhhh... Don't have my music with me, so I can't really say yet...

Yeah, his music is either really annoyingly happy or really insanely sad.

Elliott Smith has a way of making me feel horribly depressed. Marah has some depressing songs, too.... at least they are to me.

Written By: Dominic L. on 04/22/06 at 8:42 pm

I think of Marah as a generally happy band, but they do have a dirgy song or seven.

Elliott Smith wouldn't be half as depressing if he hasn't died...

No, he'd still be depressing.. it's just that is has a more haunting quality because he's dead.

I said half as depressing... still depressing, just not NEARLY as much as now... I mean, he made songs about dying and drugs, and you'd not think as much about it if it didn't really happen.

Elliott Smith has to be one of the most emotionally expressive singer/songwriter's I've ever heard...one can tangibly feel the sense of angst when hearing his songs. Of course, his death might make some of his stuff harder to listen to (because alot of it was so personal), but he has that rarest of abilities to bare the human soul.

Another song-writer I immediately compare to Elliott is Nick Drake, who was also wracked by depression (not so much drug-use) and died early. He released three albums, but was not well known at all during his lifetime...he gained a cult-following pust-humously. Though ironically he gained semi-mainstream fame through a commercial...

I find Radiohead quite depressing at times; as well as Travis, Stone Roses even the Verve. Quite alot of 70s music was quite sombre or at least wistful in tone; Joni Mitchell, Don MacLean.etc.

Alice In Chains: Whale & Whasp (even if it's instrumental,it's mad) Nutshell, Down In A Hole
Mad Season: Long Gone Day, River Of Deceit, Wake Up
Pearl Jam: Release (!!!), Indifference, Sleight Of Hand, All Or None, Dead Man, Footsteps
Hole (believe it or not): I Think That I Would Die

there are plenty more bit I think that'll do.

Angelo Badalamenti
(did the David Lynch soundtracks)

always beautiful, always sad....well, after all, so much of it is Laura Palmer put to music.

I've heard of Nick Drake.. don't much care for him, really. But he is sad, indeed.

Dude.. The Verve is uber-depressing.

yeah that's true, their music screams melancholy..well I dunno if you can "scream" melancholy but whatever..
beautiful music it is.

People keep saying THE SMITHS and MORRISSEY are depressing but I love them and find their music intelligently written and fantastic to listen to, witty at it's best.

LEONARD COHEN is a brilliant singer too but has the ability to depress the spirit - he's great.

Sappy- Nirvana(no surprise that I'd post them, there are actually a few that I can list from them)
Save it for a rainy day- The Jayhawks(this one isn't very depressing, just alittle sad)
Down in a hole- Alice In Chains(like Nirvana, could list more of them)
Seasons of wither- Aerosmith(not too depressing, just sad)
Only a memory- The Smithereens

It's hard to think of any others at the moment.

I'm a big fan of all 3 bands you mentioned here.. but Morrissey is one depressed mofo. He's unique in his sadness, though, because he does it almost in a sort of "Oh well, what are you gonna do?" sort of way.

There's nothing against depressing music.. some bands are actually good because they ARE so depressing (Black Heart Procession, Radiohead, Grandaddy, Etc.).

Dang.  I forgot Cohen.  I have a CD queued up for .  "The Future" will be the first song I hear, and probably one of the last.  I'll have a few happy minutes before the end.

Dude, that song used to make me cry. That's why The Verve is one of the saddest bands for me.

Even "Sonnnet", which has happy lyrics and not very sad chords.. they somehow manage to make it overtly depressing.

I used to think "Mr E's Beautiful Blues" and "Hey Man (Now You're Really Living)" were happy songs...

A fair bit of my music can be considered "depressing". Couldn't really only list a few.

Stay With Me - Bette Midler (soundtrack from The Rose) An excellent, yet depressing movie

Isn't It A Pity & All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
both beautifully written and performed, but depressing nonetheless,
and I love all 3

MORRISSEY has always admitted to being very insular and moody, that's the way he is.  It all adds to his uniqueness imo

It depends.. I find that MORE depressing if I'm already sad.

I know people who can't take that song because it upsets them so much.

Yeah, "Karma Police" is pretty damn depressing...I was just listening to Aimee Mann...that's depressing, in a sort of rueful, bitter way.

Not really depressing so much as semi-creepy, but I would submit "Karen" for this thread

The man who calls
And doesn't say nothing
Just called again
And didn't say nothing
Don't argue with him
He's tired of talking

Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
It's time to go home
Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
It's time to go home

The Johnsons need a night out
The baby needs a sitter
Everyone needs something
And now you need to go

Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
It's time to go home
Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
It's time to go home

Karen called the police
To get that man off the phone
The police called back and said Karen
Please go home

We traced the call to the phone upstairs
Karen please go home before he comes
Downstairs

Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
Karen go home
Get out of the house Karen
Take the baby and go
Home
