Coincidentally, the other day I was thinking exactly the same thing - what is the meaning of Alabama? - I'll check out on what people say.

I can't think of anything more than what you assume.

Boy, talk about your stereotypes!  Believe it or not folks, but we don't all behave like the cast of Deliverance, and some of us even *gasp* treat black people and Yankees as equals and with dignity!

cricket

I apologise unreservedly if I have caused you any offence - certainly none was intended.   :-[ :-[

As someone from the other side of the planet, I am simply intrugued by the wordings contained in the lyrics, and have been trying for days now to get someone to answer about it.

I realise the KKK is a sensitive issue but I for one was not trying to infer anything other than :

'did anyone think that's what the song is about'

My point is I don't know.

Whether it is true or not is/was not the issue I intended to raise and if I have caused you aggravation by doing so I am extremely sorry, cricket.

I really didn't mean to do so.

This is to Zella and JC:

I could dish out some stereotypes on people that live in Indiana, and I Could Dish Out even more Insulting Stereotypes for people that live in California. But I won't. why?  because theres good and bad people everywhere.

But people from the South are very protective, of their rights, families and reputations.

You're damned right, J.C. If we don't protect them, who will?

Hey guys...

First of all, this big-mouthed person was not online all afternoon, so I couldn't reply to this till now, because I didn't know about it.

Secondly, the question was about Neil Young and it is obvious from some of Neil Young's songs that he is not fond of the south, which I pointed out.

Thirdly, half of my family lives in Alabama; I also have a good friend there; I have good friends in South Carolina; and when I was young we spent every vacation down south, and I always enjoyed it.

I never made any references to "hillbillies, prejudice" or the like in my post. I mentioned the sign because I have seen it many times, having been to that park frequently, and it always amused me.... as it appeared rather anti-bellum.

Lester, Cricket, Screwball, I am sorry if I offended. I would not hurt any of you for the world. And please don't jump on the other three because of my lack of sensitivity.....  Mea culpa.

Cricket,

Would you like me to remove my original post about the sign? Like I said, the sign always amused me, and after no one replied to the original question after several days I just went and tossed it in. And after re-reading it, I can see how it could be hurtful. Some times I don't think. Lots of times I don't think.... I have been on this board since March, and I am actually surprised that it has taken me this long to piss someone off, since I seem to be pretty good at it in life in general.... :-/

I don't know what happened this afternoon, re: J.C., but I suspect he was coming to my defense, bless him, because he knows I've had a hard couple of weeks....

Anyway, say the word and I will pop my original post off the board.....

Lester, does that mean we can't discuss your neighbor's three-legged chicken anymore....? :'(

People...

My original post was about the meaning of the words behind a song.

Not regarding Alabama itself........ ???

I do not support the the concepts/issues I brought up in the posts I have since deleted.

If everyone wants, the whole thread can be removed because frankly, it was only a question about a song lyric.

A lyric is not fact, as much as it may make it's way into the general conciousness.

Once again I apologise for the brouhaha I have inadvertently started.  I didn't mean to get anyone's toes trod on... :-[

Ah, Skoal or Copenhagen? ;D Seriously, where I used to work in Akron (and that is NE Ohio) snuff was an extremely popular purchase. So I wouldn't really even consider that a "southern thing..."

I have settled everything with Cricket and the others through PMs. I am in agreement with all here that I do not condone the lyrics of Neil Young, but I also will defend our minorities.
I was never a big fan of Young's or Bob Dylan's, and these lyrics were written long before some of us even knew of a civil rights movement. (If I'm not mistaken ;) ) We are not at liberty to interpret the mindset of Neil during his troubled times. We can only speculate. If this thread is not deleted by our moderators, then I hope we can continue without any animosity of ill-will toward each other. We are not the enemy here.
