Decadeology.

I guess that Decadeology was Donnie's precious and as much as he craved it, it ultimately became his undoing.

it's spam.  it might not be viagra or stock scams, but he's spamming the boards with useless crap.  He was asked to stop, and he didn't.  I log in every morning and delete a bunch of his threads, he still doesn't get the clue.

He did say something of being autistic or so...not sure if I believe that, maybe asperger's syndrome, people like that are known to have obessions, they just can't help it.
I'm sure it wasn't his intention to annoy members but hey..you decide,I respect that even if I don't totally agree.

That doesn't make him deaf. He was warned. There has to come a point where you keep your obsession to yourself.

Or, I KNOW he created his own forum for Decadeology, he could keep it there.

Not to sound cold here, but there's only so far OCD can carry you.. it doesn't put you above the law.

Even as a friend and fellow decadeologist (one who's sorry to see him go), I'll admit he overdid it sometimes, and didn't always seem to be able to "control" himself for long, even when he knew it was annoying people. So I can see the point there, I respect your decision even if it's not something I'd have done myself.

Now, I know some of the threads themselves could be a little spammy, but I am kinda disappointed 'cause I did (and other people too) put some effort into responses.

P.S. Like him or not, you have to admit, he did have alot of intelligent, thoughtful things to say, not just on "decadeology".

By that logic, if someone posts random lyrics or pictures 15-20 times a day, it's not spam (stupid pointless annoying message), as long as it gets responses.

It was sophisticated spam, but spam nonetheless.

True.

But what if the threads are spam-like, but the responses aren't? Me, and some other people did put some effort into his posts, too. I mean, I'll live, it's not like it's anything to lose sleep over, but it still sorta is a drag to have all that deleted, too.

That would be fine, but the spam was repetitive. Like, if there's one stupid thread that gets meaningful responses, that's fine. But if that thread comes up 5 times, you can't possibly have anything new to say after the 2nd or 3rd time.

I kept warning him to stop the decadeology too but he never really did. It was making its way into other topics because he thought it was more hidden that way. I think hopefully he will learn a little something from this experience that decadeology is nonsense and discussing it never will accomplish anything.

Yes, he did keep posting those threads even though he was warned about it. But I don't think he did it maliciously. Like chaka said, he couldn't help it. But, I also understand Chucky's point of view, too-and he does have the final say in the matter so I respect his decision. But I for one, will miss Donnie. But, he did start one of the most popular threads on this board: The Longest Thread Ever! So, he will live on.

Not sure if I'd go that far dude, but I do see where you're coming from. I will agree, if he was "threadjacking" other people's unrelated discussions (which I did not realize until recently), then that's wrong. If he blatantly ignored Chuck's warnings about it, same thing. As much as I still enjoy decadeology, I myself think he should've kept it in one thread.

There's some threads that minimally, or not at all, interest me on here, but I'd never call them nonsense.

Will it matter to anyone's life whether 1984 is closer to 1979 or to 1989? Of course not. But that doesn't mean it hurts to talk about it either (we're all "geeky" in some way. That's just Donnie's version of what power tools are to Tim Taylor). ;D

I will miss Donnie for various reasons. He was kind and thoughtful. I know what he was doing was more by impulse or the need to know, and so maybe I fed into it a bit, but I enjoyed it because it felt kinda neat that someone was interested in something so elusive as the '80s and the things that happened and what our thoughts were on it (as minimal as mine were). Donnie, whereever you are - I will miss you. Hang in there  ;)

Totally well said, I agree (btw, you had/have some excellent thoughts - I wouldn't call it minimal at all. :) I probably share around 95% of your opinions on most things, too).

Yeah, I think he was just super interested in it and always wanted to say what was on his mind. I often felt what he did was like, say when something happens at school and you can't wait to get home and tell everyone about it (I can be that way too. Especially with anything on the BTTF's). ;D

^ Agreed!  :)

Another thing is, when I was Donnie's age (around 16), I was just getting interested in a lot of things pop culturaly, so if I had joined a forum then (which I didn't because we didn't have a PC), this would have been an amazing place to discuss things. And no, I probably wouldn't have done it in the same excess as Donnie, but it would have been really interesting to hear other's thoughts on something like this - where almost anything goes.

Yeah, I probably started getting into more than just the "what I had lived or knew about" pop culture (the '80s and up) when I was 12. Especially when I watched an old SNL clip, or, say one of the Pink Panther movies, I'd think stuff like Hey, 1974 was only 20 years ago , look how much has changed, but it still looks sort of new too. It's more like today than it is the '50s.

I talked with my teachers and other people about this sort of thing alot back then. I wish I could've been on forums like this when we were that age (maybe they were around, but they'd be pretty slow, lol).

I do see why he does it so much too - he lives in a rural area with little kid siblings, so it's one of his interactions. We can't be too harsh on him.

Maybe not totally nonsense, but pretty close. "When did the 21st century begin?" The answer is obvious of course. He posted who knows how many topics about this same exact thing. You could go and try to analyze forever when you think the "feel" of a certain time began or whatever but it really never ends up anywhere and it's pointless. Donnie is fine, he told me he's getting sick of decadeology which is good. He will move on to some other board, will possibly learn from this and give up on the extreme decadeology.

Yeah, it's not an exact factual science, it's more general and opinionated per person. In a way, I think that's part of its appeal/interest, but at the same time, that means you could talk about it forever and still be back where you started, lol.

I do agree with your general viewpoint, though.

I'm not into that either, as I've said. He did have a good side, though...that is, when he wasn't talking about his obsession.

The only one of his threads that I find popular, however, is "Any members that have left the board w/o return?" So-called L-T-E is one that I don't find any useful meaning to (a "catch-all", so to speak), and I wouldn't post in it even if Dan Quayle were elected President. In its proponents' defense, however, I think it should've been started a lot earlier than Febuary 2005...after all, Rome wasnt built in a day. "Long" threads take time to achieve.

When Donnie deleted his account that last time, he re-joined under a female alias to watch people cry over his departure.  Then he revealed himself as Donnie, and did a thread about his disability

I remember that.

Well said :)

I will miss Donnie also. He was a nice guy and his opinions on things(to me at least) were very interesting. I enjoyed the 'decadeology' topics(even though I'll admit I've been running out of things to say in 'em for the past few weeks), and I enjoyed posting in them whenever I felt I had something to add. All in all it's a shame to see him get banned but on the other hand...

...he was warned several times to tone down his constant starting of 'decadeology' topics and eventually we were all banned from starting those kinds of threads at all yet he still continued. I also agree that it's not cool to 'hijack' other threads which he has done plenty of times as well. Maybe if he would've just bumped some of the older 'decadeology' threads instead of starting several new ones this would not have happened in the end. Donnie was a cool guy and I personally will miss him posting on the board but there were ways that this could've been avoided in the long run.

At one point, I also suggested him looking at old threads that had been started in the past and rejuvenate those, and I think he did do that a few times, but I guess it just wasn't enough  :(

Yeah, He did tone down on the threads for a good while, but lately he had started back up again(of course as I said his threads never bothered me it's just that he was told to not make so many and he didn't really stop)

Welps, I just read all five pages to avoid things that were already said 5428045 times before.

So...

Wouldn't you think that people would get sick and tired of repeating themselves tho' - this lad makes more disappearances and appearances than a rabbit in a Magicians Hat

Doesn't look like it here.  There's a 168-ish-page thread in PPP for those of you who obsess about members who have left/were banned.  :D

It's a highly interesting topic,you know!
Once that member you hated but you never showed it has left..BOOM! you're free to be as rude as you like and basically tell everyone how pathetic/stupid etc he was  :D

Sad but true?
Yes.

I don't understand how someone can dislike the LTE.  It's a stupid thread where people just talk and chat about anything and everything that comes to mind.  It's fun.

Nally likes threads to have a function.

Hmm...I agree he brought it on himself to be banned...though I do sympathize with him. The decadeology stuff (i.e. "When did the 21st century begin?") was getting extremely excessive and you can't really discuss it, since you could say anything and find something to make it make sense.

I don't exactly miss him. I can think of one banned member who I sorta miss, but I won't mention that person's name. :-X

Donnie Darko was banned? That's breaking news to me. I liked him. I happen to be the same age of Donnie. I did enjoy his topics, but they did sorta go overboard. I know what he's going through. I have ADD which is some what similar to what he has. I'm also obsessed with roads. I can't stop talking about them.

I wont miss him. I am sick of children who think a post count is the be all and end all in life. There are plenty more here who could be accused of the same things as DD.

Think quality not quantity.

I run a forum - considerably smaller and simpler than Chuckies gigantic forum here - but it gives me the function to allow members and guests the facility to only start 5 new threads a day and reply to 10 per day. It lets me choose the numbers and those amounts seemed reasonable to me. It meant a lot of the postwhores soon moved on - and I havent missed them at all.
I also removed the post count from the profiles - and just left it with profile titles and a "joined the forum date" - which showed longevity and seniority - which to me counts a whole lot more than a post count that only reveals you started 3000 threads titled "Am I posted out yet" and the like.
I have far more respect for forum members who have stayed with a forum for years and years - and posted great constructive threads - than I will ever have for someone who posts "bump" 40 times a day.

Yeah, he was friendly to me for most of the time...but he had a darker side which got him booted last fall. I won't say anything more. :-X

He did say something of being autistic or so...not sure if I believe that, maybe asperger's syndrome, people like that are known to have obessions, they just can't help it.
I'm sure it wasn't his intention to annoy members but hey..you decide,I respect that even if I don't totally agree.

I probably know him better than anyone on this board, and also understand he has several mental conditions which make him behave the way he does. Believe me, it's not a ploy or anything like that, he has to cope with it every day. But I do understand that you have to set limits - and, unfortunately he seemed to have overstepped these limits (though I don't agree with banning him, it's not my decision anyway).
