Subject: McDonald's seeks 'McJob' rewrite

Written By: Philip Eno on 03/20/07 at 3:05 pm

The UK arm of McDonald's is planning a campaign to have the dictionary definition of a McJob changed.

The Oxford English Dictionary says it is: "An unstimulating, low-paid job with few prospects, esp. one created by the expansion of the service sector."

I didn't even realize that the word "McJob" was in the OED. What about the word "McSick"-what you get after eating at McDonald's?  ;D ;D

I hope OED doesn't bend and change the definition.  A McJob is precisely that.

No one ever chooses to work at Mickey D's as a career move.  It's pretty much a high school kids sure bet for employment.  My brother did that his Junior and Senior year, after God knows how many years the smell of Mc Donald's makes him sick.

This morning I was out running a few errands and needed a cup of tea for refreshment. So for inspiration I went to McDonalds, just for a cuppa, no food. The manageress who serve must had got out the bed the wrong side this morning, she just had a smile on her face. But later on, she was in the kitchen area asking a member of staff how many certain burgers are there in stock in the kitchen area. The member of staff sort of grunted and pointed, and the manageress said "You can count can you?". I find this a good example for a McJob.

Work Experience is when you are at you last year of school and a month is spent at an establishment (unpaid) for the experience, or if unemployed, after a period of time you are forced to take up some form of voluntary work to gain the experience.

In 1990, I was working for McD's. Had been there for 6 months, roughly.

I was on the grill, with another worker.
We were in a newly-built location, and we were PACKED, that Saturday.
Only 2 of us on grill, and 7 orders behind, due to lack of staff.

We were slapping down patties, and one of the griller arms came down, and somehow locked on my co-worker's hand.
I had to break the mechanism, to get his hand out.
He suffered 3rd Degree burns to his hand & wrist.
As soon as we got him out of there, I shut the grill down, to clean & sterilize it.

My Shift Boss, Rose, asked me what the hell I was doing.
I explained, and she told me, bluntly, either get that grill scraped off & cooking, or turn in my uniform.
(At that time, employees weren't drug tested. Plus, it was VERY apparent that he bled. He was also an admitted coke fiend.)

I stripped off my shirt, and exclaimed in front of all present as to what happened.
I came back 3 days later for my final check, and was informed that Rose had been fired.
The General manager wanted me on as a Manager Trainee, but couldn't pay me properly, because I was only 15. I declined.

I don't know what may have changed since then, but it was enough to shut me off permanently.

No....I don't know how they fixed it. I walked out, immediately after that whole incident.
One good note was that I wasn't penalized for breaking it, since it fell under "Rescue Operations".

You know, Robin Williams did a bit about being in McD's on Rodeo Drive:

"Yeah, they always have the same look on their faces, like, 'What's wrong? Do you want a McShake, or a McChampagne, or a McFleetwood, or a McJagger? Whaddayawant?' "

Quite amusing. It's on his "Throbbing Python Of Love" LP.

What about the greasy fries?

I love their fries, but only in moderation.

They give you more salt when they already put salt on the fries for you.

They don't give you more salt.  I have never seen them hand you fries and then hand you more salt.

I just see them sprinkling the salt over the fries when draining on the drainage thingy.

Same here.  No McDonalds I've ever been to hands you the fries and then hands you more salt to put on them later.  They are salty enough as is.  I usually blot the fries on napkins before I eat them.

too much salt is bad for blood pressure, but the salt itself doesn't raise bad cholestorol, trans and saturated fats do.
