Gis did you see Room 101 last night with Sir Alan Sugar? I'd best not repeat here his dislikes, however the English language and how it has become bastardised by some, was one of his major bugbears.

I think it's a generational thing.  Growing up with text messaging and IM.  I taught middle school for awhile and my kids (and this was the gifted and talented program) would hand in essays with these shortened spellings in them.  They had a hard time understanding why they had to spell things out.  They'd say, "If you understand what we're saying, what's the difference."  Hmmm...  We had a chat about language and communicating to a wider audience outside of your specific peer culture.

I don't like text speak but I do use some of the accepted messageboard abbreviations such as btw, imho, and so on.

I got nailed once for using the abbreviation "gv't." in an essay in Government.  My teacher basically made the same point to me, and he was right.

It seems that a LOT of kids today just don't know how to speak what I'd call International English.  My English classes in high school were full of "hip-hop" kids who for the life of them just could not get out of jive mode.  I know slang like anyone might but damnit when I need to I can communicate in the Queen's English.  However I don't think the majority of today's high school students can do so.
