The Totoro contest is in honor of "My Neighbor Totoro" a film by Hayao Miyazaki.  For the contest you should have an avatar based on a movie by Hayao Miyazaki.  I'm aware some people may not have watched one of his animated movies, so we'll leave it open for two weeks so you have some time to hit up Netflix.  Listed in chronological order with some comments from me.  I haven't seen a couple of these yet myself.


Nausica of the Valley of the Wind

My Neighbor Totoro
The movie the medal is from, you can see Totoro in Toy Story 3 in the little girl's bedroom that Woody ends up at. The director of the Pixar movies also has a lot of Totoro stuff in is office in some of the behind the scenes stuff I've seen. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Porco Rosso

Another big recommend on this one, probably the easiest one for people used to regular Disney cartoons
Spirited Away
Perhaps the finest of all the movies listed here, a bit longer than most movies, gorgeous colors and backgrounds. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Howl's Moving Castle
I've seen this one a couple times, it's very good as well
Ponyo
An updated version of the Hans Christian Andersen "Little Mermaid" story, which is very cute and another solid recommendation.
The Secret World of Arrietty
I will be seeing this next week when it comes out with the family.


If you are someone who thinks of animation as for kids, these movies are way too gorgeous and deep for kids.  Kids love them, but they are clearly meant for adults to enjoy as well.  The pace is almost glacial when compared to a Pixar/Disney film. 

Disney is responsible for having these dubbed in English, and they feature some very well known actors doing the voices. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of the last things Phil Hartman provided a voice for before his untimely death.

Princess Mononoke was the first movie I saw by Miyazaki, and is still my favorite (although Spirited Away is a close second, maybe even tied).  So my avatar is the little tree spirits from Princess Mononoke.  They were my favorite characters in that movie, and yes, they do look a bit creepy. :)

No Face.  Because I'm never here anyway.

The only movie I've seen is Tortoro, but I just had to go with Porco Rosso.  Love him!  ;D

Since I have never seen any of the movies, I have no idea about any of them. But, I am a little disappoint that the witch is already taken.  :\'( :\'( :\'(  After looking at some of them, I have decided to go with Princess Mononoke.

I'm going to go with a real life version of the Cat Bus from Totoro.  I have a Cat Bus plush on my desk at work, one of my favorite characters even though it never speaks (just a loud meow or two).

Haven't seen any of these and don't know if I will hear them, but they'll give my re- adjusted ears something to try.

Nope, not much.  These never cartoons the artwork, just makes ne feel like I'm watching Japan Disney not anything like Walt Disney.

Me neither. I did a search on the names that Chucky gave. I have never seen ANY of these movies-in fact, I never even HEARD of them-but it is an avatar contest. I LOVE avatar contests (even though I hated getting rid of my cat at the computer avatar. Have a feeling that one will be back again.)  So come on in, the water is great!
