Subject: Texting acronyms

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 06/18/14 at 2:57 am

Okay, one thing about me, I don't text.  I hate the little keypad.  I hate noodling around with initialisms and acronyms.  I don't like to read texts.  If my friend tells me he texted me, I tell him once again, I made it clear right from the start that I don't like texting and I don't read texts. My eyes aren't what they used to be.  Email, phone, leave a voicemail, send a pneumatic cablegram, pony express, smoke signals, whatever, just don't text me.

I'm also and insomniac, but that's irrelevant, unless you're wondering why I'm posting at 4:00 a.m.

Anyway, I'm holding out on texting for as long as I can, but I might have to give in.  One thing I notice about texting is it's full of these godawful anagrams and initialisms.  I know some basic ones, such as IDK, LOL, BRB, STFU, and FML.  What are your favorites?  What anagrams/initialisms should I know? Which ones are in style?  Which ones are out of style?  Let me know and I'll take notes.

One stipulation, use real ones, not joke ones to pull a fast one on an old geezer, mmmkay?
:)

I don't think this one is used all that often, but one Internet acronym I've always thought was kind of funny is DILLIGAF, which stands for Do I Look Like I Give A F...?  ;D

IMHO, BTW, I would think anagrams would confuse matters.

Those must be 90's acronyms, before texting came along.

WAY before the '90s. I remember those from the '70s-and they were probably around even BEFORE that.

Apparently, the first known use of OMG (for Oh My God!) was in a letter from British admiral Lord John Arbuthnot Fisher to Winston Churchill in 1917.

I don't abbreviate as much as many other people do.
I have a dinosaur flip phone which to say is not internet friendly, so I tend to abbreviate but not that it confuses my older friend.
just enuf 2 ge my idea across. you can decide for yourself how much you want to type but i someone says CMB! you need to know i it means call me back, or "I Can't make it Bob"...  I know you aren't bob, but I hope you see the point.
Good luck. I  know 40ish aged folks who do not text. You are not alone.

Just the other day I told one of my friends "L8R SL8R" and he said "what?" I said "Later Slater."  :)

ABC- Always Been Chewed

I have only known this to mean "Already Been Chewed."

I too rarely text and when I do I do not abbreviate nor use acronyms. Text speak is just another
nail in the coffin of the English language. It won't be long before we are just grunting at each other
once again.

I see a lot of numbers that go together with the letters like GR8, L8 or B4.

I cannot see myself using "Already Been Chewed".

When texting, I kept to the correctly spelt words.

Already Been Chewed is an acronym referring to a piece of gum.
