Subject: To my fellow tea drinkers!

Written By: Gis on 01/04/07 at 10:47 am

I was at this museum last week about the history of the house, furnishings etc.....so anyway there was this extract from a ladies magazine of about 1738 when tea drinking had become all the rage. It basically said you should never serve tea at a tea party without alcohol to acompany it. This is because tea was possibly a depressant that also caused flatulence when drunk in large quantities! So they suggested that ladies offered their guests 'cordial' ie; brandy to drink along side their cup of tea so said guests would stay free of depression and gas.  ;D

I'm not usually much of a tea drinker but if that's the best way to serve tea, then I might just start drinking it more.

I've always wondered how they stood to wear those long sleeved dresses and all of the crinolines, slips, corsets, and whatnot.  But when you're drunk, you don't care what you're wearing!

This really explaines a lot...

No, it's tea that gives you gas, which is why you must drink it with alcohol.  At least that will be my excuse.
