Mine was during the "Dirty Dancing" craze...it was "Time of Your Life" and we had the Hollywood sign as a backdrop???  Guess who got to make that &@%€~¥#+<%~€? Well it's easy for the guys today, because their dates tell them what colors they want him to only accessorise with, they want him to match the color of his vest and tie to the color of their gown and usually a basic black tuxedo. After all, the guys shouldn't out sparkle their dates prom gown, it's their fairytale dream since they were little girls and the guys let them have their dream, while they're only dreaming of getting the whole thing over with as soon as possible.

I would say dressing like your sibling is a bit creepy (especially if you're not twins but even if you are twins) but color coordinating with your prom date is stylish!

No Karen, kudos to your mom wanting to make your prom a memorial affair, she must have had a great prom too and knew what to do for you, it is a family affair in a way, like your coming out party for your parents showing you off to the world. Matching a cumberbun color with your dress is not over the top, it's done with adult affairs also. Karen, you must have looked beautiful and your date handsome, and if that means the same as "swish" you were a hit with your friends and still have great memories of your prom.

Actually I didn't go to a prom.  Such things weren't heard of in the UK when I left school (except in American films and TV shows).  However I worked at a university and every year the department had a dinner/dance thing.  Plus I went to various student end of year dinners and to a graduation party one year.  All dress up black tie or long dress affairs so similar attire to a prom I guess.

My mum made me three or four dresses over the years.  She was a clever lady.

As to theme and decorations, I think we could safely just stay in the general party theme of white twinkle lights hung from the ceiling and a disco ball in the center of the dance area.  Heck whoever wants to describe what they see when they come in, I say "go for it!".  It could be one of those ever-changing reality proms where everything changes with whomever is describing it.

I'm rather partial to "ballroom scene" of the 80's movie "Labyrinth" .  It was choreographed by the red-headed doctor (Dr. Crusher) from Star Trek:Next Gen (who is a professional choreographer that goes by the name Cheryl McFadden when dancing) (sorry, off on a tangent there)
