Subject: What are the best songs to exercise with?

Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 09/21/07 at 1:56 pm

What are you favorite, energizing songs that you like to listen to while exercising?  I need some new ideas for my MP3 player.

I know as cheesy as it may sound, but I love to listen to the song, Good Vibrations, by Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. It's such an upbeat song and helps you keep up with the pace.

Well....three years ago, when I took an aerobics class, we always exercised to some music. For a project in that class, my partner and I devised an aerobic routine which consisted of the following songs:

"Let's Get Loud" by J Lo
"Arrasando/It's My Party" (both English and Spanish versions) by Thalia

And the other day I tried exercising to Jem's "They"...which has a good beat to it.

You'd think with how much of a music fan/geek/analysist that I am, I'd know this. But I pretty much just put anything on that isn't too soft that I'd get sleepy or lazy, but not so hard that I couldn't concentrate.

I'm gonna stick with my (roughly) 1981-1996 old school period here, but these are some dancey/upbeat songs I'd probably go with:

Easy Lover - Phil Collins
Jump - Van Halen
any upbeat Paula Abdul, especially "Cold Hearted", "Vibeology" or "Straight Up"
Out of Touch - Hall and Oates
U Can't Touch This
The Sign - Ace of Base
Young Turks - Rod Stewart
Take On Me
Dancing on the Ceiling - Lionel Richie

Physical- Olivia Newton John...

and We Got The Beat by Go-go's.

"Over and Over" by Madonna on her "Like A Virgin" album is very good for cardio.

Girl, I think that the right music is essential to a good workout.  I need music that gets me moving.  Some of my favorites are:

Pump It - The Black Eyed Peas

Lay All Your Love on Me or Voulez Vous - ABBA
If - Janet Jackson

I always associate a lot of '80s music/early '90s as being fun exercise songs. Here are a few to get you up on your feet:

"Walking On Sunshine" Katrina and the Waves
"I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" Elton John
"My Perogative" Bobby Brown
"She Drives Me Crazy" Fine Young Cannibals

Most Michael Jackson Songs from that time.

No mention of Diana Ross's 'Work That Body'?

(Well, okay...it wasn't a big Stateside hit, but you can almost 'smell' the legwarmers and sweat from hearing it...er, if that's your thing!)

I used to customize aerobics mixtapes/CDs for a few clients when I lived in NC.  Most of the mixes ran in the 125-135 BPM (beats per minute) range, with songs such as the following:

"Twilight Zone" - 2 Unlimited
"Mr. Vain", "Got To Get It" - Culture Beat
"Shake Your Groove Thing" - Peaches & Herb
"Perculator" - Cajmere
"Move It Up" - Cappella
"Music Sounds Better With You" - Stardust
"Around The World" - Daft Punk (original mix is 122 BPM, sped up to at least 125)
"Temple Of Dreams" - Messiah
"Let's Get High" - Lords Of Acid
"I'm Gonna Get You" - Bizarre Inc.
"Another Night" (Club Mix) - Real McCoy

Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor

Lay You hands On Me - Bon Jovi

AC/DC Live  it's a great CD to workout to

That's wonderful, Erin!

When I was going to the gym and on the treadmill, I used U2's "The Best of 1980-1990) and usually programmed my CD player (yeah, I know) to repeat the faster paced songs.  "Angel of Harlem", "When Love Comes to Town" and "I Will Follow" were some of the most played, but I love the whole CD.

Keep it up, girlie. You know I'm doing the same thing right now. :)

I was listening to Duran Duran's Greatest Hits while playing on the elliptical.

thanks Jess...you too! :)

Duran Duran would be good to listen to. Anything upbeat, really. I have been doing these Leslie Sansone walk/jog/etc. aerobic tapes....and they are fun, and pretty easy too. She plays music in the background to allow you to keep up the pace and stuff. I even got her Pilates tape...it's kind of hard if you aren't used to it (that would be me)...but once your muscles get used to all of the different moves....you feel so good after doing that workout! :)

'Call on Me' by Eric Prydz

That music video was so popular, that it spawned an actual exercise workout DVD called 'Pump it Up!' where the dancers in the 'Call on Me' video perform workout routines to dance music ...
