Good Grief, it's 7.30am in the U.K which is like the middle of the night in America and yet there are 50 guests on thses boards don't people sleep?? and so many of them.................

we don't have the DVDs but we do have the Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown Christmas on VHS and we break them out and watch them a couple times each during the holidays.
as for the guest invasion. It's an unusually large amount of activity and is ok by me until they start complaining or criticizing. Then I think they need to register and be a part of the community.

guests can be very annoying sometimes. I find that a lot of them are opinionated and rude. I don't understand why someone would want to remain a guest, lurking about, when they can join the site for free. ::)

Programs, not people.. they're just programs designed to watch this forum.. usually, advertisers use them to try to find out how to appeal to people.

I wasn't sure what a "bot" was either, so here's the definition I got on Wikipedia:

I wonder if it's a lot of webcrawlers or something like that.. because it doesn't seem likely that 30 or 40 actual human beings would be viewing this site in guest mode at the exact same time, all in increments of no more than two seconds.

Well, I've been a member for over 12 years, and there have been times when there's been a multitude of guests in the early years; that's only because webcrawlers were able to access it easily and it would create a lot of traffic on the server. Chucky eventually did something about it.

Well, in the early years, guests were allowed to post without registering. But then it got outta hand, so Chucky disabled guest posting.

Yes. I think it's been that way for nearly three years now. The last time guest posting was enabled, it was too easy for spam to get through; there were like 30 or 40 new threads, all with spammage in them.
Yeah, often times if you see a post that shows up as "Guest", it's most likely from someone who deleted their account (or got banned). Any such posts from late 2013 or later are all from former members.

Must have been very brief... as there was no spike in the number of page views today (like there was last Monday and Tuesday, with such figures over 30,000).

The majority of these guests are bots from a computer program, they still need human power to pass the visual recognition when signing up.

Some within a second or two of each other, doing the same thing (that is, viewing the same thread or board index or whatever).

Holy smokes... I had not realized it had gone to such high levels again already. :o However, I have noticed double-digit numbers the past few days. This included viewing of random years-old threads.

It actually says "users online" (or "most online" for that particular stat), but the word "user" in this sense refers to anyone accessing the site, either in guest mode or logged-in mode.

In fact, I think it's the latest one that signed up: "DennisTot". There have been other monikers of that nature, consisting of a common firstname followed by three letters.)

I have a feeling that "DennisTot" will be going the way of the doodoo. There are some indicators that make me think "he" is either a bot or a spammer. Yeah, I figured that searching their IP's would be a useful tool. For a number of years I have been helping to fix Misherad Lyric entries on Amiright, and periodically the correction tool gets abused. There'll be a bunch of nonsensical stuff, accompanied by the name of the submitter, and the IP. And I've used various sites to look up IP's...and in recent months there've been some potentially spamalicious ones. There hasn't been any of that since April, though.

Sort of... prior to 2012 the Who's Online list displayed the browsers that everyone was using (in parentheses). But if it was a webcrawler, the browser name would be something really long, or the parentheses would have nothing inside.

But if a thread has so many replies, why would anyone want to actually go through with printing it? That would waste plenty of paper (and toner).

Well they've been registering accounts on here at an alarming rate, and there's nothing here to even stop them. It's outta hand.
Whatever the deal is with them "printing" things, I agree it's very strange. It just seems kinda random in a sense.

As I have been weeding out bogus accounts, I have learned something-which is kind of a strange glitch. Many times I will go to "Who's Online" where I can see everyone's IP. I click on the IP of guests to see if there is a bogus account (which doesn't always show up on the Member's List) and I am able to get rid of many bogus accounts this way. But as I do that, I can also see when board members are lurking. But, what is really strange is when the IP of a member who is online but will show up as a guest. ??? I guess it is a delay in reading who is online. There have been a couple of times where my own IP came up as a guest.
This doesn't always happen so there may indeed be 17 guests but there could also have been a few board members that had a delayed response from the system.

That may have happened to me last night. Severe thunderstorms rolled in suddenly and made me shut down the computer to protect it (that happens at times). I decided to look at a couple more threads so I pulled the site up on my tablet. I had apparently logged out on my tablet, and was too lazy to log in. So it would've showed me as "guest" even though my IP might have been my regular one...

I'm quite sure I was not logged in on my tablet yesterday - the site said "welcome, guest". Is it possible I was still logged in on the hibernated computer? That, I don't know. (Incidentally I logged in on my tablet today so it should continue to come up under my account assuming I don't log off again.)

I have said this before and I will say it again, not all of those guests are different people/bots. Many of them have the same IPs (that I can see). There have been times when I caught my evil twin on. When I clicked on the IP, my username (and Carlos') comes up.

Yesterday there were no more than 26 accessors at any one point during the day (which is really nothing to crow about). But the total number of pageviews was over 241,000! :o Makes me wonder if that was a different kind of “Guest invasion”. I also noticed that some threads’ viewing counts went up by several thousand.

I'm thinking that the evil guest invasion (they're obviously not real) may have something to do with the breakdown here. They're firing at us with all cylinders and maybe "clogging things up" to use a non-technical term. It just seems too coincidental that we are experiencing all these difficulties at the same time that we are experiencing a record high number of "guests". :P
