Subject: What are you allergic to?

Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 09/30/06 at 12:27 am

Well....if I eat strawberries (which I still do)...my gums swell a bit.  I can't eat anything real sweet (chocolate, maple sugar candy, etc)....I get this strange allergic reaction (my face gets all hot and tingly).  And...I think I am either allergic to water or the soap that I use...because everytime I go to take a shower...my skin gets itchy! ???

Maybe it's the material of your towel or washcloth you're allergic to?

It could be the pressure? XD That doesn't make sense, though... Hmm... Water's not a good thing to be allergic to! Perhaps it's not allergies...

I have sensitive skin though...maybe that has something to do with it...I dunno.  I have heard of people who were allergic to water though...I guess they have to take a bath like a chinchilla does....a dust bath...can you imagine someone rolling around in a dust bath? :D ;D ;D

I seem to have some sort of weird allergy to the humidity in my bedroom.  Ever since I moved, the humidity in here has been so bad over the summer, that it caused the skin around my nose to peel away, so I went to the doctor, and asked him if it was an allergy of some sort, and he wasn't sure, but prescribed a special cream that should make it go away.  It's working so far ...

Must be something in the water in which your skin is not reacting well to. Find out what is put into the water during the filtering process then you might have your answer.

What soap do you use?  Try using Dove for sensitive skin for a couple showers and see if that makes a difference.  If it does, it must be the soap.

I use different things...lately I've been using different shower gels...maybe I will get some of that Dove for sensitive skin and see what happens.

Check to see if glycerin is one of the ingriedients in your shower gels.  My sister is allergic to it, and if she uses any kind of product that contains it, her skin breaks out and gets itchy.

Seasonal allergies.

I'm allergic to cats (I have 2) and horses.  I used to be allergic to dogs but I'm not anymore.

When I was a kid I couldn't even be in the same room as a cat or my eyes would swell shut and I'd get hives.  Now, I'm OK unless I touch my eyes after petting a cat, then they get itchy and swollen.  Basically I'd have the same reaction with horses...I've avoided contact with horses but my daughter has started taking riding lessons...usually on the way home I find myself starting to wheeze.  I'm not sure if it's "all in my head" or if I'm still allergic to them.

Normal stuff I'm allergic to are mold, grasses, dust and roses. My dad was allergic to shellfish, so I never attempted to eat shellfish and still have not.

I'm allergic to different strengths of penicillin, but not totally allergic to it. I can take the pink stuff and not have a problem, but when I took Augmentin my throat was closing up.

I am also allergic to sage.

Are you sure it's the penicillin in it that you're allergic to?  If you can take regular penicillin, it's probably the other drug.  My poor middle guy is allergic to all "cillin" and "mycin" antibiotics so that makes it difficult to treat infections in him because they usually prescribe the "mycin" family if you're allergic to the "cillin" family and vice-versa :-\\

Well, after I wrote that, I checked what augmentin was, and there was another chemical in it called cephalosporin. Cephalosporin is also found in Keflex & Ceclor, which are two other drugs I'm allergic to. So, I just learned something new here. It wasn't amoxicillin all that time, it was the Cephalosporin..  ;D Good to know.  ;)

Wrong.  When your hands get cold, they are not supposed to turn purple.  That is abnormal.  My mother has the same problem.....if her hands are exposed to the cold for too long, they start to turn red and itch, almost like an allergic reaction.  She has to wear extra-thick gloves to combat this.

The condition is called cold urticaria.  Here is some more information about it: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/allergy/AN00693

Huh... If it's just turning purple, but doesn't itch, then it's something to do with the bloodstream.

Very common.  That's why the docs always ask you if you're allergic to any medicines.  Always make sure they know.  If they don't ask, tell them, but they're always supposed to ask.

Is it possible to be allergic to cold weather? When exposed to the cold, my face, neck and hands get red and itchy.

Mayo Clinic asthma and allergy specialist James Li, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
Answer

Yes, it is possible to be allergic to the cold. In some people, cold temperatures trigger the release into the skin of histamines and other chemicals made by the immune system. The cause isn't clear. But some people appear to have overly sensitive histamine-containing skin cells.

I actually went to highschool with a guy who was allergic to the cold. He always had to have a jacket or sweater on..

One other thing, if your hands or feet get cold and purple, it could be a sign of Raynaud's Disease. It's a narrowing of the blood vessels to the skin. Here's  a link to the condition.
