Subject: Name my new pet!

Written By: Jessica on 01/04/09 at 10:11 pm

I'm not telling you anything about this new pet, except I have to feed it once a week and it stays in my refrigerator.

So because I'm weird and insane and all that, start tossing names out.  Once I get enough names, I'll do a poll for everyone to vote on a name.  Once that is over and the pet has a moniker, then I'll take a picture of said pet.  The winner will get a piece of this pet (although God knows how I'll ship it) and the satisfaction of knowing the name they suggested was used. :D

This is, of course, assuming the pet lives until tomorrow.  Right now I have the pet in a glass bowl in the oven with the oven light on and covered in Saran wrap, hoping it makes it to noon tomorrow.

And I just realized I posted this on the wrong board.  F**k.

Ah well, I'm sure a mod can move it for me tomorrow.

I don't know of any pet that stays in the refrigerator except a frozen food or something like that.

Scratch that.  Midas just gave me the most perfect name EVAH for my new pet.  Sorry guys, but he totally hit the nail on the head with this one.  Mahahahaahahahahaha.

Meet Seymour, the sourdough sponge:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o283/Nerdprincess1980/seymour.jpg

I wasn't lying when I said I do have to keep this in my refrigerator and feed it once a week (he eats flour and water).  He was also growing up in my oven last night.  In a few weeks or so he should be ripe enough that I can take a bit off of him and make a loaf of sourdough bread.

I was going to name it Audrey II, but I thought Seymour fit it so much better.

Here's more about pre-fermenting and sourdough sponge (starter):

Nonetheless, you guys were effin' hysterical with your guesses and suggestions.  So, karma to all that commented. :D

Ick, not by itself.  Eventually I'll take a cup or so of Seymour and put him in a bread mix and make sourdough bread.  He has to grow some more though and kill off all the bad smelling bacteria.

Wow I was WAY off - I guess I watch too many nature shows since I just saw one where lab people (love that technical term gift I have) put FROGS in fridges set at a strict cold temperature, notice I can't remember so I filled in with jargan.  They were teaching how frogs survive winter and actually thaw out!  Just like Mom used to make!!! 8-P

Anyhow, I would have suggested Michigan J. if I would have been right, but somehow, it just don't fit a sponge.  Probably since I've never seen or heard a sponge sing "Hello My Baby...".

Unless I misssed that episode of Spongebob - which is highly unlikely since my 3 ESS think there is NO other channel!

Dang, missed it this time, but gave it the ol' college try!  Should have probably finished that, maybe I'd get things right more often! :D

you revealed what it was before I could give you my suggestion.  I thought it was going to be a sour-dough starter so something 'yeasty' would be appropriate.

How about Candida for your next pet.

Does it really take that long?  I assumed you were onto your fourth or fifth loaf by now!

I was thinking of making some but, with this sort of time-scale, Dai would have cleared it out of the fridge before it was ready.

The bread itself doesn't take long to make.  However, the starter for it is a bit tempermental.  The recipe I have for it says you should keep the starter alive in your fridge for a couple of months (to kill off nasty bacteria and help promote good bacteria) before you attempt to make any sourdough bread.  It also states that if it is extremely cold outside, to wait until it warms up.  Something to do with bread rising and all that.

Last time I made bread properly (i.e. not using my bread machine) I put the oven lamp on and put it in there to rise.  It just heats the space up a little without starting the cooking process.
