Subject: What song/songs do you want played at your own funeral?

Written By: Badfinger-fan on 07/18/08 at 12:11 am

Strange as it may seem, I get enthused trying to arrange songs for my day. Anyways, everyone of us will die & there will probably be a funeral service with family and friends to celebrate your life & people's memories of you.  Some funerals have slide shows with music accompaniment. Lady Di was asked to sing Ava Maria at a funeral service a couple of years ago.
So what music would you want them to hear?

I think I'd like a hymn or 2, but mostly songs from movie soundtracks and a slide show with pictures on a big screen of me and Diane & Julie, and the rest of family and friends that were dear to me. I would like Cast Away composed by Alan Silvestri, it's very soothing and beautiful.
I'd like May It Be - Enya, and then for my many years of playing softball, perhaps a sound bite from The Natural composed by Randy Newman and I think I'd like it to end with the theme from The Lord Of The Rings, The Fellowship Of The Ring

I just noticed there isn't any Classic Rock... I need to rethink this  8)

Let's see.....

Some potential ones I'm thinking of:

1. Melanie- Weird Al
2. Hairspray Queen- Nirvana
3. Moving Out- Aerosmith
4. For All The Cows- Foo Fighters
5. Wet My Bed- Stone Temple Pilots

Most of these don't make any sense(Moving Out would be the closest to making sense), but wouldn't it be ammusing to play some of these at the surprise of the everyone there?

Beth Neilson Chapman - Say Goodnight Not Goodbye

Say goodnight, not goodbye
You will never leave my heart behind
Like the path of a star
I'll be anywhere you are
In the spark that lies beneath the coals
In the secret place inside your soul
Keep my light, in your eyes
Say goodnight, not goodbye
Don't you fear, when you dream
Waking up is never what it seems
Like a jewel, burried deep
Like a promise meant to keep
You are everything you want to be
So just let your heart reach out to me
Keep my light, in your eyes
Say goodnight, not goodbye

Say goodnight, not goodbye

I will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Remember the good times that we had?
I let them slip away from us when things got bad
How clearly I first saw you smilin in the sun
Wanna feel your warmth upon me, I wanna be the one

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Im so tired but I cant sleep
Standin on the edge of something much too deep
Its funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we cant be heard

But I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Im so afraid to love you, but more afraid to loose
Clinging to a past that doesnt let me choose
Once there was a darkness, deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Dont let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories
Weep not for the memories

As I read through these I find some interesting choices in songs. Some Happy, some sad, some a
little of both. As for me, I don't plan on having a funeral. No obituary, no service, nothing, I just want
to fade away. If I did have a funeral, the only song I would want to be play will be...

I'm not sure whether to make it a happy or sad day... I'm kinda feeling like "hey, I'm gone, but nothing is lost", while I'm sure my family and friends (or what's left of it by then) will be sad.

Still... I definitely want this one to be played (or sung). (There's probably better versions of it, btw.) It's very special to me, as this was the first work I learned entirely when I joined the choir I'm singing in.

"Beautiful World" - DEVO
"Dare to be Stupid - Weird Al Yankovic

...either of which could qualify as guiding principles of my life.

"Highway To Hell" -  I don't want anything soppy. It makes me uncomfortable in real life, so I'd prefer my funeral to be lighthearted  :)

I'll split the difference with ya.  I don't want to freak out any fundies, but I'd like it to be known that if I went to hell in the proverbial bucket, at least I was enjoying the ride.

"Hell in a Bucket" - Grateful Dead

Should I meet my demise while doing something sufficiently stupid to earn an Darwin Award, I also have standing orders with friends to make sure that "Adventures in Failure" (MC 900 Foot Jesus) is played, and I've updated that request to include an accompanying slideshow of appropriately-styled "FAIL" pictures from the Intarwebs.

Bottom line:  If there's no drinking, carousing, dancing, and most importantly, laughing, it's not a proper wake.  No matter what the funeral hall guy says, funerals aren't for the living, funerals are for the dead.  Wakes, on the other hand, are for the living.

I don't want to be any more expense to anyone after I'm dead.  I don't want a funeral, don't want buried in a casket, don't want cremated.  So I guess that leaves donating my body to science or the body farm.  That would be kinda cool, to help someone even after I'm gone.

If they have a wake in rememberence...well just play something that everyone likes.  I'm not gonna be there anyways, so what do I care?

I don't want a funeral; not that it matters 'cuz I'll be dead and won't have much say in that decision...

I hope they have a party for me.  And someone finds that CD I labeled DMID.  Onnit will be a remix of L.A.Style's "James Brown Is Dead", but remixed by yours truly so that the song states "DJ Midas Is Dead".  BOMP BOMP BOMP DA-NA-NA...Everyone will be sad on the inside due to my demise yet dancing happily hopefully with glowsticks because it sounds like a happy song is playing and they should dance to it and the light show looks nifty.
