Subject: How old were you when you had your first drink?
Written By: snozberries on 08/06/09 at 3:31 pm
I was 14 a freshman in High School.
I went to my first (and last football game- I HATE football) and while there two of my classmates and I decided we were bored.
I lived about a mile from where the game was being played so we walked back to my place and raided the liquor cabinet. I got WASTED!
My parents were pissed but they were glad I tried it at home. I was pretty much a lush after that. Getting drunk all the time cuz I thought it was fun. That was 1982 it took me 14 years to beat the addiction.
Worst thing about having an alcohol habit in 80s? I had a waterbed..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/Kathleen727/Welcome%20Sigs/Smileys/NauseousSmiley.gif

I was in fifth grade. I got into a bottle of port that my parents had in the basement. Went to school drunk. Needless to say Mom worked at the school and kept asking me why I was acting so weird. (more than usual)

Growing up in a half-Jewish household, we had Manischewitz wine with all our celebrations (sader dinners, etc.) I thought that was the only kind of wine there was so I used to hate wine. Who knows how old I was when I first had a sip. Then I discovered a thing call white wine. :D :D ;D ;D I remember we had a bottle when I was about 11 or so. I had a glass or two and felt the effects.
My first REAL drink was when I was 13. My sisters were having a party and they gave me one-a screwdriver. The guy who made it for me (my sister's boyfriend at the time), "slipped" accidentally on purpose with the vodka. I got pretty wasted on that one drink (yeah, I was a cheap date-still am. :D ;D ;D ;D ) Some time that night, I went up to the bathroom and got sick. 8-P

Actually, its hard to say. I got sips of dad's beer like around ten or so, and wine at holiday meals. I guess I was about 12, spending the summer in Puerto Rico at my grandma's house with my cousin. We often went trolling for chicks (never found any) but went to pool halls. Paid 10 C for a shot, 5 C for a cig, and 25 C for a game of pool. No one asked for ID. Those were the days my friend...

We never had alcohol in the house (Mum and Dad just didn't drink). So, I would have sneaked my first taste at my sisters wedding which, because the reception was held at our house, I had some opportunity to get my hands on some champagne. I remember finishing off many of the half filled glasses left on the tables...I was 14.
I may have 'borrowed' a bottle of altar wine a couple of years earlier (I was an altar boy) .... but my accomplice and I took one swig each and spat it out and dumped the bottle! (so going to hell for that one)!
But my first real drinking came when I was 17 and had far too much rum at a party. I started throwing up at the party and didn't stop until midday (the following day). Never touched rum again....

Eeesh, hard to say. I am Italian. If I had lived in Italy, I would have had my first drink of wine when i was about 2, but in Canada, gosh...I might have been less than 10 years old before my first glass of wine, given to me by my parents.

Well, I first got a sip when I was four. LOL. Now I wasn't stumbling drunk or anything. I remember, I had gotten my hand jammed in my mom's bedroom door and was bawling and my mom picked me up and carreed me into the kitchen and sat me on the table, when she had been drinking a Coors Light and reading the paper. After she made sure I was alrigjt--she went to her room for something. I noticed the can just sitting there. I didnt know what beer was, just that my parent's drank it occasionally, and I wasn;t allowed to have it. I looked around, grabbed the can and took a swig.
And spit it all over the kitchen. 8-P I don't know why a person would want to drink a beer, because it's nasty to me. I haven't touched a beer since! 8-P Yuck man
I had my first real drink when I was 21 at the State Fair. I had a margarita. And it was way strong. I think I'll still to HI-C Fruit Punch. LOL. :)

I can't recall exactly. I probably had sips of beer/ shandy (half beer half lemonade) at parties from quite a young age. I do remember being about 8 or 9 and having some banana liquer. My grandma gave me a little glass of it.
Properly going out and drinking in the evening from the age of 15.

drinking it through a straw is better than drinking it from the can.

I recall having a taste of beer at 15. Didn't care for it much. At 17 I was with some friends who had beer (which I didn't drink) and amaretto and Coke - It kinda tasted like Cherry Coke. I liked that.
Senior year in high school I was drinking just about every weekend. I don't drink that much now but when I do I usually prefer something that tastes good over having a beer.

I don't know how old I was when I had my first drink, but I can remember taking little sips out of my parents drinks all the time when I was a kid. My dad would have me make his drinks for him - either a whiskey sour or scotch and soda. I've had more than enough of both for one lifetime! When I was in junior high, my friends and I used to raid our parents liquor cabinets and get sloppy drunk all the time. Geesh! Now I like to have beer or wine on occasion, but I definitely know my limits!

My mother would drink twice a year, at the Little League and Midget Football league banquets. Though she would never
drink a full glass because at the ripe age of 7 I would take sips of her Tom Collins. I guess you could say that was the start
of a nonproductive drinking career. It wasn't until I was 16 that I was drinking for the love of it and boy did I love it. That
love affair ended 3,274 days ago, and though I do sometimes miss the taste I do not miss the feeling nor the lack of funds.

Ha! I can beat the lot of you.
I was 3 and my mother was at a sherry morning. Every time the hostess came round my mother's glass was empty and the woman thought my mum had a drink problem, but it was me sneaking it from under the table, apparently I slept for the rest of the day.......... ;D
When we went to Germany we used to drink 'brown beer' on special occasions, a watered down beer the children could drink.

I remember when I was 3 or 4, I grabbed a cup, thinking it was just Coca-Cola from my parents' friends' picnic table and started taking a few sips before having it whisked out of my hands and being scolded with, "That's booze." When I was 5 or 6, I remember taking sips from my mother's wine glass. And the first drink I remember having was when I was 8, which was a little bit of Creme de Menthe with ice. Yum.

Ha ha, reminds me of me. My dad was a fan of home brew (not sure why, it tasted quite vile too me) but I was accidentally given too much beer at the age of 3 and was told I kicked the pet dog in the air as a result. I 'knowingly' got drunk comparatively late at the age of 19. I didn't want to but my brother-in-law gave me a bottle of cheap cider so I could experience it. I see getting drunk as an occupational hazard.
LOL. :)
Margarita's are lovely.
I have recently realised that I can handle my spirits but not beer. I think it is the gassiness in lager that makes me feel ill. I don't drink ale or bitter because it tastes awful.

Don't know about that, have you ever tasted sherry? Some of it's OK but some of it's awful. It's a fortified wine, normally about 14% alcohol by volume; In the UK it's stereotyped as an old ladies' drink, or something most people only drink at Xmas. If you're planning to try it, try a "Fino", a dry white type; most of the red types are pretty syrupy and taste like fermented raisins 8-P

I was a late bloomer - I tried sips of dads beer when 3 or 4, and some Christmas wine... but that is all I remember. I did not try a drink drink till I was 18 and first year in college. I love most drinks, just depends on what I am in the mood for (wine, beer, liquor, mixed) - I have a deep love for dirty martinis, and long island iced teas. But I am also fond of a margarita (regular on the rocks), vodka collins, jack and coke, bloody mary.... Yep I do not believe in discrimination - I do not want any of my liquors to feel slighted ;)

9 years since my last drink and this still makes me cringe. I don't tell people what to drink or what to mix but Jack Daniels is not
for mixing, you're better off with a house bourbon it's cheaper. Jack Daniels is not a bourbon but you won't notice when mixed
with coke. When I was bartending I told patrons that Jack Daniels is a Tennessee Whiskey that is meant to be sipped --- no ice
and especially no coke. If they insisted, I would make it but I didn't like it.

I had sips of dad's beer when I was 6 or 7, plus sips of champagne at various family weddings throughout my childhood. I think I started drinking wine coolers when I was around 14, and graduated to fuzzy navels and strawberry daquris the next year. Funnily enough, I really didn't drink all that much after I turned 21, maybe occasionally, but not like I did when I was a teen. I don't drink at all now since I take insulin. I kinda miss the fruity drinks (but not really the taste of alcohol), maybe I should stick to fruit smoothies and such. lol

Maybe because they don't want to drink or sip it fast.

I was taught that - no ice, maybe water (and yes no coke) by my forestry Professor ("Doc" is the one, that corrupted me my freshman year - he was 70 years old and looked like Samuel Clemmons - God rest his soul, I loved that man). And I do enjoy Jack that way - but I still really like it with coke. Sorry :\'( Forgive me Doc

To each their own I guess. Have you ever tried Evan Williams? It's a Kentucky Bourbon similar to Jack Daniels and probably better
suited for mixing.
Jack Daniels was my downfall, I liked it way too much as well as other whiskeys. Oh well, if I ever get diagnosed with a terminal
disease the first thing I'm doing is buying a bottle Of Gentleman Jack and a bottle Of Glenlivet, a single malt Scotch whiskey. If
I am going to die as might as well die happy. :)

I am wanting to try Templeton Rye, it is made here in Iowa - and I have heard it is good (can't wait to go find some - whenever that is) - I want to take the plant tour!

Used to take sips of my dad's beer when I was younger. Didn't really start drinking a lot until I was 14 or so.

I remember being a 6 or 7 and taking a sip of a Coors can sitting on the floor. I remember it tasted like tin. However the closest thing I can consider my first drink was around age 26 when I slowly sipped down half a bottle of light beer in order to be sociable. Frankly though I really don't care for alcohol. Not for religious reasons, but because I can't stand the taste.
I like the quote on your profile 'If you really want to find your place in history, recognize that your birth gave you a unique viewpoint in time while looking to your elders for experience and to the youth for inspiration."

I got drunk when I was a couple of years old which caused me to kick the dog apparently. I don't remember it...Not because of the alchohol but because it was too long ago. ;D
I knowingly got drunk at the age of 19, not a pleasurable experience if I can recall, lol.

"I don't drink water" (also, "I can't stand water") "Fish f*ck in it."
"I can't stand water because of the things fish do in it."
- W. C. Fields.
(Claiming exemption from the filter on historical significance. It's not like W. C. Fields pronounced the asterisk when he said the first version of the quote. The second version's more polite, but is outnumbered by the former, according to a Google search on both quotes and the name "fields", by a factor of 311,000 to 36.)
Anyone got a definitive reference as to which of the three candidates is the authentic Fields quote? I'm looking for a picture of a dead tree or a decent audio sample here. I could believe he said the latter on the air, but I could also believe that the instant the mic was off, he'd have phrased it the first way.
