Subject: Vegas, baby!

Written By: AL-B Mk. III on 03/21/08 at 1:09 pm

Sunday I'm flying out to Las Vegas with my family, my little brother is finally getting married and they decided to do it in Vegas.

Not only that, but I just happened to score tickets for my family to see none other than Mr. Warmth himself, Don Rickles.

I'm stoked!  ;)

Way cool. The last time I was in Vegas (about 10 years ago), I won $300 in a slot machine (and bragging rights.  ;) :D ;D )

Good luck.

oooh  I always wanted to go there too.  Thought maybe we'd make it out there for our 5th anniversary and get remarried by Elvis, but alas we didn't get there.

Hope you have a great time and congratulations to your brother and his new Mrs.

That's amazing that you're seeing HIM in Vegas. Well, amazing to me, at least. I imagine he must more or less live there ....

I've only ever been to Las Vegas one time .... way  back in 1980 ..... and who did I see performing? Don Rickles.

I'd never heard of him before, but seem to remember he was quite amusing.  8)

Well, I'm back home now, and I'm trying to unwind a little.

Las Vegas was a lot of fun but it was also exhausting. Seems like all we did was walk. And walk. And walk and walk and walk. I'd give a king's ransom for a foot massage right about now.

We flew out of Lincoln on Sunday, I hadn't flown in a good 15 years and was slightly nervous (as I was the first time I got on a plane), but once we got in the air I remembered how cool flying is. The flight was only about 2 hours.

We stayed at the Circus Circus which, to be honest, left a lot to be desired. They've been blowing up all the old casinos on that side of the strip and it seems like the Circus Circus may very well be next in line. And if that is indeed the case then I say good riddance, to the point that if and when they do blow it up, I'm seriously thinking about flying out there just for the occasion.

Don Rickles was every bit as awesome as I expected him to be, and the showroom was much smaller that I had anticipated so that made it even better. Plus there was a terrific lounge singer who opened up for him (accompanied by a big band), and seeing a real Vegas lounge singer was on my "must do" list, so that killed two birds with one stone.

We also decided that we should have some form of bachelor party for my brother, so he, my older brother, my dad and I went to a burlesque show at the Flamingo, and it was great. The showgirls were hot!  8)

In the meantime we all broke off and did a lot of exploring, which involved a lot of walking. The Strip is intentionally designed to keep you moving (there's no park benches on the Strip) so once you get tired of walking the only place to sit down is inside a casino in front of either a slot machine or bar. And the casinos are so extravagantly designed that it's easy to end up exploring them for hours on end.

The wedding ceremony was much more beautiful and tasteful than I had expected, and although the minister seemed a little bit "slick" in a Vegas sort of way he was also very articulate and moving and my brother started to choke up a little during the vows.  Afterward we all went to the Bellagio for a buffet which was incredible.

We have a cousin who lives in California, and although she couldn't make it her husband was in town on business and he came to the wedding. Later on that night he invited a bunch of us to an Irish pub inside the New York New York where an Irish folk/rock band was playing and we all had a great time.

Wednesday night we went to Fremont Street, where the old "classic" Vegas casinos are located. To compete with the growing "megacasinos" on the Strip, the old downtown casinos all got together, closed the streets off to traffic, and built a huge arched big screen television that spans the whole area (about 2 blocks long) which has this extravagant light show every hour after dark, called the "Fremont Street Experience." This was hugely successful, since Fremont Street has remained a "must see" for the tourists and was packed when we were there.

All in all it was a good time, if a bit hectic.

sounds like the trip was great Al. Glad to hear you had a good time and you did a lot of stuff. lounge singer, Rickles, Burlesque, Buffett, Wedding, Casinos action, Irish Pub, wow, you did Las Vegas up right! welcome back  and I know what you mean about "good riddance" to Circus Circus, it looks run down and old compared to all the newer ones but the price was probably decent.

You guys should've stayed at the Luxor, that place is awesome :D :D

And you should've taken the monorails around too!

Circus Circus does suck :P  Excalibur's Midway is much better for the kiddies.
