I know of a family who lived in New Zealand and wanted to holiday in Australia. They found a similar family wanting to go the opposite way and simply swapped houses for 2 weeks. This worked for them because they had small children and could then travel light because they got to use the vehicle,prams, childrens bowls plates etc in that house (and vice versa for the other family).
But it did come down to trusting people you have never actually met in person with your home and car etc.
I also read about a Canadian couple who swapped with an Australian couple. The Canadians experienced a really hot summer and the Aussies experienced snow. It worked out really well for them both. It didn't seem to worry them that one of the homes was more luxurious than the other.
I think you would have to form a bond via email prior to handing over keys etc. Trust is the issue... :-\\
