Subject: What helps put you to sleep?

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 08/14/06 at 12:21 pm

On our early morning show today, they were discussing people's reliance on sleeping pills and saying there could be alternative ways to putting your mind to rest and falling asleep.

What are a few that you can recommend?

Usually a good cup of Horlicks does us well, but after a long tiring day, sleep is the only thing we are looking for.

Read a boring book

I use to read quite a bit when I was living at home and had my own bedroom, but now that I'm sharing a room with somebody - I am more distracted and can't seem to put myself to sleep with a book like I used to. But, when I did, I loved reading something from my "library" and letting it take me to another world!  :)

Have you reach the bit on the community of ideal rulers of such and the parttext concentrating on defining what a philosopher really is?

Aside from "rigorous exercise" (which I don't get alot of lately).....

I lie on my back and take slow deep breaths, counting backwards from 100 with every breath.  The idea is to focus your attention on the breathing process.  Slow it down as much as you can while keeping the breaths smooth and regular.  It's a self-hypnosis process.  If it doesn't put me to sleep, it certainly relaxes me and helps me rest instead of lying there frustrated because I can't sleep.

Reading at night will usually make my eyes heavy so that I can fall asleep.

I think that's a helpful way of relaxing. I used to put my cd player on the floor, play a complex classical piece of music and listen to it while staring at the ceiling - laying flat on the floor. For some reason, it really put me at ease, especially if it was one of those pieces of music that completely transcends you.

I need almost complete silence and darkness to fall asleep.  I have a fan on, so that creates some noise but it's not obnoxious.  And it has to be pitch black.  So, I use a sleep mask over my eyes to block out any light.

Oh yeah.  I like pitch black for sleeping too.  I don't mind the sound of the traffic -- I'm used to that.  But I don't like it if someone else in the house has a tv on or if people are talking in the other room (like when my kids have friends overnight).

Sometimes Carlos will put on a Sherlock Holmes (with Jeremy Brett) or a Cadfeal (with Derek Jacoby) DVD and I am out. It is not that I find them boring by any means, but it is relaxing. I don't mind him watching movies just as long as they aren't loud. One time he put on Saving Private Ryan and it was so noisey that I couldn't sleep. Bogie movies are quiet. I can sleep with them on.

I rarely fall asleep with it being pitch dark unless I am SO tired that I can't do anything but sleep. Yet, I will only need a slight bit of light, like a small night lamp. I even use to sleep with a candle burning, but I know that was not very safe  ;D

Yeah, they're not even safe when you ARE awake...a couple of my dorm buddies almost set the whole building on fire because they left their incense candles burning (you probably can guess why they burned incense ;) ), but as it stood, it only set off the fire alarms and sprinklers and flooded the floor.  Oops.

I have to have my head just right, propped up slightly, a fan blowing across my lower body, pillow between my legs and then I'll read until my eyes won't stay open. Then turn the lamp off and drift away.

This is the perfect scenario, usually I'll drop a bunch of pills and crash sometime during the morning.

Before we moved in together, I whittled my TV time before falling asleep quite a bit. My routine became listening to classical music and reading a book, then turning off the light and turning on a night light and then falling asleep to classical music.

I don't need anything to help put me to sleep, I can pretty much fall asleep anywhere, anytime.
Tuesday night I was getting an MRI done on my head and I dozed off in the tube. :)

My dad is the same way.  He can sleep the "El" Trains back in Chicago.  I can't even read on the trains, the ride is so bumpy and noisy.

There is a trick to falling asleep in noisy places such as the El or an MRI tube. The noise is usually rhythmic.
If you can concentrate on the rhythm rather than the noise it's easy to fall asleep.

If you don't want to numb your mind to sleep with television, if it is cold weather you could try wearing some sort of knit cap and socks to bed. Keeping in the body heat sometimes helps, even if it is definitely not romantic to wear such items....
Also, imagine a pretty garden with birds and butterflies, focus your mind to the pretty scenery and count your blessings and/or say your prayers if you wish and this often helps instead of imagining a flock of very dull witted but cute sheep.

Tv in the background helps, along with the smell of my hubby.
Sounds weird, but I spray his cologne on my pillows sometimes.

I also like the sound of rain :)

I can function on Perc but I'm usually loopy.  I take it for the pain I'm having with this stupid-@ss kidney stone that hasn't passed.  It makes for a fun show on Fridays when I'm broadcasting.  :D

Generally I fall asleep without too much problem though I prefer the room to be reasonably dark.  If I'm having trouble settling because my mind is whirling I slowly think of the alphabet in my head.  Really focus on each letter and what it looks like, varying the colour and font of each one.  This gives the mind something to focus on that isn't to attention grabbing and you can just drift off.

I can. I used to go to work after taking two of those and downing a grande Frap from Starbuck's. Frickin' wired me for the rest of the night and helped me deal with that pain in the ass job.

I do something similar - I try to think up lists of items based on the alphabet.  Like, a male name for each letter of the alphabet, or a city, or a holiday item.  Nothing demanding - just enough to keep my brain occupied until I drift off.  Works like a charm.
