Subject: Dirty Jobs

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 04/30/06 at 7:49 pm

Ever see that show "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe (a Bay Area native)? He goes to these job sites that pretty much no one would want to participate unless they were getting good $$$, but he joins the crew and learns their "dirty job" which are: laying concrete, cleaning out beer fermenter containers, pest control people, Animal control, etc. Very unsavory stuff for a hard day's work.

So, what have YOU done that you'd call "quite" a dirty job?  ;D

I am a welder, a dirty job in itself. Back in the early 80's I worked at
the Philadelphia Navy Yard. One summer on the USS Forrestal I had
to replace ladder rungs welded inside the waste storage tanks. They
were cleaned out and sanitized but it was still a nasty job. I also spent
some time welding pipe in the bilge.

Well I used to be a nursing assistant about 20 yrs ago, and I've been a nurse for about 16 yrs, so both occupations bring you in direct contact with some pretty gross substances, including all those nasty germs floating around out there. So I'd have to say my occupation is pretty 'dirty' in the literal sense.

I would say waitressing....after working a long, busy night....I would come home feeling quite filthy. There's nothing like smelling like old food and having food stains all over your apron/pants/shirt....yuck, I hated that! :(

Surprisingly, I rarely get dirty in my current job (unless I have to climb into the bins to flatten the rubbish down). The dirtiest job i've had was my paper-rounds, only because I used to do 6 of the things (often more when I covered for other paperkids), and I used to come home thick with paper ink (hands, arms, face, clothes etc)... and it was a pain to clean off as well  :P

Very interesting posts here.. this is fun  :)

Probably one of my dirtiest jobs was when I was working for a remodeling contractor. There's nothing like cleaning the walls of a bathroom in mid-July that have 20 years of dirt, silt and tobacco smoke attatched to it. Minus air conditioning.  ;D

Also, taking off wallpaper in a hallway and wall of the living room was an absolute bore and plus totally draining on my hands, feet and knees. I remember just coming home and soaking my feet in hot water because they were so tired.

Going to the dump in the afternoon can be quite the experience, as well  :P

Ahh, sweet memories of working your way through highschool..  ;D

I must clarify, in my last post I mentioned working in a waste storage tank on
the USS Forrestal. What I didn't mention was that the waste was that of
the human kind.I also worked in a holding tank at a sewage treatment plant
at a pharmaceutical company.

I did OK in the pay department, I wouldn't want to do it again.
