2013, who'd a thunk?  ;D

Surprised this hasn't been started already.  Guess everyone really believed it wouldn't happen?

Here's to a better upcoming year, 2012 was so stressful.

I hope 2013 is a better year than 2012, 2012 was a terrible year (for us)

I can still recall the hysteria surrounding Y2K, 13 years ago now. Seems like just yesterday, almost.

As do I. I remember watching the TV that day; every hour, they showed different parts of the world celebrating the start of the new year. And there were no major glitches reported, which was a good sign.

Just got back from lunch and a movie for Sarah's birthday.  We saw Les Miserables.  It was okay, not my favorite movie.  Then end had me bawling like a baby, though.  And it is almost 3 hours long.  Be warned if you haven't gone.  Then we went to 5 Guys Burgers and Fries for lunch.  Ordered two small fries to go with our burgers and ended up bringing most of them home.  Two small is a whole heck of a lot of fries. ;D

In all, good day.

Happy birthday, baby girl.

Elizabeth is at school today (though they don't officially go back until Monday).  She is part of a team entering a science and engineering competition and they are building their model of a school and community fitness centre.

James has a friend around for the day.

Dai is at work

I am trying to motivate myself to get some housework done before I go back to work next week.  we've taken down some fo the decorations already and I need to dust and vacuum those rooms.

Speaking of complaining about work...I'm the least popular person in dispatch. The powers that be have decided I'm too valuable to be on graves. They restructured the schedule to get me back on days...  Tantrums were thrown, hissies were fitted and I probably shouldn't accept any baked goods for a while  :D

In the meantime a grievance is under works with the union. Hopefully my side wins. I don't wanna go to graves  ;D

So your co-workers want you on graveyard and not on days with them around? Nice co-workers  ::)
In a perfect world, no one person within a group of people should work graves all the time.  (unless they were hired specifically for grave shifts)

Office politics sucks. It's the 2nd worst type of dirty politics I have experienced.

It you haven't contacted them this week at all and are still waiting, I'd call back on Monday to touch base. Don't go with "I think I've done my part in regards to contacting this person".  It's OK to try again next week. Just don't tell them "You said you were supposed to call me with a working schedule last week, but never did". Just touch base with them and ask tell them you are still available for that position and if the position still open...something like that.

Sometimes people in offices get busy and a temp position is not the first thing on their minds. I used to have 17 staff working under me, it gets busy...

Well, ok. But I first went in on Thursday of last week, after receiving a call the previous morning (the day after Christmas). When I was done for the day, she paid me in cash, and then sent home an application with me (including a W4 tax form), which I filled out and returned the next day. So I called this person, from my phone, and she said she'd be in touch with me "on Monday", which was New Year's Eve. So then I waited for a call from her on that day...and after not hearing from her at all in the morning, I called her at noon; she was not ready to talk in further detail with me due to the fact that it was New Year's Eve and that things were crazy at that time of year, so she'd call me "on Thursday to discuss when I can come in and work". Thursday came and went without a call from her.

And I've still heard nothing from the court with regards to that position for which I interviewed a month ago. No phone call, email, snail mail, nada. If I don't get selected for it, they should have the courtesy to tell me one way or another, even if it's in the form of a business letter.

Hey, guess what?  It's Friday!  So happy, my employees have been kind of pissy this week.  December into January is slow ever year.  We made it all through December without any early outs/late starts this year which is good.  This week started the late starts and optional early outs.  It will probably be that way, all though not to the same extent, next week.  One of our customers doesn't send work in Dec but they are starting to again so it will help.  I just wish they would understand that I have been in their shoes so I do get why it sucks.

Back in the 1980s when I first looked for full time work, I’d apply for jobs and receive rejections letters (nicknamed FOAD letters If people here understand that  ;D)

They don’t do that anymore. You are *lucky* if you even get an email back from a job application.

These days companies get hundreds of applications for just 1 position. There is no time or staff available to reply to that volume of applicants. The larger companies use software now to narrow down the applicants, usually scanning your C.V. for key words and only selects those that pass the test.

I’d still phone them on Monday, nally. You might feel a little upset or hurt now that they haven’t contacted you yet, but if you do end up getting that job, it might be because of the phone call you will make. Be a shame if you don’t even try.

Oh yeah, had my share of FOAD letters. ;D

Nally, call Monday.  Don't assume the worst, she may just be busy.  It happens at our company.  Plus, I can tell you that our HR guy likes it when he gets a follow up call or email.  It makes the applicant look interested.

Just an observation, and I haven't been around here as long as the others, but on average I'd say you probably complain about your work here, a little more than others members.  Have you noticed that?

because the company just pisses me off, a multi-million dollar company and you can't provide things sometimes for customers and workers? Are you freakin kidding me? ::)

I suppose the old norm is to keep it all inside until you get home then complain and kvetch to a bunch of people online you've never met...  :D

You have a job, you get paid. You have an employee lunch room, and I know you get hot chocolate and you get coffee. Many people who have no job would trade for your job in a minute.

Not quite. Two dispatchers got shifted around because one dispatch has an issue and needs to be on days and my supervisors have their own issues and need me on days.

The two people scheduled to work days got moved to swings  and graves.

Jeff in my heart of hearts I just want you to know, and I hope you know this is coming from kindness with no judgement whatsoever, when dealing with people who hire you cannot hold them to a "strict" schedule. You are diligent and punctual and timely. Most of the people don't exactly operate that way. If I say I'll call you Minday I mean I'll call you sometime next week. And, if I say I'll call you Friday I mean I'll call you eventually.

when you initially posted about her calling on Monday  I wish I had told you to wait until Thursday to call her. I knew she want going to call you on NYE. Hell when she said she's call you on Monday she probably forgot mon was NYE. Sometimes you have to give people room to breathe I know you are eager to work and that's a great trait but sometimes eagerness reads as impatience. My suggestion, if you choose to take it, is send her a nice email on Monday (if you have her email address ) tell her thank you for opportunity and let her know you enjoyed the work you did for that one day. Then let her know you look forward to hearing from her if there is more work that needs to be done. (You and I both know she has more work to be done but phrasing it this way softens the delivery and comes across more pleasantly)

Obviously you are under no obligation to take my advice but I am really just trying to help you land the job.

As for the Court job things really take a long time in government work. We tested for dispatchers in may the person we hired didn't start until oct 30th. But you have waited long enough you could contact them if you wanted to.

Hissies were fitted....;D

Way to go.  I hope your side wins, too.

Sadly they don't get the shoe thing. People always think they're the only ones who suffer. No one ever has had to deal with the misery that befell them  ::)

Here's an example of a hissy that was fitted (glad you liked that it made me chuckle to)

My boss pulled in the two affected by the change. The names shall be changed to him and her to protect the not so innocent  ;)

Boss: so some things have happened and we need to make changes to the schedule at shift change
'That one guy' has to be on days (for reasons I cannot disclose) and we need q on days because in her capacity as Lead Disp we rely on her to do all the heavy lifting so we can focus on anything but disp. (Okay she probably didn't say that exactly but that's what she meant  ;D

Him: what's that mean?

Boss: that one guy will be assigned to the weekend days shift (her's) instead of swings and q will be assigned to weekday days (his) instead of graves. I'm sending you (him) to Q's graveyard shift and I'm sending her to swings.

Her: I don't wanna work swings why can't q work swings

Boss: because we need q on days for projects, meetings, requests from the chief etc

Her: well this is inconvenient there must be another solution

Boss: if you find one that works key me know.

Her: I drafted a proposed schedule that will keep me on days, put q 1/2 on days 1/2 on swings and this way Hom is the only one inconvenienced

Him: WTF

me, after hearing the story,  ;D cuz I could totally see the look on his face when he heard that.

;D  Someone needs to explain to her that 'lead dispatch' usually means seniority at the very least and should get the days.  If your job entails dealing with others who work days it is a no brainer.

Oh yeah, I get the shoe thing.  It's like they blame me.  Duh, it happens every year.  Every Oct/Nov when we get really busy I warn them to get ready for the Dec/Jan slow down.  Then they act like it is a surprise.  Maybe if they would listen instead of smile and nod they would not be so surprised. :D (another shoe thing...I used to do the smile and nod thing at my supervisor, too. ;D)

Oh, and nally?  Yeah, give 'em a call on Monday.  Nobody gets anything done this week.

Mon Dec 31: either make the holiday slowdown another 4-day weekend, or bring a bottle to work and start drinking at noon with your cow orkers.
Tue Jan 1: Day off by law.
Wed Jan 2: Catch up on all the email you missed over the Xmas/New Year's Break.  Figure out how far behind you are.
Thu Jan 3: Start doing all the stuff you couldn't do until you knew Dec 31's numbers.  Figure out whether you might get caught up tomorrow.
Fri Jan 4: Finish up most of that stuff and start thinking about what you want to do next year.

Your industry may vary, but in lots of places, 2013 business doesn't start getting done until next Monday.  If I were you, I'd call back a few hours into the Monday workday and say you're touching base after the holidays.

It works sometimes but when I first started that Pathmark, there was 3 or 4 cart keys WITH a battery cover and now they only have 1 without a battery cover and they plug up the hole with with paper towels or toilet paper. And they had one with a string attached to put around your neck so it would be easy to carry instead of putting it in your pocket.

So...Pathmark now has only 1 key (instead of 3 or 4), and it's missing the string (so you can't put it around your neck and you have to put it in your pocket instead?)  This is what you are upset about ?

Sorry Howard, I am just trying to understand your being "pissed off" and your situation from the information you provide me. Maybe I don't quite understand the problem. :(

See, this company is known for playing magic tricks, one day you have 3 or 4 cart keys and the next day you have 1, one day you have 4 and the next day maybe 2 because the last person who used it forgets to put it back on the table and that's what pisses me off.

Do you have access to a cart key when you begin your shift? If not, get one from your boss or supervisor.

For what it's worth: 2012 was okay for me. No major upsets, while on the other hand we had a nice summer vacation, my dad's 80th birthday and my 12.5-year anniversary with my current employer. Could have been a lot worse!

It is that.  ;D

When my sister was about to graduate from HS in 1979, she started applying for a bunch of jobs (back then you applied for jobs after checking the newspaper adds, or just walked into any office). My sister applied for many jobs, and each time she'd receive a rejection letter, she would scotch tape it to her bedroom wall. One day my dad asked her what she was doing. She said "I'm looking for work, these are my F**K OFF AND DIE letters I get back, I'm putting them all on the wall until I get a job". My dad...had no idea how to respond to that.  ;D  She moved out not long after that (but not because of the feedback from this incident).

yes I have access and there's one on the front end desk after the last person uses it he puts it back on the table for the next guy to use it.

Like I said there should be 2 or 3 like on busy days one guy can do one side where there are stuck carts and the other guy can do the other side but it's hard to share one cartkey for one shift on a busy day,It doesn't work that way.

As I said you know there's a lot of work and she knows there's a lot of work but if you phrase it as I stated then it sounds less demanding, like you're leaving a window open. It's a more pleasant exchange for the both of you.

I know you want someone to stick to their word when they say they'll do something at a certain time.  Of course I can only speak for myself but I've worked many different jobs and work with many different people and I've sat in in countless interviews. People never mean ill call you at exactly this time. They just mean they'll call you. Often times work piles up, other crisis happen, or they just forgot.

I only know one thing for sure Jeff.  If I told someone I'd call them on Monday and then realized after Monday was NYE I would expect them to recognize it was NYE and realize I probably made a mistake. I would expect them to wait til after the new year to call me.  If I'm being totally honest I'd be annoyed if that person called me on the afternoon of NYE and said you said you'd call but you didn't.

You can't hold people to such strict standards Jeff it's unrealistic and its just not how the world operates.

Becoming a writer may not be as easy as it might seem. First of all, you have to write, write, write, and then rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. You also have to be prepared to be rejected. Believe it or not, J.K. Rowling was rejected about 12 times with her first Harry Potter book (which I'm sure all those other publishers are kicking themselves now). When you think your work is good, there will always be someone who thinks it could be better or worse, they think it is a piece of crap-which means rewriting AGAIN.

I'm not telling you this to discourage you. I'm telling you this to let you know the reality of it. You could self-publish and try to sell your work on your own. The good news is that once you get published, it is easier to have other works published. But, it is that getting your foot in the door which is VERY hard.

My sister is a published author. Her last book she self-published and is now selling the books herself.

I, too wanted to be a writer and tried my hand at it. I have started I can't tell you how many stories. Only one I finished-a children's book (which a few people here have read). I have thought about getting it published I don't know how many times but I don't do well at rejection-which is why I haven't even submitted it to publishers. But, I have thought about self-publishing. At this point, I am not thinking of making $$$$ off of it-I only want to make maybe about 50 copies of it-one for each of the grandkids & other family members.

Anyway, I wish you well with the endeavor.

As snoz said before, it isn't insincerity, it's other work taking priority.  Stuff happens especially around holiday time that might get in the way of someone calling exactly when they say they will.  I would wait until Monday afternoon at the earliest before calling.

First day back at work for me tomorrow.  Spent the weekend mostly putting away the Christmas decorations and cleaning/vacuuming the place.  Won't have time to do such a  thorough job again for a while.

We did take a brief time out to check out a new indoor climbing place that has opened nearby.  Dai and the kids went bouldering (that is using the hand and footholds to move around the room but not getting so high off the ground that they needed a rope).  I need to get a bit more arm strength before I try it I think.

Yeah, I doubt I'll get to selling 400 million books like JK Rowling, but maybe a few thousand will be nice. As for rejection, it isn't my worse fear, but I have other fears like every human. Fears like not being able to keep my job for at least a year, which is close to being a year (11 months to be exact).  :(

True, true. That could be what happened, even this past week; who knows.

Yes, I realized last Monday was New Year's Eve, but I wasn't going to say anything about that when I spoke to the shopkeeper on the phone; it's not a legal holiday like New Year's Day is. (It is in fact a workday for lots of people.) And I did NOT say "You told me you'd call but you didn't"; in fact, I was polite on the phone.

You can't hold people to such strict standards Jeff it's unrealistic and its just not how the world operates.

I know; I don't even think Im doing that. I do, however, get confused (for lack of a better word) when someone tells me they're gonna do something and fails to do it, leaving me unsure as to what to do next.

As snoz said before, it isn't insincerity, it's other work taking priority.  Stuff happens especially around holiday time that might get in the way of someone calling exactly when they say they will.  I would wait until Monday afternoon at the earliest before calling.

And that's just what I'm gonna do.

We'll be putting ours away during this week.

I didn't mean to imply you actually said those exact words but the actions, as I layed them out imply the messages as I conveyed them.

You give people a few days and then you call.

My observation is that you may be a fairly literal person in figurative world. I can see how that can be both confusing and frustrating for you. Unfortunately the world will not confirm to your standards so perhaps it's time to try flexibility.

Morning from hell.  It started out with a dead battery.  Somehow the passenger door on my jeep was cracked.  I think it mush have hit the seatbelt when she shut it and didn't notice.  I asked my neighbor for a jump.  He helped me push it out of the driveway then told me he was late.  I told him to go on, I would figure out something.  I went in to call AAA.  He bangs on my door and tells me to "come on".  Fine.  Then he hooks the cables up backwards....pretty spark. (it was dark and we couldn't see the posts)  I finally got it started and so far the only problem was it reset the clock.  It made an awful squealing sound at first, like a belt was getting ready to go but there were no problems when I started it up to come home.  The thing that makes me so angry is I let this guy park in my driveway because we have no on street parking and he has no room in his driveway.  I know that he was late...he could have left.  I get it.  He didn't have to be a jerk about staying.  It is tempting to not let him use my driveway anymore if he is going to take that attitude with me.

Hell, I should have called AAA in the first place.  They probably would have hooked it up right.  It's just that he was outside when I was so I thought I would ask.

The rest of the week better go easier.  I may cry.

It's the 2nd worst type of dirty politics I have experienced.

glad you got going.  Maybe his "attitude" wasn't so much with you or your situation.  If it was, I don't think he would have come back and helped.  Maybe he was upset with his own initial reaction to bolt, maybe he was threatened by his boss " if you guy's are late one more time, you're axed". Maybe he just woke up, realized it is Monday, and a full week with no Holiday to look forward to.  8). Better Tuesday  8)

It has been a wonderful 24 hours. We spend most of the day with ALL 7 of the grandkids and all 4 of the step-kids (plus one in-law)-because Carlos' oldest came in from California with her 2. Unfortunately, we also had to spend some of that time with Carlos' ex & her husband. Oh well. That is price to pay. It was still good. When we first arrived, Granddaughter #4 came running up to me saying, "I've missed you." AWWWW, how sweet. We order sushi/Chinese food to feed an army-but that is what we had. We were going to wait until SIL came in so she wouldn't have to eat alone but when everyone else started to eat, everything looked good so we just had a little. And then we had "second" dinner when SIL came in. We did pack an over-night just in case we decided to spend the night. But then we figured we should go home because we forgot several things. We ended up spending the night anyway. We all went out to brunch (minus Carlos' ex & her husband).

The kids were so funny. They all kept saying, "That is MY cousin!" Of course, most of them were cousins-there were only a couple of siblings in the bunch.

The two funniest moments were:

1: Granddaughters #1 & #2 were playing in the bedroom. Granddaughter #3 came into the room crying saying, "They changed the password and I don't know it so I can't go in."

2: Granddaughter #2 comes into the room wearing an extremely tight shirt. She said, "Mom, you packed the wrong shirt for me because this doesn't fit. I don't even recognize it". Come to find out that it was Granddaughter #4's shirt. It even had her name in it.  :D ;D ;D And then Granddaughter #2 had trouble taking the shirt off.

I will post some pics later.

I never get flu shots, either. When I was in the service and HAD to, I tried to weasel my way out of them. I think I'm pregnant-yeah, that's it. Or I'm TRYING to get pregnant. (Always a good excuse). Sometimes I just couldn't get out of it so ended up getting one.  8-P 8-P 8-P

Now, it is not mandatory so I don't. Carlos' doc always tells him that he wants me to come in for a flu shot and Carlos says to him, "Good luck with that."

Cat

I'm with you.  I never get the shot.  I can see getting it for young kids, sick or elderly people but I don't think I need it.  I am kinda young and relatively healthy.  If I get it I will deal.  I haven't had the flu in years.  ****knocks wood****

Busy day yesterday. First we went to an auction. Always fun. Yeah, we came home with a lot of junk that we will sell as antiques.  ;) :D :D ;D ;D  I only had a couple of hours to do a little research on the stuff when we were off again. Had dinner at Carlos' doc's house. It was a very enjoyable evening.

I guess everything in the last week caught up to me because I slept late this morning. When I opened my eyes this morning and looked at the clock, I was shocked at how late I slept. I guess I needed it.

Now, I have a lot of stuff to do. I only have a little more than a week to get EVERYTHING done.

And for all of you who aren't feeling well, please get well quickly and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T GIVE IT TO ME!!!!! I really can't afford to be sick for the next week or so. In two weeks will be ok but not now.

Good for you! :)

I remember when I was an undergrad student and had multi-page papers to write. I got 'em all done, though...and there was one paper in particular that I did which was at least 8 pages long, specifically for an upper-division history class. The paper had to be about a particular event in the history of California, and the significance of it, and I chose the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. As I recall, I did quite well on it.

Today started out as one of those days where you just need to go home, pull the covers over your head and don't come out til tomorrow.

It is realllllllllly cold here.  (woke up to -2 Farenheit)  We just had a nasty snow storm and so much snow was stuck under my car the tires ground against it when I turned.  I took it to a car wash yesterday and concentrated on the undercarriage.  I got a big chunk of it off but not all.  Anyway, I woke up this morning to a driver door that wouldn't open.  Sarah crawled in the passenger seat and opened it for me.  I get to work and the lock is frozen so the door won't lock.  I make sure nothing of value is in the truck and go in with it unlocked.  Seriously what are they going to steal?  My stock radio with a cassette deck? ;D

I get to my desk and my computer has the blue screen of death.  Crap.  I reboot and get the lovely message that the hard drive can not be found.  I look under my desk and there it is so I guess that is not what the message meant. ;)

Thankfully that is where hell ended.  I sat at another desk til the big boss came in.  They got me the computer from the conference room.  It is older (the office package on it is from 2003)  but it is so much faster.  Not complaining.

Then I got my new glasses in the mail.  I got the prescription and ordered them online.  They are different that what I normally get so it will take some getting used to.  They are a white frame.  My sister hates them.  Sarah thinks they are cute and my mom said she likes them.  I just have to get used to them.

And, Monday is over.  Bring on Tuesday.

It was worse where my sister lives, about 75 miles north of me -13.  It does get this cold in Utah, but not often.  This is the second week in 3 that it has done this.  The part that really sucks is the haze gets trapped in the valley and you end up being able to see the air.  Bad.

he didn't... I didn't ask!  I am a special case always due to the chronic asthma, others may get away with 6 day short burst of prednisolone, oh no I get a 12!  I knew I was going on those when I couldn't breathe, my chest was tight and my rescue inhaler wasn't touching it.  He put me on the pred, and doxycylclene, and some tussin (sp?) pills for cough.

I just wanted the meds, when you have been in respiratory distress as much as I have, it doesn't really matter "what it" just how do I get better!

Sorry for not having your answer.  We didn't draw blood, it wasn't strep, I didn't have a swab stuck up my nose and into my ear drum!

I think I finally broke my fever tonight!  I had to go pick up the girls from school, I parked in the lot and walked in and waited (sure enough they got on the bus and road it to the high school).  Walked back to the lot and drive to h.s. and parked in that lot, walked across the school (outside 20 degrees) and I was gasping by the time I got girls.  I was also sweating buckets....  That lasted for the next 2 hours!  Sucked!  I hope it is done!

I still don't know what I will leave for sub plans (the semester switched classes today) - can I cry now!  I just want to rest!

May you be on the mend!

Today was my 10th wedding anniversary, we didn't really do much.  We went out for lunch and had tacos at Qdoba.  We have some really stressful things going on with our neighbor right now, so neither of us really felt like celebrating much.  We'll get around to it some other time.  We both know we love each other and that hasn't changed since we met 12 years ago...

Happy Anniversary.

That'll be in my list of things to do on Monday (either before I go to the library, or after I come back home, in the afternoon). I have the number for the office, so I'll call them and politely ask where things stand.

Did you ever get a chance to contact them about that temporary job? Any news?

I was definitely at home, it just felt like I wasn't. I think I've been staying inside too long and I probably need to go for my walks or something. That could be it.

It probably is. But yesterday I set aside some time to go for a nice walk, even with this weather it was nice. I really should do that more often.

Ah, that's good. Glad you were able to get some exercise. I've been wanting to do that myself this week, but the weather hasn't been so great. Today it should be, so maybe sometime this afternoon I'll be able to get out there. :)

Hold on nally I thought you really wanted that job?  No one suggested you shouldn't call them at all, just that you should try not to sound impatient with them for not calling you first.

That other job (the governmental one) is probably ready for a call back now.  Or perhaps ask if they have any new vacancies on the horizon.

Agreed, Karen.

I’d still phone them on Monday, nally. You might feel a little upset or hurt now that they haven’t contacted you yet, but if you do end up getting that job, it might be because of the phone call you will make. Be a shame if you don’t even try.

The governmental one is the court processing assistant, which I interviewed for at the beginning of last month. And I've heard nothing from them about whether the position has been filled or not. No call, no email, no letter, no nothing. However, the person I found out about this position from, told me today he'd contact them (either today or tomorrow) to see what the deal is, and get back to me asap.

Meanwhile I will continue to search on my own. In addition, next week when I volunteer at the library again, I will talk to my supervisor there and ask him about possible paid positions there, as I have enjoyed volunteering at the library and have thought about what it would be like to work there.

I am going for my bachelors(4 to 6 yrs) in History. This will be my second year in April. I was inspired when I read somewhere that there was a 46 year old attending a university and that it was her last year(that was last year). I thought, well if she can do it then I most certainly can, I am only in my early 30s. One of the best decisions I have ever made!

I also was a non traditional student. I started in 96 at the age of 28/29. Finished my last class and finally got my BA in 2010 at the age of 42. I went for 4 yrs straight thought I was done and then found out some jr college classes I took 88-90 didn't transfer like I thought. I took time off then finished my last 5 classes over the summers from 05-10

I went back to school in my late 20s. I think I was something like 36 when got my B.A. (in History & Early Childhood Education-K-6). I did attend some graduate school but never did get my M.A. I withdrew because at that point I was pretty much burnt out. I had the intent of going back but that was over 10 years ago and I have the feeling it ain't gonna happen.  :-\\

There is a saying: Education is wasted on the young. I'm sure you see it where students are more concerned with the parties that are going on rather than studying. Non-trads make better students because they appreciate getting an education rather than going wild because it is their first time away from home.

Snowing.  Every time it happens in the UK you'd think we've never seen the stuff before.  Because snow isn't guaranteed each winter many councils don't have snow ploughs or they wait until it has stopped and then start ploughing.  Meanwhile the roads slow to a crawl and people don't know how to drive in the stuff.

I spent 10 years as an undergrad before finally getting my Bachelor's degree. Mainly because I started out in one course of study but switched to something else when my original path wasn't going as planned. And I don't plan on going for an M.A. anytime soon (just my personal choice, that's all).

this morning we went orienteering.  I followed James round his course doing some coaching with him.  Good job I did because the course had a really hard section that he probably wouldn't have coped with on his own.  the snow made it interesting as well.

Busy couple of weeks ahead at work.  The girls in the final couple of years have to do assessed practicals (experiments) for their science qualifications and they are taking place over the next few weeks.  i think tuesday this week and wednesday next week look quiet but otherwise !!!

Yeah, it takes practice. Like I said, I never typed more than 10 pages in my whole life, maybe not even 10, maybe like 8 at the most!

It gets easier for some reason for me after the first 4 pages, I remember looking at my computer screen blank, not knowing the details of my story, but already having a concept or 'main idea' at least.

As for me, I am having troubles breathing today.  I don't know if I am getting sick or the air quality is getting to me.  We have the worst air in the country right now...awesome, huh?  The breathing issue started at work.  My desk is right by the coat rack and one of my employees is a heavy smoker who smokes in her car so the coat can't air out and it hangs by me.  That usually gets my eyes watering.  Then there is also the creeping crud that is making it's way around my office.  Not happy either way.

Today at 3pm Pacific time (which is about an hour from now) I'll be interviewed at another temp agency; I was contacted last week from someone who I met through networking, and that person told me over the phone that they might have a position or two that can use my skills.

good luck with the interview.

Howard, I had the interview already. And I made a follow-up post saying that it went well:

Thank you; it went pretty well. :) Now I have to write thank you letters to the people who interviewed me.

there was celery with peanut butter and my mom has to tell me as if I cant see it or am too retarded or something to know what it is.  I've been really badly depressed lately and then my mom does this.  If her goal is to p--- me of, it works every time.  She doesn't want me to write parodies as often as I use to because it isn't a job or volunteer work.  She's called me a lazy ass about this in the past and I laughed ( how judgmental of her).  Sorry, but everything is hard for me and if I do learn something I forget another.  Live seems so much dam harder for me then it might for others.

Carry on my wayword sun        if making people laugh is something I can still do I'll do it.  Whatever I can do is what I can do..

why don't you turn me loose

I'm not saying my mom isn't frusterated, I'm sure she is.  I do't know. I'm just gonna to try to do what I can

I just moved into a new apartment from a small trailer, decided to get cable after 6 years without it. Cable guy didn't show up since I supposedly wasn't in the system, in the end I had to go to Comcast, now I have cable.  :)

I said I couldn't get sick until Thursday and today is now Thursday and guess what? I'm sick.  :(  Not too bad, just a bit of a head cold and a wicked sore throat (post nasal drip). I actually had this for a few days now-sniffling & sneezing but the sore throat came on yesterday which I was totally trying to ignore. Now, I can just do nothing and take care of myself. The only thing we HAVE to do is go to the grocery store. Otherwise, we don't have anything else planned for today.

I had came across some papers of a study in 2005 with Medulloblastoma brain tumor survivors and it says that their total IQ fell within border range.  Their performance IQ fell in the mentally retarded range.  Good reminder that I'm not going to be doing well in performance levels like jobs or something.

If this is what you have, just because the range says something, doesn't mean you will fall in that range, you may score higher or be in the upper range of it. Give yourself a chance.
When I was 13 or 14, my teacher told me that he thought my IQ was low because I didn't do well in languages. So I took a standardised IQ test. The teacher got my score and asked me to do the test again. I didn't know why. I thought my IQ was really low at that point. Turns out my IQ was over 140 on both tests (not that it means anything in life, I'm nowhere near being a millionaire with that IQ ;D)

If I didn't do the tests myself, I may have thought my IQ was low for my whole life. Might have hurt my confidence too. So, don't sell yourself short!  :)

No I'm just observing that getting a great job or something may not be a strong point of mine.  I know my mom thinks having a job or something is very important.  Hey, I said I'm going to do my best however.  If I cant do anything to get a job,  start a business, volunteer for much then I cant.  If I cant make up my mind and have no idea what to do then I don't and cant. I'll just continue doing what I can and my mom can stop telling me what's at the dinner table because I'm not blind or stupid.

That doesn't mean there aren't jobs out there that you can't do. There are plenty of people functioning at lower iq levels working jobs. You've just got to figure out what tasks you are capable of handling and find a job that suits your abilities. It may be difficult but not impossible. There are groups that may be able to assist you fonding jobs if that's what you'd want to do.

Next Wednesday we are moving into an apartment.  I don't want to announce it on Facebook, because some of the reason that we are leaving the house (that we finally paid off last April) is on my Facebook "friends", and if they found out that we are moving out, they would make it much worse for us.  Basically, we're trying to do this as quietly as possible.  We may (or may not) eventually sell the house or allow my hubby's cousin to live in it.  Tension here amongst my hubby's family and our neighbors who are really just overstepping boundaries, have made it very very unpleasant to live here for now.

We are not taking most of our furniture, we'll just get other stuff here and there.  It'll not be too far away from here, about 20 miles so we can come and go (bringing things as we need them, and throwing out stuff as we go through it.)  I'm hoping for the best.
I would appreciate that if you are my friend on Facebook, please do not mention or even hint that I am moving.  ::)

Still have the bug but I'm feeling a bit better. We went to bed about 9:30-though I think our bodies thought that it was 8:30 with the time change. Slept at least 10+ hours-BOTH OF US. We really needed it. Traveling always wears us out.  And this bug doesn't help either.

Not much planned today. Just taking it easy and doing some cleaning. Apparently, we had unwanted critters take up residence in one of our cupboards. I think we got rid of them (with a spray of raid) but they left a mess that we need to clean. And now all our dishes (which are in the cupboard next to that one) have to be cleaned. I didn't realize that my husband was going to spray there without taking everything out first.  ::) Yesterday, we threw out a lot of food-food that had been sitting in the freezer for 2 years. Some is still good but others... 8-P  One of my step-daughters was here since we have been. She left a bunch of stuff-including a nice bottle of wine. Wasn't that nice of her.  ;D ;D ;D  It will take a few days to get everything in order. Hopefully by then, I will be feeling better. And then we can HIT THE BEACH!!!!    ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

any job that serves a purpose is a great job...

For the record I appreciate the people who do those menial labor / every day jobs way more than I appreciate the people with the white collar jobs.. I'm never happy to see the chief of police walk in the door but I am always glad to see the janitor, the electrician, the plumber, the computer techs, the phone guys.....because they make my job easier and do the stuff I can't or don't want to do.

I appreciate the waitresses, cooks, bus boys, cashiers, clerks, baggers, parking vendors....because the world would not operate if people didnt hold jobs like these.

20 miles further away, but at least it's mostly highway, so...
It's a real nice apartment (smaller then the house (obviously) but newer... ammenities (if you will).)  I'll get a fireplace and a dishwasher.  A bathroom for each bedroom plus a half-bath for the main floor (which in itself is a blessing, always was a pain to have to race upstairs after waiting too long to go to the bathroom because I was playing on the computer.)  ;D  Plus a one car garage, which may or may not eventually hold a car (depending on how much we bring with us.)  No more scraping ice and snow off the windshield of the car.

I'm using this as an opportunity for a complete life overhaul.  Less  hoarding, more exercising (we get a free year membership to the YMCA), eating healthier/less eating out (simply because the kitchen is much bigger and we'll be paying rent again.)  I think hubby will be less stressed (always a blessing) once we get this move over with (although since we don't have to be out of the house by a certain date, we can kinda spread moving over a longer period.)

If you need furniture, auctions are the place to get it.  ;D ;D ;D

As for me, I was SUPPOSED to be feeling much better today. After sleeping really well the night before, I figured one more night like that, I would have this cold kicked. But, that didn't happened. It seemed like as soon as I started to fall asleep, I felt a tickle on my throat and started coughing and coughing and coughing. I would get up and the coughing would subside-until I laid back down and fall asleep-and then it happened all over again. I should have slept standing up. About 4 this morning, I took a decongestant but that only made me so sleepy and groggy and made it even harder to get up when I started coughing again. All night long I kept telling myself, "I slept last night. Why do I need to sleep tonight, too." or "Sleeping is overrated." Now, my throat is so raw and I am VERY tired. I apologized to Carlos for keeping him up all night and he said, "I did ok." That was sweet of him. He said that he was going to suggest that I sleep in the rocker. Maybe I should have. Not saying that I would have gotten much sleep but I didn't really sleep in the bed either.  :-\\

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Knew my first impression of inthe00s was right, that it's a friendly community.  :)

Better day today, I've decided to cheer myself up by looking at what kind of exotic, 1990s old-stock toy cars the hobby shop downtown has, thinking about picking up one or two, fix any repairs needed after 15-20 years in a warehouse, take pictures, all that... and I'm thinking about that once I'm on disability, I might take a junior-college graphic design course, and if I'm good at it, offer my services as a donation or freelance effort to nonprofit groups, bands and the like.

I would LOVE to do something like designing beer bottle labels for the local Ninkasi, Oakshire, Rogue Ales and Hop Valley craft breweries or design posters for bands that perform here, or if I move to Portland, the Bay Area or San Diego like I've thought about, doing similar stuff there.

Btw, I took a look at your parody but I didn't comment/vote on it because I DKTOS. (I know, I can look for it on Youtube and try to follow along.) However I'm sure that it's well-paced, based on the 5-5-5 votes it got.

Funny.

It's true though that I've gotten a lot of pain from her choosing to raise me dysfunctionally my first five years and then having to live with it longer so my brothers get equal treatment.  That makes 15 years, half my live.  I think I'd forgotten how bad that's hurt me.  something else I think I forgot is how careful my mom says I have to be so I don't loose my SSI.  My answer to this was why don't I do nothing then.  I've felt all my live like my mom wants to control my live or something.  Possibly make me look worse then her so she can feel better about herself maybe.  I don't know, I'm just going to try to do the best I can do.

Busy day. The exterminator came today. After cleaning out all the cabinets and drawers, he sprayed EVERYWHERE. I thought he was only going to spray a few places but man, it was EVERYWHERE. After he left, so did we. We decided it was a good time to go to KMart and to let everything dry. While we were on our way to KMart, Carlos' cousin called and invited us over. They live right around the corner from KMart so we were heading that way anyway. It was a WONDERFUL visit. They are super nice people. As many years as I have known them, this is the first time I have been to their house. Every time we saw them, they were staying in their parent's condo which is in the same building as SIL's condo. (In fact, it was his dad who build the condos.)

So now we are back and all the cabinets are empty and everything needs to be cleaned and put away.  ::)  So, when does this vacation start?

This afternoon we went to her place to visit, as she'd been sick last night but didn't let us know about it until around lunchtime. We did some shopping for her before going out to her place, and did some tasks for her while we were there. She is always appreciative to have people around. :)

Busy day planned. Doing laundry now.  :P Then we are taking a trip to Home Depot & back to KMart to pick up all the stuff that we forgot to get at KMart yesterday.  ::)  Have to put the kitchen back together. Everything is still out of the cabinets from yesterday. I also have to wash ALL the dishes in the house. YUP-ALL OF THEM!!! After sitting here unused for 2 years plus having the place sprayed yesterday, they all have to be cleaned.  :P  I'm hoping that we find a small mop today because this floor needs to be cleaned, too.

Oh yeah, I found evidence of termites on our bathroom door.  :-\\  I hope the exterminator zapped them.

All of this on not so much sleep last night. About every hour or so, I would wake up coughing.

So, when does this vacation start?

Good luck with the move. I know it can be stressfull...so take it easy! Hope your new apartment will bring you the (internal) peace and quiet you're looking for. :)

So...I had an interesting day at the library today. At noon, I was going to leave, like I usually do at that time, but my supervisor, Peter, was headed for the back room and I needed to ask him something. I finally caught up with him in the break room (in the very back of the building)...and there was a going-away party set up for him in there. Apparently, today was his last day, and he said he was going back to school full time, starting next week. So someone will take over his duties (his title is "Volunteer Coordinator"; in fact, he's the man I spoke to back in September when I was looking to volunteer there); meanwhile, there is an interim person I'll be checking in with each time I go there starting tomorrow. So I hung around for almost an hour, and ate some food that was there (including pizza catered from Pizza Hut).

Another busy day today-mainly putting the house back together. We still haven't since the exterminator came in the other day. Yesterday, we got shelf lining so we need to put that in before putting away all the dishes. We were just so tired after coming home yesterday that we didn't bother. Hey, we are vacation so we can take our time.  :D ;D ;D

Our jobo tree is coming down today-YAY!!!

http://puertoricoloves.us/?p=340

The reason why we don't like it is the fact, that it does produce a lot of fruit but there is only a day or two window where you can actually eat it. Also, when we did get a chance to eat it, we didn't like it.  :P So, it is coming down today along with the termites' nest that was zapped the other day. It was good that the exterminator zapped that nest before the tree came down otherwise all those live termites will scatter.  :-\\  So, no need to worry about that now.

Yesterday, we bought these stakes that you put in the ground around the house and it gets the termites there. So, hopefully, we can protect our little house from those nasty creatures. That is one thing that I really hate about Puerto Rico-the island is INFESTED with termites. Around here it is not at matter of IF your house is going to get termites, it is a matter of WHEN. It is a never-ending battle.

We are getting something like that today. All the snow has melted yesterday & today. We are expecting 15 degrees C (about 60F) today, and by tomorrow night it will be -14C (or about 8F). Weird.

After almost reaching 60F yesterday at this time, it is now about 17F with a windchill, making it about 0F. A drop of 60 degrees in 24 hours  :o
