Subject: Cornrows ... HELP!

Written By: Tam on 07/17/08 at 12:39 pm

I don't know how much help I am going to get, but here is the problem:

I relaxed The Son's hair, for the first time, last week.
Since it was the first time, I bought "Just for me" without lye and such, and it worked out just fine!
So now, he keeps coconut oil in his hair, and of course a durag on while in the house, to promote waves.

He wants cornrows.

I know how to french braid, and I have read and pretty much gotten the gist of how to do cornrows, so my question is this:

How long does his hair have to be in order for the cornrows to go in without my fingers cramping and dropping pieces of hair?
His hair is about an inch and a half right now, and I was using a weightless wax, but his hair just didn't seem long enough for me to work with.

Any help/ideas anyone can offer would be so completely appreciated!

Thanks all!

hey Tam...

I just started dreds of my own....they are a pain in the ass.  >:(

By cornrows assume you're talking about the style Xibit or Allen Iverson sport... close to the scalp braids

I don't know if you can do those with relaxed hair.  Because when the hair is relaxed it's hard get it to stay in the braids.

That's exactly what I am thinking about Girl!

I have basically decided that he is just going to have to deal with it not being straight as a pin, and he will just have to wear his durag more times than not! Especially at home because I definitely do not want that coconut oil getting all over the furniture and stuff! (Yes, The Son lays around an awful lot) ;)

Thanks Girls!
I had looked at both of those, and I do have the gist of how to do it, but with his hair being straight.... I think I am pretty much screwed!!! ;D

Karma to everyone!

Yeah.  Corn rows are a way to get around relaxing.

lol....in the 80s I had a Jheri Curl... you know the scene from Coming to America when the family gets up and there is a stain on the couch where everyone's head rested against the back of the couch? That was my house....all because of me. On the back of the couch, on the arm of the couch, on the car's headrests, all of my pillows..... it was disgusting.    ;D

and just for fun I thought I would include this little gem  Soul Glo
