Subject: If you could bring a dead rock star back to life

Written By: Mudbug on 07/22/08 at 4:15 pm

If you could bring a dead rock star back to life for one gig, who would it be?

John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Buddy Holly, Freddie Mercury? Or someone else?

This Day in Music are carrying out a world-wide survey to see which dead rock stars people would want to see again - for one night only!

Who would you pick? You can see a full list and vote on

this is a extremely tough decision.  Having the power to raise one from the dead and hear them perform once more...hmmmm, this is tough. there are so many

these all would be considered
Ronnie Van Zant - Lynryd Skynrd
Jim Morrison - The Doors
Freddie Mercury - Queen
Jimi Hendrix
Janis Joplin

but I'm gonna go with my heart on this one...  Lazarus....Come Forth!!

Pete Ham & Tom Evans and Mike Gibbins of Badfinger
if they could rejoin the lone surviving member Joey Molland for one night and I could do it, then that's my choice. if i was forced to pick one star only, it would be Jimi Hendrix  8)

john bonham is a tempting guy to say i wish he hadnt died so zeppelin could have made more albums in the 80s (which isnt the same as bringing him back to life) but then i got the sinking feeling zeppelin might have jumped the shark in the 80s.

Huh. did you know Falco was dead?

Falco died in a car crash about seven years ago!

I'd say Mingus mellow fantastic was a jazz star rather than a rock star, and I wouldn't  know how to bring back first, Charlie Parker or Scott Joplin!

I'd bring Ian Curtis back to life, but he wouldn't be interested.

If I could only bring ONE rock star back to life, it would be John Lennon, no question about it.

Bringing the 1956 Elvis back to life sounds cool, but the 1976 Elvis might be a little scary!

David Crosby, oh shoot that dude's still alive.  He mostly sits on the back porch and stares into space, you just have to water him every coupla days!

Ron Tabak of Prism.  He wasn't a well-known name outside of Canada, but here in his homeland, he is/was legendary.  He had a great voice, and was on the verge of a reunion with Prism when he died in 1984

He sang glam rock (Spaceship Superstar), hard rock (Armageddon), ballads (Night to Remember), and even pop songs (Young and Restless) and did it all flawlessly.  Some samples ...

Not a rock star but I'd love to bring back Lisa Lopes...Left Eye of TLC....and then someone had best get me front row tix for the reunion concert.

Also maybe, since I have a dozen pics of her on my wall....Billie Holliday...but only if she could be free of the mental anguish and drug addiction that killed her. Although that's kinda what made her good to begin with...  :-\\

Lennon

I am not surprised my your answer.  ;)

There are so many-too many but I think I would have to say the ones who (IMO) died when they shouldn't have-like John Lennon, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bobber, Jim Croce, Pasty Cline (ok, so she isn't a rock star), Selina, etc. Some may say that Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, & Keith Moon but they died by their own stupidity-if you ask me.

Personal favs not on the above list would be George Harrison, Freddie Mercury (though some may say that he died because of his own stupidity, too), & Cass Eliot.

see, here's the thing. if hendrix had lived (and that's so different from saying 'who would we bring back to life,' i demand that we get some umpire rules on that -- are we talking about if they suddenly came back today, or are we talking about if they had continued their historical career into subsequent musical trends and movements?), he would have been playing sick blues style pentatonic rock crunch pedal guitar (note that if the wah comes in, the univox goes out, gnome sayng? that's jimi's style, pulling the crunch pedals in and out one at a time) when the style went over to more classical influence, and multi-effect guitar (where you have the multieffects unit and the different patches for different parts of the song, five or six effects and settings can come in and out at once, but you have to plan it all out ahead of time). i wonder how jimi would have rode that wave. would he have been cutting heads old school against steve vai? doing guest walkons with van halen? or just kept doing his thing and gotten crazy popular with the biker crowd? i dunno, but 70s and 80s jimi, one wonders. one does wonder.

that's actually a good point.  There is a difference between bringing someone back from the dead and someone not dying.  I mean if Buddy Holly had lived his music would have changed over the years but if he came back now would we listen to the sound music and find it good or dated....

okay I would listen to it... so maybe buddy holly was a bad example but you know what I mean... I mean what Tia means

they should just show kids a picture of him and say this is what smoking and drinking does to your face kids, it'd work better than any 'just say no' campaign!
