Subject: Backyard bird watching

Written By: Jessica on 05/08/14 at 12:11 pm

I'm trying to remember if this topic has been done before, but my brain is shot.

Anyway, I don't have a backyard, but I rigged up a bird feeder for the tiny little dudes and have been watching them for awhile now.  I mainly get a variety of sparrows, but I've had a few interesting birds show up, such as black-capped chickadees, cardinals, mourning doves, and lately, a pair of brown-headed cowbirds.  Oh, also, I spotted an American goldfinch today.  I wish I had pictures, but the cat likes rushing the balcony door (glass door, good vantage point) and scaring them away, which is why I linked to their What Bird pages (a valuable resource for me).

Anyone else participate in this fascinating (yes it is, shut up) pastime?

Not so much here.  All I see are seagulls and magpies with the occasional robin thrown in.  I love driving in the more deserted areas and seeing hawks and eagles, though.

We live in a high rise and get our share of pigeons. During the fall (last year) an eagle landed on our balcony. It was grand, huge and majestic. I didn't move, because I knew if I moved the slightest, it would take off.  It was 5 feet away from me...for about 60 seconds.
Appreciated the experience.

yeah I moved to look for my camera and it took off. ;D

Yup. We have the birdfeeder right outside the kitchen window. We watch as we are reading the morning paper.

I captured this woodpecker a few years ago:

Woodpeckers are awesome!  That was another one we had over here, digging into the suet blocks.  Warped, that is freakin' cool about the eagle.  I've only had a hawk around here, but he took off before I could snap a pic.  Thanks, cat. :P

Two crows pooped on me when I was 9. I took it as a sign of good luck!  ::)

I forgot if it was one or two crows, but I was pooped on.

We had a woodpecker on the tree opposite us, it was gone before I reached the camera.

I get out the binoculars on occasion.  Without too much effort I can see sparrows, black capped chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, robins, woodpeckers, red tailed hawks, turkeys, egrets, swans, seagulls and loons.  This year, for the first time, I actually saw a snowy owl.  There are many around the area, but I had never seen one.

There was a hawk just chilling on the dog run fence right now.  Pretty cool.

We put up the birdfeeder and Carlos filled it. Two days later it was gone.  :o :o :o We thought we had A LOT of birds. He filled it up again and this time we saw the culprit. It was a greedy little chipmunk. He would fill his cheeks, bring it to his nest and go back for more. He drained the entire feeder.  >:( >:( >:(  We read that they won't go on foil so today Carlos wrapped the pole with foil and partially filled the feeder-to see if it will work.

But, we have been having all sorts of birds come to the feeder. Don't know what half of them are-yet. I know we have been having a lot of woodpeckers. I just can't believe how many more birds there are here then there are a block away.

Crafty little rodents. ;D

The Gray Catbirds are back.  I spotted them yesterday, and the male was out there today.

Cat, check out Whatbird.  They have a search feature where you can put in region, colors, size, shape, markings, etc.  It's pretty helpful.
