Subject: Public information films/Public service announcements

Written By: Stompgal on 10/17/07 at 3:25 pm

Does anyone know any PIFs/PSAs from their childhood or recent years? Here are a few that I know:

Charley Says - a series of animated PIFs from the 1970s featuring a boy called Dominic and his cat Charley.
Frances the Firefly - a 'Fire Kills' animated PIF that warns children not to play with matches.
Joe and Petunia (1968 - 1973) - these cartoon PIFs include 'Coastguard' and 'Worn Tyres'. The coastguard film was digitally remastered and updated for the 21st century. It shows Petunia listening to an iPod and Joe wearing a Burberry cap instead of a knotted hankie. He also calls the coastguard on a mobile phone
TFL adverts with the slogan, "Don't die before you've lived." One advert shows a young girl being shattered as she is hit by a car and her future is also shattered. Her dream was to race in the London 2012 olympics.
An NHS 'Get unhooked' advert in which people are hooked by a fishing line whenever they need a cigarette (shown earlier this year).

If you remember any PIFs/PSAs, feel free to post the ones you've heard of.

I don't remember any on TV except the ones from School House Rock! Other than that, I remember old Disney Jiminy Cricket ones:  Play safe and so forth.  They always played them on a reel to reel projector during rainy day lunchtimes at school.  Also,a Disney safety film=
I especially liked the one where Goofy was the bad tempered driver whenever he got behind the wheel.

"Read the Road" all about the road markings.  I can still remember part of the lyrics.

Is there a solid line to stop at
or a give way line to p-a-u-s-e at?

More road safety featuring Jimmy Saville and "Clunk, click; every trip" for seatbelt wearing (before it became the law that you had to wear them)

"Dip, don't dazzle your headlights"

I've seen the earlier PIFs (Joe and Petunia, Charley Says) on YouTube and I've also seen the Charley Says adverts archived in TV shows, including 'It's Only TV, But I Like It,' a TV quiz show that was hosted by Jonathan Ross. As for the Frances the Firefly PIF, I may have seen it as a child.

Litterbug, Litterbug
shame on you
look at the terrible things you do
littering cluttering every place
my but it's disgraceful.

Litterbug, litterbug
where's your pride
making a mess of the countryside
spoiling and soiling each lovely view
shame oh shame on you.

It really makes one wonder
what kind of house you keep
where on every tour
the world is your personal garbage heap.

You thoughtless litterbug
litterbug don't you care?
People must follow
you everywhere
spoiling and soiling each
lovely view
Shame Oh! Shame On You!"

There was one Looney Tunes one about the danger of stoves, and Bugs would say "Keep those pot handles turned in"

I've seen a similar advert from the NHS where an index finger and a middle finger pose as a man's legs with a cigarette in between. The ash falling from the ciarette would represent impotence.

Another PIF I saw last week included one from 1977 called 'Apaches.' It's a grim 26-minute long film about the dangers of playing on farms and it was even shown in UK primary schools. I also saw one from 1979 called 'Play Safe' about the dangers of playing near pylons, power lines and substations. It also has animated segments featuring an owl and a robin.

In the 80s the Uk government ran a series of ads about the dangers of heroin.  "I could stop - if I wanted to"

At about the same time there were ads about AIDS "Don't die of ignorance"
