Here in the UK it is the first day the those vulnerable people that have been shielding during lockdown find that the restrictions are now eased. Those that can return to work can do. For me, my shielding continues, I wish to stay safe.

I'm trying not to be so obvious about April 1st. Lol. They're not funny, haha. ;D

Good morning everyone(well it's morning here). Happy first of the month!!  :)

I live in the north east...what's the deal with the rabbits? We don't say that here in Rhode Isand lol. Can someone explain, please?

White rabbits because the ground was white from snow this morning.

That could easily be the case May 1 too. But I’ve never seen new snowfall in June.

Hmm. That kind of explains it. I was thinking it means "good luck" during the new month.

From Google:

"On the first day of every month, you may hear people saying 'White rabbits'. According to superstition, the saying is meant to give you good luck, if you say it on the first day of the month before midday."

I spent yesterday being safe indoors, and plan a quick shop and a good walk, keep a safe distance.

Today is NOT a work day for me, because I worked yesterday instead. That's right, I worked on three consecutive days...all at the office.

While I was at the office yesterday, I found out that I'll have to work more often at the office than from home, because the process for one of my tasks is going to change, and I'll need to be at the office more regularly to work with it.

For the most part, I've enjoyed working from home during the past year, because for one thing I save wear-and-tear on the car, as well as fuel consumption...but there are things that I'll need to do more regularly at the office now.

Then he came to us for the day. Dai had hidden some small chocolate eggs around the place for James, my dad and me to look for. Apparently there is still one somewhere, so James and I will keep our eyes peeled.

I still have yet to receive my vaccinations. Hopefully I can get them this month.

However, I do have a doctors appointment this morning. I have to visit a 'general' surgeon to remove a growth on the top of my head. I don't know how it got there, but it has developed over the past several months...and it will get taken out this morning.

You have to bear in mind, I found the older I get, the longer it takes to shake off flu.

Of course.

Btw, my appointment this morning was actually a consultation. I had to visit with the surgeon so that he could examine the lump on my head and determine the best way to go about removing it. That part is done. He said that within a week, a date should be set for the actual surgical operation. (In all likelihood, more than a week from right now.) If I don't hear back by the end of this week, I will give a call to the office and follow up.

I got my shot this morning. Single shot Johnson and Johnson is what they were giving. They said it affects you more the younger you are, and most people start to feel effects after 8 hours. So should be right about when I get home. My arm feels fine so far. It started out fine when I had a tetanus shot too but later on it ached for like 2 weeks.

Anyways...today was a work day for me, at the office. I mentioned earlier that I will be working at my office a little more regularly now (and if I have to work from home again, my boss will let me know), due to some changes that will be occurring with the way I do much of my work.

I also found out that one of my coworkers has announced his resignation -- after only 16 months of being in the company (he was hired in late 2019) -- so his last day will be next week. (He has accepted a new offer elsewhere.) So my boss has reached out to hopefully find someone else to fill his void as soon as possible. This means the rest of us in the office will probably have to work more hours to learn/perform some of his duties for the time being. This is kind of a bummer that he's leaving us, but sometimes things happen the way they do.

What else would I get? Besides the vaccination card?

Besides extreme chills and a fever. Right now around 100 but shivering and chattering like I stepped out of a cold lake. I’ve never felt like this with a fever. My temperature is normally around 96-97. So it’s doing it’s job. Not tired though. And no pain or redness where they put in the shot, looks like just an IV site.

My second one is on May 6th. So far I don't feel anything I feel normal.

In other, spending some time with my family. Chatting over coffee. It's a great day.

Good for you. Which one did you get?

BTW, your arm will probably be very sore tomorrow. Keep moving it.

My mother said the same thing. But it's been three hours and I feel just normal. They gave me Moderna. It was so fast! I didn't feel a thing.

I know some people who got the Moderna and their arm had redness and swelling like a week later. I saw a news story where that’s a common side effect. Still the shot is well worth it.

Today I have itchiness around the arm, and muscle aches. I'm also really tired. I reported it to the CDC on V-Safe.

They gave me the paperwork for the v safe too and I’ve been reporting daily to it. Everyone who reports helps them maintain a more accurate list of side effects.

I am very happy for a couple particular friends of mine...today they finally had their wedding!

The bride is a dear friend of mine whom I've known for 15+ years; she and the groom began dating three years ago, and got engaged in August of 2019. By the first of September, they originally set their wedding date a year in advance. But they had to postpone it due to Covid, so last fall they rescheduled it for April 10th 2021, which is today. I wanted to attend it, but since social-distancing and other Covid guidelines are still in effect, they "virtually" invited me; that is, to watch the livestream on Facebook. So I attended it virtually. :) It began at 2pm Pacific time and ended an hour-and-a-half later.

Did another Flowbee haircut today.

Got a home gym off Craigslist. Brand new for $200, the guy’s wife died before she could use it. Going in my basement where it’s refreshingly cool and dry when it’s hot in the summer. I’m skinny but want to be in better shape and this will give me some incentive. Also in the winter when my only exercise is hauling pellets and snowblowing. I was out of breath after just hauling the pieces down there.

I told them that I was going for a run afterwards and they didn’t say that I shouldn’t or to take it easy.

They also said that there doesn’t seem to be a pattern of how people react from one dose to the next. Some people are worse first time, some second time, some have no reaction (other than perhaps a sore arm). So far I can just feel it in my arm.

I think it involves a vacuum cleaner somehow.  I picture a blade that spins when the vacuum cleaner sucks, with some kind of attachment to set the length of cut. Hen as you run it over your head it sucks the hair in, and cuts it off to the same length, then the hair is collected automatically.

Yes they’ve been around since the 80s. It’s like clippers that hook to your vacuum cleaner. So it both sucks up the hair and stands it up to length. Just like how I watch the hairdresser pull up hair to length between her fingers before chopping it off. You clip on spacers to any length you want. I go long on the top, shorter on the back, and very short around the ears.

I bought it at Goodwill about 10 years ago in brand new condition for a whopping $3. Original box, instructions, oil, everything. I remembered the commercials so I figured I’d try it someday. 2020 that someday came. I don’t care so much about saving the $20 at the salon as becoming proficient at something that most people find unique. They sold for $100+ and in 2020 people were snapping them up like crazy. Also got a boost in recent years when George Clooney announced he had been using one for like 25 years.

Actually I sometimes miss the salon because the cosmetologists are really cute. When things go back to normal I’ll go back sometime.

Certain restaurants in my area are allowing people to dine inside once again...at limited capacity (only 25%?). I still won't go inside one until I get my vaccinations.

In fact, I just signed up online this morning so that when I do become eligible, I'll get notified as to where I can go to get mine.

Anyways...today at work I learned some new tasks. This is because our Administrative Assistant, who recently announced his resignation (he has accepted a new position elsewhere), will be leaving; so he explained his duties to us, and how to carry them out. They are not accounting tasks, but they are useful skills to have in any job position.

This man, who began working for our company in late 2019, has accepted a new position that will enhance the skills he already has. He is an all-around nice guy, so the rest of us in the office are disappointed to see him go, therefore we're all going to miss him.

This also means I might get more work hours during the week! Starting when? I do not know, but I will soon find out.

Since we (in England) are now allowed to stay away from home overnight Dai and I went up to the Lake District to see how the other house is. It has been empty since the beginning of January.

Dai was working during the day, so I pottered round cleaning and weeding the small bits of garden, changing bed linen and things. In the early evening we went for a couple of walks.

We also managed to finally (fingers crossed) make progress on replacing the kitchen. So far one company quoted only to supply the kitchen, not fit it, one designed and quoted but wouldn’t quite firm up on some of the figures, nor would they give us a date. Another local company measured up but have been too busy to actually draw up any plans, and another wouldn’t come round when we were last booking as “they couldn’t fit us in until March”!

In the U.K. the rules vary depending on which vaccine you have. For Pfizer you have to stay to be observed for 15 minutes, for Oxford-Astra Zeneca you are advised to wait 15 minutes before driving but you don’t have to stay to be observed in the same way. Not sure about Moderna, as that has only just been introduced in this country and not used in the centre where I volunteer yet.

Yep, I'm anticipating that.

In about 10 minutes I'll have to leave the house to go to my appointment...which is at least 10 miles or so from my house (that's the nearest place that could do it). And it's expected to take 20 minutes to get there, given the traffic possibility.

That’s great Jeff. I hope these new tasks go well for you.

I hope so too.

I originally learnt a few of them a year and a half ago, in October of 2019, when the person originally in that position needed to retire due to a serious medical condition. Then two months later, a new person was hired. And as I stated in a previous post, he recently left after 16 months because he accepted a new position elsewhere.

In fact, yesterday before I left the office, I did one of the tasks, even though I had to refer to a sheet of paper with the sequence of steps on it. Often times, that helps me before I get the hang of any task.  But come Monday, I'll have a longer workday so that I can practice these tasks. (However, I'll still have the usual accounting duties I've had for the past 5+ years.)

When I got there, I checked in, confirming who I was, and my appointment time. Then I was directed to wait in a certain place...and then I was asked to come to a certain table to get the injection. After that part was over, a worker escorted me to a waiting area (with socially distanced chairs) where I had to sit for 15 minutes. During that time I was instructed to move my arm around so that it wouldn't get any pain...and after that span of time, I could go! I was inside the vaccination clinic place for no more than 25 minutes altogether.

My mom drove me to and from the appointed place, so that in case I got sore, I wouldn't be uncomfortable driving.

I could have but I didn’t. I had a fever for like 2 nights and a headache one morning. I read that taking fever reducing drugs could dampen the body’s building of the immunity. So let the fever do its job. So I didn’t take my aspirin until the fever was gone. Still need it to help avoid blood clots, vaccine or not.

Right after I got the shot, I came home and took 2 pills, then I woke up the next day and had no reaction whatsoever, except for a sore arm.

We got to go to South Wales to visit Dai’s mum today. Thankfully it was a nice day so we could happily sit outside with her.

We had a lovely roast dinner and a bit of a chat. Though we speak to her a couple of times a week on the phone, we haven’t been able to see her since last July.

We hope that next time we will be able to stay for a couple of days or so.

Well...I am now working full time at my employment.

But this is only on a temporary basis.

The reason this change was made was to ensure that my coworker (who is already fulltime) and I have ample time to perform our respective tasks that we already have plus the new tasks that our Administrative Assistant had. A new person will eventually be hired, but we don't know how long it will be before that happens. And today I took a little time to do one of these new administrative tasks.

Howard you don’t know for definite what is going to happen.

You can still ask for forgiveness and explain why you did what you did. It might help your case, depending on the exact circumstances.

Yeah, what Karen said.

Tell then that you have been with the company for 14 (?) years now. Tell them that you are very sorry and why you did it and that you will never do it again. Also, tell them that you are very embarrassed of your actions. Tell them that your reason for doing it doesn't excuse it but you hope they will give you a second change.

We are rooting for you, Howard.

I assume sometimes and that's why I'm getting anxious in this situation coming up, it's like I'm picturing the meeting in my head so to speak.

That's why My Father is coming along cause I can barely speak for myself and I might tend to get a loss for words, he's like an advocate for me.

Thank You Cat. :)

Busy day at the office for me.

Being full-time now has allotted more time for me to complete tasks, especially since I'm still fairly new at some of them.

Today we had to leave the office a few minutes early because a small brushfire sprouted up a few miles away from the office...and I was worried it might affect my commute home. Thankfully it didn't cost me too much time, and I got home without too much trouble.

Not sure if we'll be going to the office tomorrow; if not, then we might be workin' from home. My boss will message us tomorrow morning before we walk out the door.

Ooooh, fire!  Stay safe.

Checking the map/latest news right now; looks like both of them are still active.

One news update I see online says one of them is contained, meaning it won't spread further...but it's not totally out yet.

Just got back from the meeting with My Father And The Union Rep and I don't think it looks good for me at all, I was nervous in the office and I was trying to plead to the manager, "Please reconsider" while folding my hands but he said "If I could I would" it's not up to me, He told me and My Father that there was footage from an outside company (Loss Prevention) that took the filming of me, they might view it but there's going to be a 2nd meeting coming up (investigation) and I think I'm terminated,Sorry If I did something really stupid, I let Me And My Parents down cause money was coming in and now there won't be any, don't know what to do at this point, I really messed myself up.  :(

I'm sorry I did what I did, sometimes you never know you're being watched but you know, I lasted nearly 15 years with The Union and that should say something as a big accomplishment.  :)

It’s not over yet. Hopefully with all this time and meetings they will keep you, especially with your history with the company. Maybe just give you a fine and restitution. I would tend to think if they wanted you gone and you were easily replaceable they would have fired you right there. I think they’re trying to keep you and I hope it works that way.

But I’ve never worked for a union.

With our company we have forgiven a lot of things, when it comes to longtime employees who could not be easily replaced. Like two who were making off road parts and selling them. And I’m still there with a mistake that cost almost a half million dollars, but every year for 22 years I make them probably at least a couple million. I have to admit I was scared at first. But we have alll made big mistakes at some point. Especially these days, job searching is not the same as it used to be.

Do you mean because of the virus, or just because of the crazy way in general that the hiring process takes place now? Of course all resumes are submitted online now, but most never get seen by human eyes. ATS (applicant tracking system) software does all the work, and it spits out most resumes if it does not see words it likes. Companies pay a lot of money for that software, and, believe me, they use it. Here's an article with helpful hints about how to get past the ATS system.

Beat the Robots: How to Get Your Resume Past the System and Into Human Hands:

Now, fortunately for Howard, with the type of work he has done and may be applying for, there is generally a more straightforward path to employment.

I mean even before the virus. For reasons like you say. And how these days I hear that employers will try and verify your credibility by your social media accounts. I don’t have any, so that would be difficult if I ever had to find another job.

I think you probably summed it up Wagon, I think I can recall the manager say yesterday in the meeting that I was a good worker maybe that's what I thought he said but he also went on about the stealing policy and I understood about that part, I made a blunder and I'm saying that I'm not a kleptomaniac at all, I just need to get those bad thoughts out my head and learn from what I did a few weeks ago.

I hope it turns out well for you Howard. 😊 I agree with the others that the employment process it’s hard now. I’m at my wits end at my place of work. Perhaps if we unionized they would be forced to treat us with an ounce of respect. But even though you made a mistake, the guy did say you’re a good worker. Good luck!

Howard, I think you've been watching too many sitcoms from the 70s & 80s where they use "kleptomania" like they use "amnesia" as a plot device. Nobody thinks you are a so-called "kleptomaniac". Though it does exist, it is a rare disorder. If you had this disorder it would have reared it's ugly head long before now. Unless you're doing this all the time on an impulse you cannot control (in which case you would have been caught long before now), you're not a "kleptomaniac". You just made a mistake that has consequences.

While I'm on my soap box, another term people throw around way too loosely is "nervous breakdown". Technically, there is no such thing as a "nervous breakdown", nor does the American Medical Association recognize any such term. Its more like a very loose, informal umbrella term for what could be any number of conditions. But far too many people run around thinking they are having "nervous breakdowns" when it is no such thing.
