Subject: San Nin Faai Lok/Happy New Year

Written By: Jessica on 01/25/09 at 5:40 pm

Tomorrow is the start of the Chinese/Lunar New Year, so gung hei faat coi. :)

We went to Chinatown today (after I had to badger Rice Cube....Mr. "I'm not interested in my culture" :P) to get special foodstuffs and decorations for the coming days (the celebration lasts about 15 days), so tonight I'll be cooking up a storm.  I'll take some pictures of the decorations I bought later on.

Hahahaa, after last night, I think I'll refrain from booze for a week or two. ;D

I did, however, buy some rice wine today.  It's for the dish I'm making AND for the offerings to my Kitchen God altar.

So here are some pictures of the decorations I bought.  I bought them neutral (no identifying which year it is) so I can use them each year, cause I'm cheap like that. :P

Rice is going to have to tell you what all these mean later, or else I'm going to have to ask his mom, because he is so ig'nant of his culture (which I find fascinating...dunno what his problem is ;D)

And this is my Kitchen God altar that I put together.  The characters read "Reserve Fortune Kitchen God", which I guess translates to keep the fortunes of this house here.  The three tiny cups are filled with rice wine (to get the Kitchen God a little tipsy).  The incense and joss sticks (the red things) are a sort of spiritual food for him, and the tangerines are a sweet offering.

We have some friends from China that invited us over last night for a little New Year's celebration.  They made the best freaking dinner EVER!  :D
