Subject: Underdogs!

Written By: Tia on 05/18/06 at 10:09 am

i was talking with some friends the other night and the topic turned to people/things that are exceedingly unpopular, to the point where at the moment NO ONE seems to like them. we started listing them and came up with the comedian carrot top, the star wars character jar-jar binks, and the animal rights group PETA. what are some other underdogs you can think of, people etc. whom you've NEVER heard anyone defend?

what about paulie shore and gallagher?

i think i'll try collecting a bunch of them and then start a poll where you can pick an underdog you think got a bad rap. i personally think carrot top has his moments, dammit! and i've always wanted to go onto a star wars message board and launch into a spirited, passionate defense of jar jar just to see what kind of flame war i can stoke up.

Believe it or not, his show was the mainstay (for some years) of the BBC's Christmas Night schedule, held in the same regard as Morecambe & Wise's yuletide offerings!

But whereas you'll still see repeats of Eric 'n Ern, Yarwood stays in the vaults (thankfully!)

Girl, you know it's true.  ;D

Vanilla Ice had the artistic integrity of a professional safecracker and Milli Vanilli were a pair of posing puppets. It was great watching them panic live on stage when the music jumped and kept repeating itself. Their manager Frank Farian was trying to be too clever after successfully putting his own voice on Boney M tracks and replacing himself with a more aesthetic black dancer.

Also successful was Black Box, the lead singers was Loleata Holloway and Martha Wash while the model that took her place and lipsynched it all was called Catherine Quinol.

However, I do like Milli Vanilli's music and I maintain that I am not going to rubbish it because it wasn't done by the people I thought it was - I like it.

Biggest underdog ever right, here's why.

Think about this, he comes from a pretty much nothing background right, does his best to help a country who's totally in the pits, real working class hero. He sorts things out, has to use some injenuity and guile, all of a sudden the old boy's network comes down on him like a sack of sh.it.#

;D It's okay, there were movies like Howard the Duck that are total bombs, but I use to watch them anyway. I think this may be due to the fact that back in the day when you didn't have a million channels to pick from and had to pay per view for select films (if you didn't have HBO), then you were stuck watching Howard the Duck or Harry and the Hendersons on Channel 12 in the afternoons.

Some of my favorites:

*Bob Saget: loved Full House and old-school America's Funniest Home Vids, despite his goody two shoes nerdiness
*(sometimes) Jay Leno: more good-natured than Letterman imo
*Pauly Shore: silly, low-intelligence humor, but seemed like a cool "dumb surfer dude" in his 1992-'96 movie heyday
*Gallagher: Who else does Sledge-O'Matic? ;D
*Jerry Springer: Nice and insightful ex-politician, unfortunately associated with the content of his crazy TV show

Thanks man. :D BTW, I didn't realize Zsa Zsa really was an underdog, though I can see The Love Boat being one (I liked its '70s-esque theme song).

charo was pretty hilarious in airport '79. that's one of my favorite dreadful movies ever. perfect for her.
