Subject: My cat passed away last night :0(

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 06/09/06 at 2:40 pm

My 15 year old cat, Samantha, who was struggling with Renal (kidney) failure, was put to sleep last night, when she was suffering from other complications. She was struggling to breathe due to fluid filling up 80% of her right lung. We took her to emergency care at 1am and didn't leave until almost 5am after making the tough decision of letting her go.

I will miss her dearly but I know she's in a better place  :\'(

Please except my condolences. I know how hard that decision is to make (been there, done that). Just know that your kitty is no longer in pain and I'm sure that she knows that you did everything you could for her out of love.

Thank you again. This has been a bit of a rough year for me on that end, so I think this affected me more than I thought it would, but again, I feel at peace right now, and the condolences are truly a help  :)

One way to deal with your grief is to take a visit to local Humane Society and adopt a kitty. It it NOT replacing your other cat but it does help fill that hole in your heart. And there are so many cats (and dogs) who need homes. You will be doing one (or more) of them a great service as they help you with your grief.

I love that idea. I think I just may need to be more settled until I decide to care for another cat, but in the meantime, I can focus on that as a good idea for the future. I know my mother is not physically fit to own another cat, and I think she will be even more saddened because Sammy was her companion for so long when I wasn't home as much. She lost that sense of having company around.

My condolences go out to you.  :\'(  Unfortunatly,  I have lost many pets myself, most the result of traffic.  Country, cars, cat, and dogs, just don't mix.  :\'(

The most saddest thing that happened to a pet I own, was when a neighbour's dog ate our baby rabbits, awhile back.

Because of that, we had to send the adult rabbits, to the country where they would be more safe.

They're not just animals, despite what some people may say...

Thank you, too, Paul. You're so right about them not being just animals. I know eventually I will be able to get a new kitty and enjoy their presence like my Samantha's, but they're truly will never be another replacement. She was so unique  :)

By and by, How old is your bundle of fluff?

Ohhh, that's good.. she still has some good time left. I think around 8 or 9 years, they want cats to  have kidney screenings.. so I highly recommend it and then you may not have to worry about their kidneys failing over the years.

You have my condolences as well, though I'm a bit late in offering them. :(

I sort of know how you feel - my cat went missing for over two weeks last June, and we all thought for sure that she was dead. She actually came back though, and is still with us at 19 years of age... But in the time that she was missing it was very difficult. I used to check if she was outside almost every few minutes for at least a week, and she returned just as I was finally coming to terms with her supposed death...

Wow, that's very difficult, if not more difficult. It's the not knowing part that gets you the most. One of my cat's kittens ran away when we moved and I may never know what happened to him. I just pray he found another home and was taken care of. I thank you for the condolences  :)

Yeah. You never expect an old cat that you've known your whole life to just disappear one day. But hey, at least she returned after all. :) It's definitely better, in my opinion, to keep your cat indoors if you can. Ours is too old and set in her ways to re-train though...

As for the kitten, you may have some consolation in knowing that cats are remarkable survivalists at least. Our own cat was a hungry young stray originally, who basically chose us - she wouldn't leave, so we kept her.

Did you keep any of Samantha's kittens?

;D No, 15 years old. According to the vet, a 15 year old cat is in their 90's in Human years.

Yes, especially at that age.. I'd worry, too. I think keeping a cat indoors is the best thing, especially in their later years. My cat had severe arthritis and she had a hard time jumping from one spot to the next, without slipping off.

We kept two, but one got hit by a car and the other ran away - so we didn't have much luck.

We had a little kitten like that who adopted us. It was a nice day and we had the door open. She walked it and went up to our other 2 cats who hissed and growled at her. She went into the bedroom and hopped up on the bed and went to sleep. I was with my ex at the time and we looked down at this little kitten sleeping on our bed and neither one of us had the heart to put her outside again. We said that we would keep her for about a week. I lost her a few years ago at the ripe old age of 18.  :\'( :\'(  Yeah, that was one LOOOONNNNNGGGGG week.  ;D
