Subject: Trying to figure out techno-rock tune. Help me!

Written By: Bruce2002 (Guest) on 05/07/02 at 11:47 p.m.

I’m hoping someone can help me figure this tune out.

I heard a derivative of a tune (see link) on an add for Lifetime Women's TV. The song is a year or more old (maybe two or three). I have heard the full tune on the radio and music videos before. I even know people who know what I'm talking about when I whistle it.

It has a pop/rock techno beat (as you will hear). It has lyrics like "...what I need... is what you are..." in the chorus, or maybe the tune ends with a lot of that repeating (if you can call that a chorus). It also has words "right now." The other information I can give you is that the singer is male. The sound is similar to traditional "Pet Shop Boys" sort of tunes. The voice is very similar to the lead from "Simple Minds," however, the tune is not more than a few years old, I think. It could be older I suppose.

I have placed the TV commercial clip on my website in a folder at: http://www.bagpipes.com/Visiontek/Lifetime_TV_Promo2.mpg

This TV commercial clip seems to use the essence of the song I'm looking for, and repeats a certain phrasing of the tune, but in the actual song, the "phrase" is always followed by a similar "phrase" in a different (lower) key. It is/was a popular tune. Someone should know what I'm looking for. Remember again that the clip is not the tune, but shares similar characteristics of the tune that make it familiar.

Thank you if you can figure this out, or even try.

I recognize the tune but am having a difficult time finding which group performed it. Do you not have any more clues such as lyrics to help with the search? Good Luck, friend.

I know the tune you're looking for. I've heard it play  :o You are right about the repeating part, and it is always followed by the same sort of thing but lower. And the words are like that too. It is soooo at the tip of my tongue  :P You need more help here. Someone who listens to the link should know it for sure. I think it was more like around 98 or abouts. If I were to characterize the song it would be like Pearl Jam doing a concert with DePeche Mode. This has to be an easy one!!! :-/

I thought I knew the tune but the lyrics would not match up. Have you tried asking any DJ's. I will keep trying. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Thank you everyone for at least looking into this so far. It is very frustrating clinging to the hope that this tune will be figured out. I will be hanging in there. I also had a chance to look up many other popular bands, and I'm coming to the conclusion that this melody you here on the clip is definitely a loose remix of a very popular alternative or rock band song, and it must be obvious to someone out there. I'll keep waiting for more responses.

In that case, the lyrics look a little bit like that song by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians entitled "What I Am". The original lyrics (or, at least, one person's transcription) can be found here: http://www.songmeanings.net/showsong.php?id=74096&mb=

Hey, I found it! "Stupid Girl" by Garbage. Those lyrics were "what you need... is what you got" Thanks for all the help here.
BTW, I have the link to DMB "Where are you going" live on Leno on my website. Very, very good repro. http://www.bagpipes.com/other/DMB-WAYG-Live.mpg
