Subject: UK's oldest man Henry Allingham is 113

Written By: Philip Eno on 06/06/09 at 7:03 am

From BBC News Online

The UK's oldest man and one of Britain's two surviving WWI veterans has turned 113.

Henry Allingham joined the Royal Navy Air Service in September 1915 before transferring to the RAF in April 1918.

The Royal Navy will host a birthday party on HMS President in London for his family, close friends and members of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Mr Allingham lives at St Dunstan's centre for blind ex-service personnel in Ovingdean, near Brighton.

He was born in Clapham, south London, but later moved to Sussex, staying in his Eastbourne home until the age of 110.

Most of Mr Allingham's family now live in the USA, and he has one great-great-great-grandchild.

Commemorative cake

Rear Admiral Simon Charlier, the head of the Fleet Air Arm, the modern descendant of the Royal Naval Air Service in which Mr Allingham served, will be the senior serving military officer attending.

To commemorate the occasion, a birthday cake and card signed by the First Sea Lord will be delivered to the boat by Royal Marines.

A decanter of Pussers Rum, Mr Allingham's favourite tipple, will be presented on behalf of the Fleet Air Arm by Rear Admiral Charlier.

In the past year Mr Allingham has been given a doctorate in engineering from Southampton Solent University, been made an honorary freeman of Brighton and Hove and become the "oldest scout".

In March, he was made an honorary member of the Royal Naval Association and also received an upgraded Legion d'Honneur in London, six years after receiving his first one.

Mr Allingham, the last surviving founder member of the RAF, has also published his life story.

He became Britain's oldest man when he reached 112 years and 296 days, surpassing Welshman John Evans who died in 1990.

Gosh, I wonder what it's like to live that long. The stories he must be able to tell. That is truly amazing.

Man, 113.  That's quite a long life.  Congrats to him for outlasting most :)
I dunno if I'd wanna live that long.  It would be hard to enjoy life at that age knowing that any day could be your last :\'(
