Subject: Ever Wonder Why?

Written By: DoRitos on 07/22/10 at 11:20 am

Since I was very young I always wondered why the trucking company named "Yellow", had orange trucks.  You have no doubt seen the tractor trailers on the highway in their bright orange tractors with the company name "Yellow".  Ever wonder why that is?  Well here is a link that will tell the story:

http://www.yrc.com/about/history.html

If you have any "Wonder Why" questions, whether you know the answers or not, post them here.  If you do not live in the U.S. then the "Yellow Truck Company" probably doesn't make much sense to you, unless the company operates outside the U.S.

Why do people wave their hand in front of their eyes when they start to cry?

Why do women make that funny shape with their mouth when they apply mascara?

Why do people look at their watch when you ask them if they're hungry?

Why do people point to their wrist when they ask someone what time it is?  (As MidKnightDarkness pointed out back in the day, they don't point to their crotch when they ask where the restroom is?)

Why do pregnant women walk around with their hand on their stomach?

Why do people point in random directions while giving driving instructions over the phone?

... and do people really stick their toe in the bathtub to check the water temperature?  Or is that just a figure of speech? lol  I can't see myself trying to balance on one foot while trying to stick one toe in the water.. I'd probably end up falling flat on my face!!

Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?

There is a logical explanation for this.  Having interstate highways allows a state to get federal money.  Hawaii has several interstates, I've been on them.  They are numbered like "H1" "H2" etc.  But it did throw me for a loop the first time I saw one.  This is a very good example of "pork barrel" spending.  Hawaii, thank your legislatures for the pork.

when you drink a slurpee and you get a brain freeze? :o
Brain freeze or "Ice cream headaches" result from quickly eating or drinking very cold substances. It is commonly experienced when applying ice-cream (or similar) to the roof of the mouth (palate) or when swallowing it. Typically the headache appears in about 10 seconds and lasts about 20 seconds although some people experience much longer lapses of pain, with the pain seeming to relate to the same side of the head as the cold substance was applied to the palate, or to both sides of the head in the case of swallowing. The most effective way to prevent it is to consume the cold food or liquid at a slower rate. Keeping it in one's mouth long enough for the palate to become used to the temperature is also an effective preventative.

Why does it sort of sting when you drink soda right after eating ice cream, yet you can eat a root beer float with no problem?

I would think that once you add the ice cream to the root beer it sort of makes it flat.  Remember Laverne? She use to say that the milk took some of the fizz out of the Pepsi and the Pepsi took some of the ick out of the milk.  :D

Why is it that when someone does something bad, government and business leaders make new rules that wouldn't have prevented it in the first place, i.e. a man brings a bomb on a plane and tries to detonate it so now you can't use the restroom for the last hour of the trip?

If you really have to go, do they think rules will stop you?  Doesn't it just become a matter of where?

you sneeze eyes closed?
Sneezing in your body's way of getting rid of an irritation in your nose. Your nose is a sensitive organ,so all sorts of things might irratate it: allergies.
(e.g to pollen or animals), pepper, dust, pie, even bright light makes some people sneeze.
Although it seems simple sneezing is quite a complicated process -there's even special part of your brain that's devoted to making a sneeze. Your diaphragm (the muscle you use to breathe) and muscles abdomen, chest and thorot all have to work together, and the muscles that control your eyelids play a part too, making your eyes shut when you sneeze.
Why you should have a reflex to shut your eyes while snezzing a mystery but it's definitely not because your eyes would fall out if you didn't. Some people don't have the reflex to close their eyes when they sneeze and you'll be pleased to know that they keep their eyeballs inplace anyway. But, in some occasions, if eyes aren't shut and pressure isn't released through the mouth, it could eject your eyeballs because there must be a way for the pressure to be released.

I think they may have done, Philip, but I've got to ask you this...It takes one man to enter one plane from Italy to Great Britain £12 million!?! To add insult to injury, read this...

http://clericalwhispers.blogspot.com/2010/09/popes-visit-to-britain-in-funding.html

A shortfall!?! I have less respect for the pope than I do of The Queen and that is bordering on nothing. He is an arrogant blowhard who practices very little what he preaches. His 'right hand man' Cardinal Kaspar said that the UK 'was like a third world country' with it's melting pot of different races. The pope denounced Kaspar's comments and then went on to say the same thing in a different way in one of his speeches, lol. It seems they had an agenda and it wasn't God inspired.

I wonder if it cost Jesus Christ the equivalent to do his ministry almost 2000 years ago...

Why do airlines always board from front to back? It would make so much more sense if they board from back to front. So, what you now have is people blocking the aisles as they are putting their luggage in the overhead bins so everyone who comes in after them is waiting in the aisles holding everyone else up. There wouldn't be so much of a traffic jam if they just boarded the plane from back to front.

there's always a rainbow after it rains?

Subject: Re: Ever Wonder Why?

Written By: Philip Eno on 10/02/10 at 2:45 pm

there's always a rainbow after it rains?
You know that light is made up of a collection of many colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. That is why a prism  can take in white light on one side and produce its own mini-rainbow on the other side. To understand rainbows, you have to start by understanding what is happening inside a prism to let it separate white light into its colors.

A prism is a triangular piece of glass or plastic. To get it to produce a mini-rainbow, you allow a narrow strip of white light to fall on one face of the triangle, like this:

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/prism.gif

The dispersion of colors in a prism occurs because of something called the refractive index  of the glass. Every material has a different refractive index. When light enters a material (for example, when light traveling through the air enters the glass of a prism), the difference in the refractive index of air and glass causes the light to bend. The angle of bending is different for different wavelengths of light. As the white light moves through the two faces of the prism, the different colors bend different amounts and in doing so spread out into a rainbow.

In a rainbow, raindrops in the air act as tiny prisms. Light enters the raindrop, reflects off of the side of the drop and exits. In the process, it is broken into a spectrum just like it is in a triangular glass prism, like this:

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/rainbow.gif

The angle between the ray of light coming in and the ray coming out of the drops is 42 degrees for red and 40 degrees for violet. You can see in this diagram that the angles cause different colors from different drops to reach your eye, forming a circular rim of color in the sky -- a rainbow! In a double rainbow, the second bow is produced because droplets can have two reflections internally and get the same effect. The droplets have to be the right size to get two reflections to work.

The next time you spot a rainbow, you will see it in a whole new light.

I like THIS prism better.  ;)

As the white light moves through the two faces of the prism, the different colors bend different amounts and in doing so spread out into a rainbow.

when you save newspapers for many years and many years later it turns yellowish?
Paper is made from wood, which is made up mainly of white cellulose. Wood also has a lot of a dark substance in it called lignin, which ends up in the paper, too, along with the cellulose. The exposure of lignin to air and sunlight is what turns paper yellow. Lignin makes wood stiff and trees stand upright. You could say it acts as a glue to bind the cellulose fibers together. It is a polymer, a substance that is formed by the joining of simpler molecules into giant molecules that act differently than the smaller molecules did. Dr. Hou-Min Chang, a professor of wood and paper science at N.C. State University in Raleigh, N.C., compares lignin to the concrete used in buildings, with cellulose as the steel frame. Without lignin, Chang says, a tree could only grow to be about 6 feet tall. Lignin also helps protect the wood from pests and other damage. Newsprint, which must be produced as economically as possible, has more lignin in it than finer papers. At the mill, the wood that will be turned into newsprint is ground up, lignin and all. Paper manufacturers utilize the benefits of lignin in some types of paper, though. Brown kraft paper, the dark brown paper used in grocery store bags, and cardboard are stiff and sturdy because they have more lignin in them, and because those kinds of paper aren't treated with bleaching chemicals. It doesn't matter how dark they are because the printing on them is limited. To make a fine white paper, the mill puts the wood through a chemical solvent process, which separates and discards the lignin. Pure cellulose is white, and the paper made from it will be white and will resist yellowing. Lignin eventually turns paper yellow because of oxidation. That is, the lignin molecules, when exposed to oxygen in the air, begin to change and become less stable. The lignin will absorb more light, giving off a darker color. Chang says that if newsprint were kept completely out of sunlight and air, it would remain white. After only a few hours of sunlight and oxygen, however, it will start to change color.

Yes,I mean hotter especially when the temps get over 100.
It is all about the tilt of the Earth's axis. Many people believe that the temperature changes because the Earth is closer to the sun in summer and farther from the sun in winter. In fact, the Earth is farthest from the sun in July and is closest to the sun in January!

During the summer, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. The light does not spread out as much, thus increasing the amount of energy hitting any given spot. Also, the long daylight hours allow the Earth plenty of time to reach warm temperatures.

During the winter, the sun's rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle. These rays are more spread out, which minimizes the amount of energy that hits any given spot. Also, the long nights and short days prevent the Earth from warming up. Thus, we have winter!

Japanese pro baseball star Ichiro Suzuki is commonly referred to by his first name (more than his last), mainly due to the fact that it's almost always displayed on the back of his uniform (except for the years that he played for the Yankees). Ever wondered why his first name is displayed on his uniform and not his last name?

Well, here's what Wikopedia has to say:

It was during the 1994 season (in his native Japan) that he began to use his given name, "Ichiro", instead of his family name, "Suzuki", on the back of his uniform. Suzuki is the second most common family name in Japan, and his manager introduced the idea as a publicity stunt to help create a new image for what had been a relatively weak team, as well as a way to distinguish their rising star. Initially, Ichiro disliked the practice and was embarrassed by it; however, "Ichiro" was a household name by the end of the season and he was flooded with endorsement offers.

Because 40 years ago it was considered "unacceptable."

Always put two pairs of the same design socks in the washing machine, and a pair will come out.
