Subject: Funeral Songs

Written By: La Roche on 09/25/06 at 1:02 pm

I was thinking.. what song(s) would you want played at your funeral.

For me this is important.. I have a very religious family and as such, unless I had listed specific songs, I'd end up with awful hymns.

So, I got to thinking about it.. and came up with 3 definte songs.

Cemetary Gates by Pantera
Knockin' on Heavens door by Guns n' Roses
Street Fighting Man by The Rolling Stones.

So what would you guys want at your funerals?

Nobody is allowed to say Freebird or My Way.  ;D

It's a really interesting question you've  posed and truly, I've never given it a moment of thought.  But now I will.  And I will be back with an answer at some point.  I'm curious to see what others say to this.

I want "Danny Boy" played.  Not because it has any signifigance to my life whatsoever, just because I think it's one of the most beautiful songs in the whole wide world.

Oh, maybe "Sleepwalk"  by Santo & Johnny...

Well, not at my funeral, but at somebody's go ;)...

  Just remembering, here...

"Amazing Grace"  was played at Grandma's funeral in 1980 and an Elvis song (can't remember which) at Dad's in 1993...

"If We Hold on Together" - Diana Ross (the song on the credits of the first Land Before Time movie)

"Time Of Your Life" - Green Day

And also, "Babybird" - The Wallflowers.....here are the lyrics-------->

Come back babybird
With your dirty wings in tatters
Come home where you belong
Nobody knows you better
Now bring back your velvet heart
And we'll make you brand new feathers
Sleep through the morning light
With your arms around your brother
Babybird
come back home
Babybird
you were never really on your own
Now outside faces cry
With the tears of lonesome orphans
And behind every mask
is the face of another
Wherever you have been
wherever you took cover
No arms that pulled you in
could hold you like your mother
Babybird
come back home
Babybird
you were never really on your own
When all my colors fade
And my wings, they've turned to leather
I'll know the reasons why
God let me get older
When all my days are through
And I fly these hills no longer
I'll lay beneath the stars
And I'll watch you flying over
Babybird
come back home
Babybird
you were never really on your own
Babybird
come back home
Babybird
you will never be all alone

My Mother got hysterical when she heard that song 2 or 3 years after my brother passed away in 1995.

:( That's sad Howard.

Well, you can take this in to account.

It's about the celebration of life..

'So as you read this know my friends/
I'd love to stay with you all/
Please smile when you think of me/
My body's gone that's all.'

Be thankful that you got to know your brother and spend time with him, because as long as you think about him, he's still with you.

"Happy Phantom" by Tori Amos.

And if I die today I'll be the happy phantom
And I'll go chassin' the nuns out in the yard
And I'll run naked through the streets without my mask on
And I will never need umbrellas in the rain
I'll wake up in strawberry fields every day
And the atrocities of school I can forgive
The happy phantom has no right to bitch
oo who
The time is getting closer
oo who
Time to be a ghost
oo who
Every day we're getting closer
The sun is geting dim
Will we pay for who we been

So if I die today I'll be the happy phantom
And I'll go wearin' my naughties like a jewel
They'll be my ticket to the universal opera
There's Judy Garland taking Budda by the hand
And then these seven little men get up to dance
They say Confucius does his crossword with a pen
I'm still the angel to a girl who hates to sin

oo who
The time is getting closer
oo who
Time to be a ghost
oo who
Every day we're getting closer
The sun is geting dim
Will we pay for who we been

Or will I see you dear and wish I could come back
You found a girl that you could truly love again
Will you still call for me when she falls asleep
Or do we soon forget the things we cannot see

oo who
The time is getting closer
oo who
Time to be a ghost
oo who
Every day we're getting closer
The sun is geting dim
Will we pay for who we been

Say Goodnight Not Goodbye
Beth Nielsen Chapman

Say goodnight not good-bye
You will never leave my heart behind
Like the path of a star
I'll be anywhere you are

In the spark that lies beneath the coals
In the secret place inside your soul
Keep my light in your eyes
Say goodnight not good-bye

Don't you fear when you dream
Waking up is never what it seems
Like a jewel buried deep
Like a promise meant to keep

You are everything you want to be
So just let your heart reach out to me
I'll be right by your side
Say goodnight not good-bye

You are everything you want to be
So just let your heart reach out to me
Keep my light in your eyes
Say goodnight not good-bye

I Will Remember You
Sarah McLachlan

I will remember you, will you remember me?
Don't let your life pass you by,
Weep not for the memories
Remember the good times that we had?
I let them slip away from us when things got bad.
How clearly I first saw you smilin' in the sun
Wanna feel your warmth upon me
I wanna be the one

I will rememeber you, will you remember me?
Don't let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I'm so tired but I can't sleep
Standin' on the edge of something much to deep
It's funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we can't be heard

But I will remember you, will you remember me?
Don't let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I'm so afraid to love you
But more afraid to lose
Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose
Once there was a darkness
Deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light

And I will remember you, will you remember me?
Don't let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories
Weep not for the memories

To Where You Are
Josh Groban

Who can say for certain
Maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me
Your memories so clear

Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
Your still an inspiration
Can it be

That you are my
Forever love
And you are watching over me from up above

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile
To know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing
All power can't be seen

As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me
Everyday

Cause you are my
Forever love
Watching me from up above

And I believe
That angels breathe
And that love will live on and never leave

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile
To know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

I know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

Billy Connolly - Pain In My *ss
Denis Leary - *sshole
Roy "Chubby" Brown - Basically He's a C*nt

There'd probably be some John Valby in there to really clear out the dead wood.  Anyone who shows up and has enough of a sense of humor to make it through that playlist is welcome to all the booze that my last few bucks can buy.  (You're damn right I'm having the carcass recycled for anatomy lessons at the local hospital and incinerated as cheaply as possible.  Leaves more money for the wake!)

This is an interesting topic. I will not have a funeral, I told the boy, upon my demise if he
can make money of my body have at it. If not I will be cremated, if this is the case I would
like John 19:41 from the Jesus Christ Superstar Soundtrack to be played on my way into the
fire.

No problem Howard, we all lose people, it's important that we remember what we loved about them.

That's kinda what Dave is saying there, As soon as we all realise that life is a game and we should enjoy it, then we will get more from life. The same thing carrys on even after somebody is gone, if we celebrate them and remember the fun things they did and said, the ways in which they made us happy then they're still with us all the time.

I'm not having a funeral, but if I'm dead I won't know what they do with me, so if someone decides to go through all that trouble, I hope they just play L.A. Style's "James Brown Is Dead" and dance on my grave like Dancin' Bubs.
