Subject: Talk Like a Pirate Day

Written By: Bobo on 09/19/07 at 10:24 am

Ahoy me hearties

I completely forgot to check this on the calendar this morning, but Wikipedia has just reminded me that today is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

For those unaware of the erm... festival, it was invented by the super-geniuses John Baur and Mark Summers, for everyone to talk like a pirate on this single day. Today on Uncyclopedia, for example, they have replaced their traditional logo of a squashed potato with a potato wearing an eyepatch.

Everyone can do anything they wish on this day so long as it has something to do with pirates. Apparently.

More information here. Have a good one!

A health to the pirates bold seafaring.
So we say and so we do.
There's none set sail with finer bearing.
    Sailing on the ocean blue.

"Arrgh!" says I, and "Aye!" says he.
We'll stand on board as brother.
We'll rule the sea, just you and me.
Let the devil take another.

Now Calico Jack wore stripèd trousers.
So we say and so we do.
They hung him up with his rabble-rousers.
    Sailing on the ocean blue.

"Arrgh!" says I, and "Aye!" says he.
We'll stand on board as brother.
We'll rule the sea, just you and me.
Let the devil take another.

They all felt safe in Panama County.
So we say and so we do.
Till Henry Morgan claimed the bounty.
    Sailing on the ocean blue.

"Arrgh!" says I, and "Aye!" says he.
We'll stand on board as brother.
We'll rule the sea, just you and me.
Let the devil take another.

Well, Blackbeard's men would test your mettle.
So we say and so we do.
Bad cess to them that meet the devil.
    Sailing on the ocean blue.

"Arrgh!" says I, and "Aye!" says he.
We'll stand on board as brother.
We'll rule the sea, just you and me.
Let the devil take another.

Our golden days have long since ended.
So we say and so we do.
We're thrown in shackles, none defended.
    Sailing on the ocean blue.

"Arrgh!" says I, and "Aye!" says he.
We'll stand on board as brother.
We'll rule the sea, just you and me.
Let the devil take another.

Here's a great pirate tune by Adam and the Ants on their wonderful Kings Of The Wild Frontier album.  (Sorry, I don't know how to add an audio clip)

Jolly Roger
In days of old, when ships were bold
Just like the men who sailed them
And if they showed us disrespect,
We'd tie them up and flail them.
Often men of low degree
And often men of steel.
They'd make you walk the plank alone
Or haul you 'round the keel.
Hoist the Jolly Roger
Hoist the Jolly Roger
Hoist the Jolly Roger
It's your money that we want
And your money we shall have!
Of all the pirates on the seas,
The worst of them was Blackbeard
So damnable, a prince from hell,
He was the one they most feared.
Any man who sailed with him was taking quite a chance
He'd hang them from the gallows just to see if they could dance.
Ha ha!!
Hoist the Jolly Roger
Hoist the Jolly Roger
Hoist the Jolly Roger!
It's your money that we want
and your money we shall have!

"Cat Morgan Introduces Himself", by T.S. Eliot ("Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats")

I once was a Pirate what sailed the 'igh seas-
But now I've retired as a com-mission-aire:
And that's how you find me a-takin' my ease
And keepin' the door in a Bloomsbury Square.

I'm partial to partidges, likewise to grouse,
And I favour that Devonshire cream in a bowl;
But I'm allus content with a drink on the 'ouse
And a bit o' cold fish when I done me patrol.

I ain't got much polish, me manners is gruff,
But I've got a good coat, and I keep meself smart;
And everyone says, and I guess that's enough:
"You can't but like Morgan, 'e's got a kind 'art."

I got knocked about on the Barbary Coast,
And me voice it ain't no sich melliferous horgan;
But yet I can state, and I'm not one to boast,
That some of the gals is dead keen on old Morgan.

So if you 'ave business with Faber- or Faber-
I'll give you this tip, and it's worth a lot more:
You'll save yourself time, and you'll spare yourself labour
If jist you make friends with the Cat next door.

MORGAN.
