I will be one of the poor saps working. I was supposed to work a 14hr shift but cut a deal with another dispatch. She wants off for a BBQ. I don't have plans so I'm going in at noon and working til 10pm- much better than the 0730-2130 I was scheduled for.

Maybe you won't be so busy. Usually around a holiday things get slow and there isn't much work to be done :)

I have the fourth off but no plans, I still have to work the fifth.  I took the sixth off, though.  My sister's bday is Thursday so she is coming down and we are going to hit a couple of museums, dinosaur and natural history, and go to her dad's for a BBQ.  Should be a fun weekend.

Not exactly. Between alcohol related fights, drunk drivers, illegal fireworks and "shots fired" calls (which always turn out to be fireworks) I should be plenty busy.

Had a big night out last night.  Jake had a reaction to the anesthesia he had when he had his wisdom teeth were pulled(4) and became dehydrated, we were in the emergency room for a couple of hours.  Luckily it was a slow night, not too many people in so we were taken in pretty much immediately, was given fluids, and is much better. Check this, we had a real nurse!  Not a nurses aide with 9 months at a pay to play school, a real registered nurse.  That is why I go right into Boston instead of the community hospitals, most of which have become for profit.  I just love registered nurses.

Not everyone has this as a holiday.  It's just a regular work day for me

New job starts tomorrow!
And I had a really weird dream about it.Started off with my old boss trying to give me an appointment to see a customer to sell them some windows.  He'd alreay agreed the price and said they were so ready to sign up that even I could sell to them!  Anyway on the way to the appointment I remembered I was supposed to be starting my new job, so I made my way to the school to explain why I'd be delayed.  I couldn't find the science labs and ended up wandering about the school kitchens and breaking through a wall to climb up a spiral staircase  :-\\

totally weird

In about an hour I'm leaning for la. Gonna go see a screening of The Amazing a spider-man. The director will be doing a Q&A after so that should be cool. Gotta wait in line all tho because they oversold the event and I wanna guarantee my entry since I'm driving 100 miles (200 round trip) to see a "free" movie.

I think your country (as well as every other country in the "western" world) has more holidays that this country does. We only have 9 federal holidays-and most of those have been moved to the Monday closest to it so there can be a 3 day weekend.

-Jan 1-New Year's
-Jan 15th (moved to the Monday closest)- Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday
-Feb whatever (I think it is the 2nd or 3rd Monday of the month)-President's Day. This used to be two holidays, Feb 12th-Abraham Lincoln's Birthday & Feb 22nd-George Washington's Birthday.
-May 30th (moved to the Monday closest)-Memorial Day
-July 4th-Independence Day
-First Monday in Sept-Labor Day
-Oct 12 (moved to the Monday closest)-Columbus Day
-4th Thursday in Nov-Thanksgiving
-Dec 25th-Christmas

I think you're wrong. Official holidays in my country:

New Year's Day
Easter Monday
Ascension Day
Pentecost Monday
Koninginnedag (April 30)
Christmas (Dec. 25 & 26)

And then there's Liberation Day (May 5), but that's only once every five years (provided it falls on weekdays).

We don't get compensation days off if April 30 and/or December 25 and/or December 26 falls on a Saturday or Sunday.

Plus, there's now serious talk of getting rid of the two-day Christian holiday thing, and reducing it to only one day. That would rob us of at least two more days off.

MTA: Please also note that our holidays are very unequally spread over the course of a year. There's no days off from approx. June to late December.

We have fewer national holidays, but in most countries people have more personal vacation time when they go to work.  Most people in industrialized countries start work with 4 weeks vacation by law, in the US vacation isn't a right and can be zero to what ever the employer decides.

The olympic torch visited our town today on its route across the UK before the London Olympics later this month.  I was 'volunteered' to go into town early to secure our spot for the school.  The council had set aside various areas across the route for the local schools, but said it was our responsibility to ensure there was enough room for all the girls  :-\\

Anyway I saw the olympic flame and part of the torch go past but not the boy carrying it.  Shame really because I sort of know the lad - he was in Elizabeth's year at primary school.  still it was a great atmosphere and I'm glad I was able to be there.

James's school saw the flame elsewhere in town and James did some sports activities afterwards and met one of the torch bearers. I think he had his photo taken holding the torch.

Eyes are good, they just need some new glasses.  This stupid medicene I'm suppose to take doesn't get rid of anything, but just decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.  I can sufficate myself before I get a heart attack.

Will fast forward you today  to your busy dying day

Felt real good yesterday as if God had been trying to tell me something and I Was able to understand.

I e-mailed my doctor, I don't think I'm going to be able to take enough of the med to do me any good before it ends up killing me.

Maybe you won't be so busy. Usually around a holiday things get slow and there isn't much work to be done :)

Not exactly. Between alcohol related fights, drunk drivers, illegal fireworks and "shots fired" calls (which always turn out to be fireworks) I should be plenty busy.

Not to mention the full moon.

I have never been so happy to have a shift end.

Oddly enough only one complaint of fireworks this year. And No "shots fired" calls. (we always get them on the 4th)
Several calls from people wondering why offices weren't open today  ::)
A bunch of fight calls
A couple of physical assaults
One guy throwing bottles & supposedly brandishing a knife
Drunk girl being carried into a residence
A domestic violence
And 7 year old from basketball camp who reported 50,000 camp kids fighting  ::)  More like 7 kids.

All in the span of  the last two hours of my shift.  (not the phone calls about closed offices....those were this after noon.

Thank god tomorrow's my  Friday.

Last night, we settled in for our annual viewing of 1776. (Gotta watch it around this time of year). That is one movie that I can watch over & over & over again and never get sick of it-and yes, I know the entire movie line per line. I try not to annoy Carlos and I am saying every line-singing every song as I am watching-so I mouth it.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

As we were starting the movie, the thunderboomers started in. The movie hadn't been on for 5 minutes when the lights went out. I was just about to reach for the flashlight that I had just grabbed (just in case) when the lights came back on. So, we restarted the movie.

As we were watching, we could hear fireworks going off. I went into the kitchen to look out the window and yes, I could sort of see them from our kitchen window.  :o :o :o  It looked like they were being shot off from the Green. We could have gotten dress, and walked down to the corner and really saw them, but we wanted to watch the movie. I was surprised that they did the fireworks considering it was pouring less than a half hour before.

internet was slow  so I didn't do any Facebook stuff.  Mom handed me a printout of testing that had been done on Medulloblastoma survivors.  employed, driving, normal education, living independantly, dating  all a lot lower then average.  Performance IQ is in the mentally retarded range  We are a bit higher then normal with our psychological/spiritual and social/& economic areas.  Normal with health, any family.  Some other good stuff in here like the fact that Iq is lost because we lose our ability to learn new skills.  I find this all cool and I'll say once again calling myself a retard doesn't bother me at all, it doesn't mean I'm stupid, my brain is just wired differently.

Joel's birthday on the 8th.  My first art class on the 10th.  My CI appointment on the 17th.  I'm going to be getting checked for some new glasses some time soon.  Might see the counceller again on the 24th.  I get to have my first pap smear test on the 25th.  Oh and because I had to stop taking that medicene before it killed me, I'm suppose to see a endo whatever is is ologist for my colesteral.

Went WAY up north today-not quite to Canada but close. In fact, I think we could SEE Canada from where we were-along the lake. A dear friend of ours got married yesterday and they had a celebratory barbecue today. It was a lot of fun. We even knew some of the people there.

my mom is upsetting me again by saying things that seem so stupid to me that I cant stand it.  Earlier today, I was looking at all my parodies.  It's something I can do and I enjoy it.  Later, Mom said something and I got a song with that word it it in my head.  Anyway that's what I told her and she tells me that wont help me ( parodies).  I told her if I use it for a strategy to remember it wont.  There's a couple of other things that ended up p  ing me off  that still make me wonder if she may still be trying to control and or find fault in me.  I have a strength in doing parodies it may not be the thing for a job or something, but is it something totally worthless that wont give me experence for anything?  Does Weird Al not make any money?  You think I'd make less spelling mistakes every day if I was using rhyme zone once a week or so?

a thought I just had,  My mom took some advice from somewhere she later considered bad from somewhere.  I use to buy and cook my own meals.  I can find out what she thinks about me telling her that I want to start doing that again.  She was telling me how much harder it's gotten with her problems, Joel not able to have any corn of any kind and me now with the dairy products.

We think the problem is that I can't have whey.

Anyway, that was my thought just now to lower her stress, because she seems to get herself so stressed that she stops thinking clearly and ends up  ing me off.

When you are a female in construction guys tend to downplay what you know, all the time.  It is a lot of fun when someone who is arrogant like that messes up real bad and you are the one that solves the problem, which was really quite simple, after he had spent a couple of hours(wasted hours) looking for a solution.  :) .

Had our first overnighter of the season. It was very pleasant. Luck was with me casting off and coming in because there was someone at the dock both times so I didn't have jump on or off the boat. I would have to say that the only negative thing (besides not catching any keepable fish) was the fact that there was a chorus rehearsal of a bunch of bullfrogs that serenaded us for about 3 hours straight!  ::)  But now I am EXTREMELY tired. Just may take a nap sometime today.

Wow!  Too cool!!!

We have had a lot of rain in the UK in the past couple of months.  A couple of weeks ago the drain in our driveway wasn't draining properly and the area started to flood.  The drain cover had got blocked with mud/grit/leaves etc being washed down off the road.  When I cleaned it the water drained away.

Anyway today it has been raining again and I noticed the driveway drain area was flooded.  However this time it wasn't blocked; the water was bubbling up from somewhere else.  I left Dai to deal with it whilst I fetched James from school.  When I get home Dai said it appears to be water from a sewer somewhere that it coming up.  There is definitely poop in the water !  All the drains around the house are bubbling up in the same way.

So I am currently waiting for the call from the water company.  "sometime in the next 12 hours"  ::)  And we go away on holiday tomorrow!

Yesterday I had to go to the wake of a friend and fellow union member.  He was very popular and I knew there would be a lot of people.  The wake was from 4 to 8, I got there at 7 and was lucky enough to find someone who I could cut in line. Turns out people had started showing up at 2:30 to form a line. I was in line an hour before I got through and there was still a line around the corner.  They had told the funeral parlor director that there would be a lot of people, but the couldn't believe it, and the family was overwhelmed with the turn out.  They had to extend the hours of the wake. Not many people can bring out that kind of a crowd, but this guy was top of the line and I will miss him.  :\'(

thanks I hope so to and I don't see why it wont.  I need a little help hearing the higher tones because only my right ear could pick them up.

My mom got me kind of going this morning so I decided to let her go to church and let her worry about poor little  me ( and still wonder sometimes if she thinks I'm completely helpless) being home alone.  It was about my hearing - I didn't want to go because it's depressing not being to hear people, I need my CI adjusted so I can see if I can hear people even better.  Then my mom said she hasn't seen me use my hearing aid in a long time.  I don't know how many times I may have told her this, but all the crud that's always in my ears will make the hearing aid squeak.  Ear buds pop out of my ear.  The ear cant be blocked.  When I tried to say that to her she asked me if I was taking my Allegra.  Yes ( damit the crud in my ear is still going to constantly flow).

A) focus on the accomplishments, success, positive points....ie focus on celebrating what you can hear instead of wallowing in what you still can't hear.  Anything you can hear is more than you've been able to hear Ina long time. Anything you can't hear may comeback in time but you can't control that two celebrate if you can hear it later but accept the fact that you might not.

B) talk to your counselor about your interactions with your mom.  Tell the counselor you want more independence and less nagging.  Ask the counselor to mediate for you so that you two can learn how to talk to one another without pushing each others buttons

C) tell the dr at your next CI appointment about the problem with the hearing aids squeaking and the crud in your ears. Maybe there's another solution but they can't help if you don't tell them there's a problem.

A)- It just really hurts when you suddenly go deaf  and that's all, I don't want to go out and depress myself when I know I can't pich up speech from too many people yet.  The music upgrade I got is amazing though.  That's Why I turn on my radio and sing so http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc153/rocksannwastaken/forum%20smilies/thnietluisteren.gif  and there will be songs I cant hear right, but need to know because I might need to tell whoever is adjusting my implant  where to start.

B)- I am letting the counselor know.  She only sees me right now though. Unless my mom wants to  start seeing her too and get the communication resolved, I don't know what the  counselor can do besides remind me how not to loose it.

C)- I could definitely say something.

Ann I never said losing your hearing is easy...I know it's incredibly hard but rather than celebrating the stuff you can hear you always seem to reflect on the negatives of your situation. Take the time to celebrate what youve managed to accomplish. It's healhier. No one fixes everything all at once. And some things can't be fixed but you'll drive yourself crazy focusing on the negatives. See what you have accomplished and take pride in that.

Even if your counselor isn't working with your mom she may in the future. In the meantime she could help you find new ways to communicate with her....or help you see your moms side of the situation.  Have you ever looked from your moms pov to understand all she's dealing with too?

If you don't tell them they most certainly can't help. You won't know unless you try.

Actually I did post how incredible the music upgrade I got was.  Yes it does seem like I may focus on the negitive because I usually only have negitive stuff posted and I could have posted thousands more, but didn't think anyone would find it enjoyable.

I see my mom's side of the situation as far as me very possibly needing a caregiver when she dies.  I don't know what to do about that right now.  What I also haven't understood is why she's always sorry about every mistake she makes ( and a lot of times for mistake anyone could make) and in various situations she cant seem to make an observation or seem to think at all  I don't know why my mom just came up behind me and talked right into my CI.

As well as to be expected, She has alot of maturing to do, but it's workable.  We're glad to have our time and home back (even temporarily) so we can get things done and not have to focus so much on her all the time.  It was a good visit, just a little taxing at times.  We all learned alot about ourselves.  I guess we'll see how it goes from here.

My birthday itself turned out just fine. :) I am just having a "belated" celebration on the 20th.

So tonight I hope to have a nice "belated" celebration. None of my invitees said that they wouldn't be able to make it, so I hope all goes as planned...

Thinking of going out someplace special for dinner.  Call me crazy, but I just can't get myself to go into a place that calls itself a "Bistro"...and I've never really even seen a place called a bistro that actually is(or was) a bistro.

"Bistro (French: ), sometimes spelled bistrot, is, in its original Parisian incarnation, a small restaurant serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. Bistros are defined mostly by the foods they serve. Home cooking with robust earthy dishes, and slow-cooked foods like cassoulet are typical."

The doctor's office was in Newbury Park, so I had to drive the Conejo Grade to get there. This was my first time doing it without anybody else in the car; IOW, I did it solo. All I really needed to do was apply lots of acceleration going up. I felt really confident about it.

Great Job Jeff.... yes... it's massive acceleration is required to get up the grade... not just because it's steep but because the other drivers will bowl you over if you're not going fast enough  ;D

I think my camera lens needs to be wiped again.  I did take those pictures before my new glasses came so they'll probably look worse to me now.  I know the butterfly one was bad.  I'll make sure I get the camera wiped so I can get a good picture of that hibiscus flower when it opens.  Also, thanks for asking,I need someone to say something to me in some way sometimes so I don't start feeling like none cares and end up mad at everyone and leave this site.

yup, the butterfly one looks horrible  and I don't know how I got the words on the chalkboard so blurred up, but I did.  The flower doesn't look bad to me, but the camera could probably use a little wiping.  I've had a touch of something going around so there's also a good chance that my hands and arms were a bit shaky.

Going back for my 25th High school reunion tomorrow morning (the actual reunion is on Sat. night, but other meetups throughout the weekend).  We've been having ALOT of thunder and lightning this week, hopefully the weather will clear up some.  Hard to believe so much time has gone by, in ways it just seems like yesterday, and in others, it is a whole 'nother lifetime ago.  :-\\

I hope you have a good time, Patty!!

Great Job Jeff.... yes... it's massive acceleration is required to get up the grade... not just because it's steep but because the other drivers will bowl you over if you're not going fast enough  ;D

Yes they will. The last several times, I've had someone in the car to give me advice/tips (usually my mom), but I've done it enough times to where I can handle it on my own now. O0

Btw, going back down was pretty straightforward as well (I forgot to mention that earlier); I tried not to go too fast downhill while making those curves.

So this morning I had a doctor's appointment; just a typical medical exam. Overall, I'm healthy. O0

The doctor's office was in Newbury Park, so I had to drive the Conejo Grade to get there. This was my first time doing it without anybody else in the car; IOW, I did it solo. All I really needed to do was apply lots of acceleration going up. I felt really confident about it.

I don't have to see my doctor for another year.

One of my favorite admin people at the department clashes with the new chief. It was ugly. She got moved to another dept but went out in stress leave before she was officially reassigned.  She has a medical condition that is worsened by stress. Needless to say she got really sick. She ended up retiring medically in March. (or May) anyway. She worked for us for 28 yrs. she was never given a retirement party so I put together a lunch for her (on the down low) abt 25 of us are getting together today to honor her.  I hope she realizes we love her.

thought I'd work on my feet and cheese pictures today  ;)

I was outside for a while and got most the weeds in my dirt lot.  Just need to empty the water in my pond and I can start putting all my extra unlevel dirt back in there.  Underneith the pond I have a bunch of nice snails and cockroaches  I don't want to house.  Got me a nice plastic bowl at Walmart to put some fresh water in every day and put in a hanging basket that the birds took the liner material out of in the past to build their nests with.

It was stressful morning consisting of me scrambling to pick up her plaque, get flowers and balloons (had to go to 4 stores before finding one that wasn't out of helium.  ::)

All in all it cost me quite a bit of money upfront. Fortunately everyone paid (save two people who owe me.) if they pay me I actually broke out even. Of they don't I'm in the hole 30 bucks.  Not too bad considering were talking $600 between gift, plaque & lunch for 25 ppl.

I don't have to see my doctor for another year.

I didn't see one for the longest time. When I was a kid, I needed to go every year for an annual checkup. Since becoming an adult, I hadn't seen a doctor regularly, so I needed to have a physical exam. The hard part was finding one that was covered by my insurance.

Went to go see Dark Knight Rises today. I was happy and sad that the tgeater was not more crowded. I hope it's because there were two other theaters showing it within a mile of the theater I went to.

I walked to the theater (and home) 4.4 miles each way....that's right I walked 8.8 miles (actually I walked about 9.25 miles....there were times during the walk I paused the app I use on my phone and once forgot to restart it immediately.

Glad you had fun Patty. Congrats on winning some much needed cash.
Tgat happened to me when I was going to a mini reunion. I had to drive 300 miles north. I needed a hotel room too. I had $40 in the bank. I checked a lotto ticket and I won $170. It covered dinner, gas and a cheap motel just when I needed it most.

We had a great weekend, despite a few glitches.

Up early Saturday morning, breakfast and then walk to the train station to catch the train to London.  As part of the Olympic ticket price we got all zone tickets for the underground (tube) (/subway) so it was easy to travel around the city once we'd arrived.  We caught the tube across to our hotel, dropped off the bag and thought we'd walk around the Olympic Park.  Didn't realise you had to buy tickets for this (or could go in if the event you were seeing was in one of the centres in the park).  Our event was elsewhere in London so we had a quick rethink and headed to London Bridge station to walk around that area.  We ended up going on the Golden Hinde - Sir Francis Drake's ship (or should I say a reproduction).  He sailed around the world in 1577-1580.  There was some pirate based activities on board that the children joined in.

we grabbed a quick hotdog lunch and ate this on the go while walking to the next underground station to get to the Excel centre where we would be watching the table tennis.  Good marshalling generally kept things moving from the train to the event entry gates.  There we went through airline style security, bag checks etc.  Once at the actual building we were first of all told to go into the building and then told that actually the queue was outside!  Much grumbling from everyone at having to stand out in the heat when other people were queueing inside the air conditioned building.  Eventually we were allowed into the event centre where we had a look at the small exhibition and Dai queued for 40 minutes to refill his water bottle!

Inside the arena we took our seats on the back row (that's what you get for buying the cheapest possible!).  There were four tables set up, a couple of large viewing screens and a large scoreboard at the back of the arena.  With four games being played at once it was impossible to watch everything.  In the first set of matches however there was a Brit playing, so of course we followed that game!  Thaknfully Joanna Parker (?) went through to the next round.  Next set of matches we decided to be honorary Americans and followed that game.  She also went through to the next round.  Then it was time for the men's first round matches.  We watched a great game between a French player and someone from Nigeria.  It went to tie break more than once, the Nigerian being the eventual winner at 4 games to 3.  Next up was Paul Drinkhall from Team GB.  Another great game and he went through to the next round (just heard he was knocked out in round 3  :\'( ).  I felt sorry for the other players who were still going after that match finished because a majority of the crowd left.  :-\\

Back to the hotel for dinner, great food, hit and miss service.  The server took our drinks order and disappeared for ages.  We were tired and wanted to eat so Dai caught the eye of another staff member and placed our order with him.  The lad clearly didn't know his way round the order pad but wrote everything down very carefully.  Turns out he was only there for clearing tables and setting up - regardless he did a great job.  Main course arrived and was cleared away and we sat and sat.  Eventually the server came and asked if we needed anything else.  "Well, we did order dessert...".

Next day we went to the Tower of London, which was a great day in spite of the rain showers.  We saw the Crown Jewels, had a guided tour from a Yeoman warder, took part in a re-enactment of the stealing of the Crown Jewels and looked around the White Tower.

Tube and the train home and just managed the walk from the station with very tired and aching feet!

How'd you like the film?

I liked it.  I rewatched Batman Begins and Dark Knight on Saturday... I think Christian Bale was a bit more "Batman-y" in this one which can be a bit annoying but other than that - the story was good and Anne Hathaway makes a great Catwoman!

I liked Joseph Gordon Levitt too!

there was a twist I never saw coming and one I totally saw coming even tho it changes the lore a bit... Overall it was really enjoyable. and quite loud...

We had a great weekend, despite a few glitches.

Sounds great. Glad you had a wonderful time.

If I ever get to London, the one place I want to see is the Tower of London-so I am jealous.

I walked to the theater (and home) 4.4 miles each way....that's right I walked 8.8 miles (actually I walked about 9.25 miles....there were times during the walk I paused the app I use on my phone and once forgot to restart it immediately.

I just walked 3.5 miles today....had to go run an errand for work and we get an hour fit break (if we have two dispatchers on duty and aren't busy) so I combined my fit break with the errand!  8)

hmmmm wouldn't in front be better?

A) you'd get there first
B) you would step in anything that came out if she didn't make it fast enough

I have sometimes managed to take a walk in the morning, before the temperature heats up too much. Otherwise, I have to wait until at least 6pm to do it.
