Never actually been to Philadelphia, although I rode thru on a bus on my way to Atlantic City (gambling) about 17 years ago.
I think alot of the sites wouldn't really interest a foreigner as much as an American... they have one of the key documents of American freedom (A draft of the original Constitution is on permanent display at Independence Hall). 

The Philadelphia Museum of art has good reviews - http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/review/11322127  For us movie buffs, I *think* the stairs (there has to be some 30 or more stairs leading up to the museum) were the same stairs that Rocky ran up while training in the first Rocky movie, there used to be a Rocky statue at the top of the stairs, but I think they took it down.

You know what motivates me is food, so while in Philadelphia, you have to have a cheesesteak.  The city is famous for them.  The debate about which restaurant has the best one has been going since the beginning of time.  There is actual cheesesteak ordering etiquette as written about in wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak#Cultural_etiquette  I don't know how strict they are, but at least at a famous place called "Pat's" in south Philadelphia, at least on one television program I saw, the owner was really quite rude to the first time customer because he didn't order it using the local language.  ::)    I think if I ever get to Philly, I'm gonna skip Pat's and go somewhere else.  I hate rude people.

You can take a ferry from Philadelphia to Camden, New Jersey to go to the Adventure Aquarium.  It seems nice, they even have a program for extra money where you can swim with the sharks (it being New Jersey, that is done quite a bit with the Mob influence.  ;)  ;D)

We are thinking of going to Philly sometime.  No idea what is there but it made some top ten list of cities to visit in the US according to a friend.

You need to go to Philly and have an authentic Cheese Steak sub.  Philly is known for them.

One thing I also wanted to mention, is about 40 miles west of Philadelphia, there is a town called Hershey (named after the man that created the candy), and they have a pretty nice amusement park and zoo there. http://www.hersheypark.com/index.php

Weren't we talking about having a inthe00s reunion in Philly at one time?  As with most real life meetings, I don't think it ever really got off the ground.  :(

Philadelphia is the home of Will Smith.  You could visit some locations as seen in the opening credits of 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'

and say hi to M. Night Shmaliyan (the director of Six Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the water, and the new one I forget the name of.)  He's from the suburbs of Philly and most of his movies take place around there too.

You have to visit Philadelphia to see the Philadelphia Museum of Art, also the Rodin museum on the road leading up to the PMA. Visit the home made food and crafts market in the centre of town near the Marriott hotels. Lots of the stalls are run by the Amish farmers, it is just so interesting to meet them. Their home made foods are just delicious especially the rice pudding.
Also there is a snack bar in the same market selling something called a Hoagie, a type of sandwich made with crusty bread and filled with fried chicken or whatever you like and very tasty. The crafts are beautiful aswell, and what a great place to people watch. Check the Mutter museum too if you can.

I live about 40 minutes southwest of Philly and I cannot think of a single reason why you should visit  ;D

What about Deleware Gis?  Deleware is pretty nice.  I know it'll be March but if you need a break Deleware beaches are lovely.  I always like to sit on the beach when there's no tourist and just enjoy the ocean.  Depending on the weather I'd wear a light jacket. :)

I'm ashamed to say about 20 years ago now.  :-[  I left San Fransisco and there was an earthquake!  ;D
Seriously my poor parents were going frantic. We went to New Jersey and the day we left a hurricane hit where we stayed.

I was backpacking around America with my best friend, we had planned to stay in Los Angeles but met a guy in Seattle who invited us to San Fransisco, we had a week spare and decided to go! I am so glad we did, it was my favourite place of the whole tour! I would love to come back one day.  :)

The best place to have lunch really depends on your agenda. The problem with the steak shops mentioned is their
lack of indoor seating. Center City has excellent retaurants and pubs, it also has The Gallery, which is nothing more
than a mall but it also has some good eateries.

I was just informed by The Boy that Tony Luke's has added indoor seating. It's been awhile since I've been there,
since The Boy drives, I just send him.  ;D

the old fashioned soda fountain place i think your talking about is niffty 50's and if so yes it great there, they have great food and is very good price with every thing.
and a few thing that i think would be cool for you to see is the bell, and independence hall, also a very cheap fun way to see most of the cool thing in philly they have a horse and carriage, i think its about $20.00 for an hour ride? not to sure on that but i will look at it this week when i go to the city.

Hey there! I will definitely be there for the meet! I used to go to college in Philly. If you love art, the art museums are awesome! There's one where you can see the insides of animals ha ha. There's also a lo of beautiful murals all over! :]

Ok so i checked out the site Tim recommended for places to eat and i liked the look of those listed below. I was trying to find something that wouldn't be too expensive, would fit us all and would give a fair range of food so no one feels stuck having to eat a food style they hate.

Ok, I am looking at a hotel in New Joisey.  It's not far from Liberty Bell which is what I'm basing my search on.  :)

just an update for everyone involved:

Beth and I booked our hotel room. We are staying at the Hampton right in the middle of the city.  I mentioned about the Reading Terminal Market (http://www.gophila.com/C/Philly_Favorites/380/U/Reading_Terminal_Market/499.html)...it looks pretty fun. I think Beth and I are gonna hit that on Sunday morning (it opens at 9 am)...and we are gonna eat lunch on Sunday in Chinatown (which looks really cool). Are we having our inthe00s' meet on Saturday for lunch or dinner? Are we gonna split up into groups or go as one whole group, etc?

Right we need to get some stuff firmly planned!

We all seem happy with Campos so we need to figure out whether we are doing lunch or dinner........

my sister Beth will be there...she's only 21. :)

I'm thinking we can talk to the concierge at our hotel about resturants that can accomodate our large group, and then call for reservations once we're in town.  It can be difficult to plan such things when we're all so far away.  Just a thought anyway.

So just to clairfy, we are all meeting on Saturday for lunch at Campos Deli.  That is close to the Liberty Bell area.  We can all wander that area, and then later, we can also have dinner together at another resturant, tbd.

Sunday, those who will still be in town, will do more sightseeing, possibly on the Red Bus?

that sounds like a great plan Tam...I also like Ash's suggestion about meeting for lunch (discussing plans)..and then meeting again later for dinner...that sounds awesome! I know that I am a night owl...and I'm sure a lot of you are as well. I would love to wander around and discover places that are open later too. Beth and I were thinking of maybe hitting that big market on Sunday morning...and maybe doing Chinatown for luch...does that sound cool w/anyone?
