Subject: Favourite children's book authors/illustrators?

Written By: Stompgal on 02/27/09 at 4:13 pm

Are there any childhood authors or illustrators who you remember fondly? Here are a few of my favourites:

Authors:

Roald Dahl - popular children's author of books such as 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' 'James and the Giant Peach,' 'Matilda' and 'The BFG.'
Enid Blyton - author of book series such as 'The Famous Five,' 'The Secret Seven,' 'Malory Towers' and 'Amelia Jane.'
Roger Hargreaves - author and illustrator of the Mr Men and Little Miss series
Jacqueline Wilson - author of books such as 'The Story of Tracy Beaker,' 'Bad Girls,' 'The Illustrated Mum' and 'Double Act.'
JK Rowling - author of the bestselling Harry Potter series
Beatrix Potter -  her books feature charming animal characters including Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddle Duck
Lauren Child - best known for writing and illustrating the 'Charlie and Lola' and 'Clarice Bean' series.

Illustrators

Nick Sharratt - his illustrations often appear in the Jacqueline Wilson books
Stephen Cartwright - his instantly recognisable illustrations have appeared in many books published by Usborne such as the 'First Thousand Words' and 'Farmyard Tales' series.
Quentin Blake - his pictures are featured in Roald Dahl's books
Tony Ross - his illustrations have appeared in the Horrid Henry books as well as his own Little Princess series

I always loved Beverley Cleary books especially Runaway Ralph and The Mouse and the Motorcycle.  Judy Blume books were OK too.

I think I read practically every Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume books I could find when I was a kid. I still have some of my old books and I love looking through them every once in a while.

Also loved -

Roald Dahl ("The Witches" was my favorite)
Laura Ingalls Wilder
E.B. White
Natalie Babbitt
George Selden ("The Cricket In Times Square")

And a bunch more I can't remember at the moment.

I still have the copy of "Don't Be My Valentine" that Syd Hoff autographed for me when I was 8 years old (he illustrated the book but the book was authored by someone else). Syd Hoff was best known for writing and illustrating books like "Danny and the Dinosaur" and "Sammy the Seal", among many others.

When I was young I really liked Enid Blyton's stories (yes...the unabridged versions with Dick and Fanny and company  :o)...
I especially liked Secret Seven, Famous Five and the Faraway Tree series

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.....wonderful book! My first grade teacher read that book to us one day.

Also, I just remembered "Miss Nelson is Missing" by Harry Allard and James Marshall. My second grade teacher read that to us one day. After that, there would be a mad stampede to the book section on library day to check out that book.  ::)  ;D I bought my own copy of the book many years later.  :)

I'm doing a part tine course in children's literature at the moment and another children's author and illustrator I like is Shirley Hughes. My favourite books of hers are Dogger and the Alfie series.

Etc, etc. I think I have the whole collection (13 total-but I may be missing one or two). I LOVE these books. I first discovered them in 3rd grade when our classroom library had "A School For Cats". It was in that book that I was introduced to Jenny Linsky. I loved the book so much that I stole it from the classroom. Yup, that's right. I stole the book.  :o :o :o But, I discovered that there were more Jenny books out there. I lost the original book that I stole but I have replaced it. A few years ago, I was determined to get all the Jenny books into my own personal library. It worked out well because that was the time when they were re-releasing them. Otherwise, I would have had to pay boocoo bucks for the out-of-print ones.
